Chapter 1

Wren.

Today is a lovely day in the Blood Moon pack. I decide to help my mum, Tamara, do her chores in the pack house because she has a busy day today. Usually, my mother’s only chores for the alpha family are to do their laundry and to clean their apartment on the top floor of the pack house. Other true mated omegas jobs are to keep the rest of the pack house in order. However, the Luna is organising the quarterly shifting ceremony that is held for all wolves that have come of age. This is the last test before the alpha decides which omegas he is keeping, and which will be sold. He chooses who is to be sold based on fertility checks and how strong their wolves are, if you have no wolf our alpha will immediately sell you, you can’t protect the pack with no wolf. If your fertility isn’t high, he won’t sell you, instead you will become a warrior, better to die fighting for the pack than be useless, you will have the chance to find a mate. All male omegas will become a warrior, if they do well, he will eventually promote them to a guard, like my dad Craig is. A week after the shifting ceremony is the auction where the chosen omegas, will be sold, those who don’t sell get to stay in the pack. I will be taking part in the shifting ceremony this time I hope to the moon goddess that my tests prove I am unworthy to be sold, I don’t want to become a breeder. My life has barely begun, I am seventeen, and my birthday is tomorrow where I will not be classed as a child anymore but a potential asset and that terrifies me. My parents are also scared but they know they can’t fight this, this is how it has been for decades in the packs that are part of the Pureblood Packs of the High Ridge. It never used to be this way apparently, I have been told stories of how the packs used to be ran generations ago and I can see they used to be a traditional, functional pack. Now we are rigid and aristocratic, selling young female omegas to the highest bidder it’s disgusting. This all started as the alpha, beta and gamma lines wanted to stay pure, so they rejected their goddess given mates and instead married someone of their own kin, keeping their bloodline ‘pure’. After years of this they noticed a pattern, the high ranking females could no longer carry a pregnancy to term and in the rare case they did, the pup was weak, they decided to use omegas as breeders to fix this problem as they are the only ones capable of producing strong alphas, betas, gammas and omega pups without being split in two, our genetics making us flexible and resilient, making us capable of carrying the strong genes. This is the hell we were all born into. This is what I am now facing.

I’ve finished helping mum with the laundry, she thanks me and tells me to get back home to start tea, we know the Luna, Amelia will keep mum all day with planning so mum will not have time and will most likely be exhausted. I give mum a hug and a kiss and go home. Thanks to mum being the alpha family’s personal maid and dad being a guard we don’t live in the omega quarters we live in a cottage at the edge of the woods, its small but big enough for us, my brother Carl is currently training to become a warrior. He has yet to find his mate. I decide to take a nice bath before cooking and cleaning the cottage.

Mum, Dad and Carl all come home at five just as I am serving tea, its meatballs and spaghetti with garlic bread and we all tuck in, I've made enough to feed a family of ten knowing how much we all eat. Dad tells me he has picked up my birthday cake from the bakery for tomorrow, I screech in delight and throw myself into his arms.

“Thanks daddy!”

He laughs “your welcome princess, it’s not every day you turn 18 and get your wolf.”

I gulp and my dad notices, he sighs and says,

“I know what you face in the morning will not be pleasant, I’ve tried to stop it and unfortunately, I’ve been unsuccessful in that, however I will be right outside your door so they don’t go too far, this is the only way I can protect you. I’m so sorry to have failed you.”

My eyes water but I nod

“You haven’t failed me daddy, you will be guarding my door protecting me as always. We knew this would happen. Let’s just hope those tests say I’m unworthy to be sold as a breeder.” I say with more courage than I feel.

He nods “I hope that’s what they say too but no matter what, your wolf will protect you when I can’t”

I nod, return to my seat and carry on eating. Before I know it, I am yawning my head off, I bid goodnight to everyone and head to bed.
