Chapter 1

It was a winter afternoon. Even though the sun, hidden behind gray clouds, was glowing faintly, his pale rays did not warm the surrounding land covered in snow and ice. The wind blew cold, and his howl echoed through that desolate and boring hallway. There weren’t any drawings, posters, or colors on the walls. It all seemed so lifeless, which was strange, considering that it was the hallway of a primary school.

In that little village, abandoned and isolated from the rest of the world, in the middle of a vast expanse of trees and mountains, people only believed in God, they didn’t care about anything else. At least, this was what Noah thought, sitting on a bench in that empty and dark hallway, waiting for his parents to finish talking with the headmaster of the school and some of his teachers.

He could hear them through the half-open door of the office, because they really thought that he, a young and unaware eleven-year old boy, couldn’t understand. But he could. He understood everything.

“This is unacceptable, do you understand, Mister and Mrs. Mueller?” was saying Miss Williams, his math's teacher.

“Your son should be a normal child, enjoying his life and playing with his classmates, not doing things like this in the middle of the lessons!” continued the headmaster.

“Why can’t he be like his sister Victoria? She is a top student and everybody is her friend! I’ve never seen such a perfect student in my life, always so nice and polite. I really don’t understand what is wrong with him,” intervened another teacher.

Noah took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. This wasn’t the first time he had heard them comparing him with his younger sister, and neither was it the first time for his parents.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mueller, you should give him a punishment, or he won’t stop trying to get attention by doing things so disgraceful, such as cutting himself while my colleagues are teaching. He shouldn’t be searching for attention, he is just a child who wants to be seen, and I repeat, this is unacceptable! I really hope this will be the last time i'm going to talk with you about it”, said the headmaster with a serious and stern tone.

“I’m really sorry for my son’s behavior. I thought that after the last time we were called here he had stopped… but he didn’t,” his father concluded with a sad sigh.

Noah knew perfectly well that his father wasn’t really sad. He was furious, and so was his mother. At home he was probably going to be scolded, and maybe even hit.

Even though Noah had heard those words over and over again, he could still feel a mix of anger boiling in his veins and the weight of what had been said spreading through his body, leaving him humiliated. He was tired of hearing people think he was doing it for something as stupid as attention.

Nobody understood him. He was alone. He didn’t have friends or anyone who cared about him. His teachers pushed everybody away from him by saying awful things and making them believe that he was broken.

That wasn’t fair. He didn’t want to be like Victoria, she was fake.

So now, after all of that, he just wanted to be left alone. Why couldn’t they just let him do whatever he wanted? He wasn’t doing anything wrong.

He took a deep breath, while clutching his arm, covered with fresh scars, causing himself a sharp painand when he heard Miss Williams calling his name.

Noah stood up and slowly entered the office, sitting down next to his mother, she wasn’t even looking at him, and so wasn’t his father.

“Noah… I’m sure you understand that your behavior must be fixed,” the headmaster said.

He paused for a moment to clean his old glasses. His eyes were hollow with age, and the wrinkles on his forehead left deep marks every time he furrowed his thick white eyebrows, just like his few remaining hairs. Then he stroked his bearded chin and continued:

“If you don’t stop doing this to yourself… you’ll be in big trouble, do you understand? I don’t want to see you and your parents here anymore for this reason. That’s all. Goodbye.”

Having said that, he started looking back at his documents.

Miss Williams looked at Noah in the eyes, she was tired and angry and only after a sharp sigh, she looked away from him.

His parents stood up, and his father grabbed Noah and pulled him to his feet, so they said goodbye to them and left his office and the school.
