Chapter 1 – “The Court Where Fate Began "

The sunset painted the basketball court in soft orange and purple hues, long shadows stretching across the asphalt. The soft breeze rustled the nets, and Arata bounced the ball repeatedly, each dribble a beat in a rhythm only he could hear.

Nine shots. Nine misses. Each clank off the rim felt heavier than the last, tugging at memories he’d tried to bury.

Yet, despite the ache in his chest, he kept his usual smile, cracking jokes to himself as if the court could laugh with him.

Maybe the ball’s just shy today" , he muttered, chuckling lightly.

He didn’t want to show her. Yuna. Not the way his past still haunted him, not the way he still carried the sting of humiliation, not the way his heart wavered like a loose net. So he wore his cheerful mask — confident, teasing, untouchable.

But Yuna noticed.

She approached, glasses catching the last rays of sun, hair swaying as she dribbled a ball effortlessly. Her eyes — sharp, perceptive, and subtle — lingered on him. She had always considered him a frenemy, teasing and challenging him in their rivalry. But today… today something was different.

Another miss,” she said softly, a faint smirk tugging at her lips and whispered “Total of nine !!".

“…Nine? Were you counting?” he asked, frustration mixing with admiration.

“I lost track after seven. You’re predictable,” she said, smirking softly, eyes glinting under the sunset light.

Arata caught the ball she tossed back, gripping it tight. She’s calm, skilled… intimidatingly perfect.

I… I can’t stop thinking about her,” he admitted quietly, his voice almost a whisper — not about Yuna, but the ghost of his past heartbreak.

And you think basketball will fix that? "she asked, tilting her head, playful yet perceptive.

It’s the only thing that clears my head… even if I fail,” he said, trying to steady his breath.

Clearly it’s not helping your aim. Maybe your aim reflects your heart,” she teased, a hint of a smile softening her mysterious aura.

Another shot. Miss. Arata groaned, letting frustration leak into his voice.

Yuna dribbled past him lightly, shot again — swish. Effortless, graceful.

Arata’s eyes widened. How can someone make it look so easy?

He focused, inhaled deeply, and took another shot. Swish. Perfect. His chest lifted with a small, victorious breath. One shot, one tiny victory, yet it felt monumental.

You’re improving,” Yuna said softly, her eyes meeting his, warm and knowing.

Thanks… I guess,” he replied, feeling a spark he hadn’t felt in months. The sun dipped lower, painting the court in a quiet, cinematic glow.

For a moment, the world was silent except for their breathing and the faint thud of the basketball. Between missed shots, perfect swishes, and shy smiles, something fragile began to form — a connection neither could yet name.

Yuna glanced at him, her smirk softening. “You know… you don’t have to be perfect. Just keep trying. That’s what counts.”

He looked back, heart lighter than it had been in months. “Yeah… maybe that’s enough.”

As the wind picked up, carrying the scent of autumn leaves and distant chatter of students, the court — once a place of failure and solitude — became a space of quiet hope.

And in that golden hour, under the fading sun, two souls began a rhythm neither expected: the rhythm of missed shots, perfect swishes, and a story just starting to take shape.
