The Night of Ash and Blood

Chapter 1

Lyra

The night smelled wrong.

Lyra paused at the edge of the training field, lifting her head slightly as the wind drifted through the tall pine trees surrounding the Silverfang village. Normally the forest smelled of damp earth, pine, and the familiar scent of her pack.

Tonight there was something else.

Smoke.

Her wolf stirred beneath her skin.

Across the training ground, warriors stood in a wide circle watching her and the man standing opposite her. Torches flickered in the cool night air while the full moon hung heavy above them.

Her opponent was twice her size.

A seasoned warrior.

But Lyra didn’t flinch.

“Ready?” the man asked with a grin.

Lyra simply raised her dagger.

“Always.”

The warrior lunged first.

His sword sliced through the air toward her shoulder, but Lyra moved faster. She ducked under the blade, twisted, and drove her elbow into his ribs.

The crowd gasped.

He staggered, surprised.

Lyra didn’t give him time to recover.

She grabbed his arm, used his own momentum against him, and slammed him into the dirt.

The ground shook as the large warrior hit the ground hard.

Silence fell over the field.

Lyra stood over him, breathing steadily.

“Yield,” she said calmly.

The man groaned before raising a hand.

“I yield.”

A deep laugh echoed across the field.

“That,” said a powerful voice, “is my daughter.”

Lyra turned toward the voice and allowed herself a small smile.

Her father, Alpha Rowan, stepped forward from the watching crowd. Even without shifting into his wolf form, his presence commanded respect.

Tall. Broad shouldered. Powerful.

The leader of the Silverfang pack.

Pride shone in his eyes as he looked at her.

“You fight like a storm,” he said.

Lyra shrugged slightly. “You trained me.”

“True,” Rowan said with a grin.

Then his expression suddenly changed.

The smile faded.

Lyra felt it too.

The wind shifted.

And the smell of smoke became stronger.

Her heart dropped.

“Father…” she whispered.

Rowan lifted his head toward the forest.

Then the first scream shattered the night.

Everyone froze.

Another scream followed.

Then another.

Warriors instantly grabbed weapons.

Rowan’s voice thundered across the field.

“Blackmoon pack!”

The peaceful village exploded into chaos.

Flames suddenly rose above the rooftops at the edge of the village. Wolves began shifting everywhere, their bones cracking as fur replaced skin.

Lyra’s heart pounded.

This wasn’t possible.

The Blackmoon pack had been their allies for generations.

Allies didn’t burn each other’s homes.

“Stay close to me,” Rowan ordered.

But Lyra was already moving.

She ran toward the flames.

The sight that met her made her stomach twist.

Homes were burning.

Warriors fought in the streets.

Bodies already lay scattered across the ground.

The smell of blood filled the air.

“Lyra!” Rowan shouted behind her.

Then the ground trembled.

A massive black wolf crashed into the center of the village square.

Moments later a silver wolf leapt forward to meet it.

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.

Her father.

And the Alpha of Blackmoon.

The two giant wolves circled each other slowly.

The battle around them faded as everyone watched.

Claws scraped against stone.

Low growls rumbled through the air.

Then suddenly—

They attacked.

The clash was brutal.

Teeth snapped. Claws tore through fur and flesh. The two Alphas slammed into each other with terrifying strength.

Lyra’s heart pounded harder with every second.

Her father was strong.

But the black wolf was larger.

Faster.

The fight dragged on for what felt like forever.

Then everything happened too quickly.

The black wolf lunged.

The silver wolf stumbled.

And before anyone could react—

The black wolf’s jaws closed around Rowan’s throat.

The sound of bone snapping echoed across the burning village.

Lyra felt something inside her break.

“NO!”

Her father’s body collapsed onto the stone ground.

The silver wolf was gone.

Only Rowan’s lifeless form remained.

The world went silent.

---

Kael

Kael hated this.

The screams. The flames. The chaos.

This wasn’t war.

This was slaughter.

Kael moved through the burning village with his sword drawn, knocking weapons from warriors’ hands instead of killing whenever he could.

His father had ordered the attack.

But something about it felt wrong.

Then the crowd suddenly parted.

Kael’s heart stopped.

His father stood in the center of the square, blood covering his armor.

At his feet lay the body of Alpha Rowan.

The Silverfang Alpha was dead.

Victory.

But Kael felt no pride.

Only dread.

“Leave no survivors!” Alpha Darius commanded.

Kael clenched his jaw.

Then he felt something strange.

A pull.

A presence.

He slowly turned.

Across the burning village stood a girl.

Silver hair glowed in the firelight. Her golden eyes burned with grief and fury as she stared at the body on the ground.

Kael felt the world tilt.

His wolf suddenly stirred violently inside him.

One word echoed through his mind.

Mate.

Kael’s breath caught.

No.

Not here.

Not now.

Because the girl staring at him was the daughter of the Alpha his father had just killed.

And she looked like she wanted him dead.

Their eyes locked across the flames.

For a moment the battle around them disappeared.

Only the two of them remained.

Connected by something ancient.

Something powerful.

Something neither of them wanted.

Then her gaze shifted to the body of her father.

The connection shattered instantly.

Hatred flooded her eyes.

Lyra stepped forward slowly, her voice cold and steady despite the tears on her face.

“I will destroy your pack.”

Kael didn’t answer.

He simply watched her.

Watched the strength in her posture.

The fury in her eyes.

The power she didn’t even realize she carried.

Then she turned and disappeared into the dark forest.

And somehow Kael knew with terrifying certainty—

This war had only just begun.

And the woman destined to stand beside him one day…

Had just sworn to kill him.
