Chapter 1

Elena Hart never imagined she would see Adrian Wolfe again.

Not after the way she left.

Not after the secret she carried with her.

And definitely not in a place like this.

The Grand Aurora Hotel glittered with wealth. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like falling stars, their light reflecting across polished marble floors. The air smelled of expensive perfume and aged champagne, and laughter drifted through the room as the city’s most powerful people celebrated another successful year of business.

Elena moved quietly between them, balancing a tray of champagne glasses in her hands.

She kept her head down.

She had learned long ago how to become invisible in rooms like this.

Five years ago she had been one of them — the daughter of a powerful businessman, attending elite parties with confidence and elegance.

Now she was just part of the staff.

And she preferred it that way.

Invisible was safe.

Invisible meant no one would recognize her.

“Elena, table twelve,” another waitress whispered, nodding toward a group of wealthy guests near the center of the ballroom.

Elena nodded and turned.

Then she froze.

A familiar voice filled the room as someone near the stage began introducing the evening’s most important guest.

“Ladies and gentlemen… please welcome the CEO of Wolfe Holdings, the man behind the biggest corporate acquisition of the year…”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the tray.

No.

Her heart started pounding.

“…Mr. Adrian Wolfe.”

The name crashed into her like a wave she wasn’t prepared for.

Slowly, almost against her will, Elena lifted her eyes toward the front of the room.

And there he was.

Adrian Wolfe.

Standing tall beneath the chandelier lights, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit that made him look even broader and more powerful than she remembered.

The crowd erupted into applause.

But Elena heard none of it.

All she could see was him.

Five years had changed him.

The boy she once loved had become something else entirely.

His jaw was sharper now, his expression colder, and there was a dangerous confidence in the way he stood before the crowd.

He looked like a man who controlled everything around him.

Including the room.

Including the people in it.

Including her heartbeat.

Elena quickly lowered her gaze.

Don’t look at him.

Don’t let him see you.

Her pulse raced as memories she had spent years burying began clawing their way back to the surface.

Late-night conversations.

Soft laughter.

The way he used to hold her hand like she was the most important thing in his world.

Before everything fell apart.

Before the accusations.

Before the betrayal.

Before the night she ran away.

“Elena?”

Her coworker nudged her slightly.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m fine,” Elena whispered quickly.

But she wasn’t.

Not even close.

Because something deep inside her was screaming a warning.

Leave.

Now.

Before he sees you.

She turned quickly, planning to disappear into the service hallway before the speech ended.

But fate had other plans.

Because at that exact moment, Adrian Wolfe’s speech ended.

The applause thundered through the room again.

And as the crowd parted to allow him through…

His eyes lifted.

And locked directly onto hers.

Everything stopped.

The noise.

The movement.

Even Elena’s breath.

For a moment neither of them moved.

Adrian’s expression didn’t change, but something dark flickered in his eyes.

Recognition.

Slow.

Dangerous recognition.

Elena’s stomach dropped.

He knows.

Her first instinct was to run.

But her feet refused to move.

Adrian said something briefly to the people around him before stepping away from the crowd.

And then he started walking toward her.

One step.

Then another.

Each movement calm and deliberate.

Like a predator who had just spotted something he had been hunting for a very long time.

Elena’s heart slammed violently against her ribs.

Please don’t come here.

Please don’t—

He stopped directly in front of her.

Close enough that she could see the faint scar on his eyebrow she used to tease him about years ago.

Close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body.

Adrian studied her face in silence.

His eyes slowly traced her features as if memorizing them.

Then his voice came.

Low.

Controlled.

Dangerously calm.

“Elena.”

Her breath caught.

Five years.

Five years since she had heard him say her name.

She forced herself to speak.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy with everything they never said.

His gaze hardened slightly.

“You disappeared.”

The words were simple.

But the accusation behind them was unmistakable.

Elena swallowed.

“So did you.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not the same thing.”

For a moment neither of them spoke again.

Then Adrian leaned slightly closer.

His voice dropped to a whisper only she could hear.

“You owe me an explanation.”

Elena’s heart pounded violently.

“You’re not entitled to one.”

Something dangerous flashed in his eyes.

Then his gaze shifted slightly.

Past her.

Toward the small hallway behind her.

Where a little boy stood waiting quietly beside the kitchen door.

The child had wandered out looking for his mother.

Elena felt her blood turn cold.

Because Adrian’s eyes narrowed as he studied the boy

Then slowly…

Very slowly…

His gaze returned to her.

“Elena,” he said quietly.

“Why does that child look exactly like me?”
