Summary

Cuánto tiempo toma olvidar a la persona que lo fue todo para ti? Para Alexandra Sawyer, diez años no han sido suficientes. Exitosa y enfocada en su carrera, Alexandra lleva una vida organizada hasta que una mañana de resaca de su secretaria la obliga a hacer algo inusual: ir por su propio café. En medio del aroma a grano tostado y el bullicio de la ciudad, se encuentra con unos ojos que reconoció al instante. Jessy, la chica que una vez fue su mejor amiga —y algo más que nunca se atrevieron a nombrar—, está del otro lado del mostrador. El reencuentro es frío, profesional y cargado de verdades no dichas. Jessy finge que son desconocidas, pero el nombre de Alexandra escrito en el ticket del café revela que el pasado sigue tan vivo como el primer día. ¿Fue el destino o una cruel coincidencia? Alexandra prometió no volver a sufrir por ella, pero ahora que sabe dónde encontrarla, alejarse será la batalla más difícil de su vida.

Chapter 1 - Encuentro

Todo lo que podía pensar era en ella desde ese encuentro después de tantos años. Fue difícil no mostrar mi emoción al verla después de tanto tiempo.

—Buenos días —su voz, solo escucharla hizo que se me acelerara el corazón—. ¿Puede indicarme su orden? Tenemos buenas opciones hoy.

Traté de no sonreír ante ese diálogo tan monótono. Lo que me sorprendió fue que no había alejado la mirada de la caja registradora ni un segundo.

—Un americano, por favor —dije.

Noté cómo se detuvo. No pude evitar emocionarme al ver cómo sus dedos se congelaban sobre la pantalla antes de dirigir, muy lentamente, su mirada hacia mí. Le sonreí, pero ella regresó rápidamente a lo suyo. Una reacción inesperada.

—Y un croissant.

Ella asintió y siguió tecleando. Sonreí para mis adentros; no me había pedido mi nombre para registrar el pedido.

De haber sabido que ella estaba trabajando aquí, habría venido yo por los cafés todo este tiempo y no mi secretaria, quien hoy, por una resaca, me pidió que yo misma me encargara de mi café.

—¿Efectivo o tarjeta? —preguntó, y noté que hacía un esfuerzo por no verme.


Le entregué el efectivo y ella me dio el ticket para retirar mi bebida.


—Por aquel lado —señaló a su derecha, donde están las máquinas—. Puede retirar su pedido. Vuelva pronto. Con eso me despachó. Terminó conmigo.


—Gracias —fue lo único que dije al retirarme a buscar mi café.


¿Realmente era necesario fingir que yo no estaba ahí? Sé que me reconoció. Lo sé, y este papel en mi mano lo demuestra.

Ese es mi nombre, y ella sí me reconoció.

Mientras esperaba, me di cuenta de que había una fila enorme detrás de mí. Observé cómo, de manera educada y paciente, atendía a cada uno de los clientes. Sigue igual de hermosa. No pude evitar recordar cómo éramos hace unos años. Amigas... hasta que de repente dejamos de serlo y pasamos a ser simples conocidas.


—¡Alexandra Sawyer! —llamó una chica.

Vi cómo Jessy levantaba la vista hacia mi dirección, pero no duró mucho; otro cliente capturó su atención de inmediato. Suspiré y recibí lo que sería mi desayuno.


Me retiré del lugar sin mirar atrás, aunque me moría de ganas de hacerlo. Simplemente no puedo pasar por esto de nuevo. Este encuentro ha compensado todos estos años sin verla.
