The girl in the background
Zara walked through the bustling streets of umario, unnoticed among the sea of people. Cars honked, street vendors shouted, and students hurried toward school, but she moved as if she didn’t exist. Some people learned to stand out; she had learned to disappear.
By the school gate, groups of students laughed and chatted, paying no attention to her. Inside the classroom, she quietly took her seat while the teacher wrote on the board.
“Who can solve this?” the teacher asked.
A few students glanced at her. One whispered, “Who even is she?”
Zara didn’t respond. She wasn’t here to be noticed. She was just… there.
After school, she walked home alone. The chatter and laughter of others faded behind her. At her apartment, she entered her room, dim light casting shadows across the walls. Her drawer, slightly ajar, revealed files and photographs peeking out.
Something caught her eye. She reached inside and picked up one photo.
“Another one…?” she whispered. Her lips pressed into a thin line. The work never ended.
As she stared at the image, the drawer slowly closed on its own with a soft creeeak. “…Time to move,” she muttered, slipping the photo into her bag.
By night, the calm girl of the day was gone. Zara stood in the shadows of a quiet umario street, watching a man move nervously under the dim streetlights. Her eyes were sharp, focused, ready.
Another target. Another night. And she would see everything no one else could.
