Where paths begin

The night smelled like rain and fate.

Elara drew in a slow breath, letting the cool air fill her lungs, but it did little to calm the restless energy coiling inside her chest. The forest around the clearing hummed softly with life—the rustling of leaves, the distant cry of nocturnal creatures, the quiet shifting of wolves gathering beneath the ancient oaks.

Everything felt… heightened.

As if the world itself knew something was about to change.

Her fingers curled into the thin fabric of her dress, gripping it just tightly enough to ground herself. She had chosen the simplest one she owned—soft grey, unadorned, almost blending into the shadows. It felt safer that way. Less noticeable.

Elara had spent most of her life trying not to be noticed.

Tonight made that impossible.

The clearing was already filling, wolves forming small clusters as they spoke in hushed tones. Some laughed nervously, others stood stiff with anticipation. The younger ones whispered excitedly, their eyes bright with hope and curiosity.

Tonight was the Claiming.

The night the moon revealed fated mates.

Elara’s gaze drifted over the gathering crowd, her chest tightening slightly as she watched the other unmated wolves. There were girls her age glowing with excitement, their hair carefully braided or left loose to cascade over their shoulders. Their dresses were brighter, softer, chosen with care.

They expected something good to happen tonight.

Elara… didn’t.

Hope had never been something she could afford.

Growing up in the Nightfall pack had taught her that quickly enough. Not through cruelty—not outright—but through something quieter. More insidious.

Neglect.

Being overlooked.

Forgotten in plain sight.

Her parents had died when she was young—an illness that swept through part of the pack during a harsh winter. She remembered very little about them beyond warmth and laughter, faint echoes that felt more like dreams now than memories.

After that, she had simply… existed.

Fed. Housed. Tolerated.

But never truly seen.

Never truly valued.

She had learned to stay quiet. To stay out of the way. To survive without expecting anything more.

It was easier that way.

Less painful.

And yet…

Tonight, something felt different.

Her hand drifted to her chest, pressing lightly against her sternum. The strange sensation had started earlier that evening—barely noticeable at first. A faint flutter, like wings brushing against her ribs.

Now it was impossible to ignore.

It pulsed with a steady rhythm, growing stronger with every passing moment.

Her wolf stirred beneath her skin, pacing, restless.

Do you feel it? Elara whispered inwardly.

Her wolf responded with a low, eager hum.

Yes… something is coming.

Elara swallowed.

The moon had risen fully now, hanging heavy and luminous above the clearing. Its silver light poured over everything, bathing the forest in an ethereal glow. Shadows stretched long and thin, shifting with the movement of wolves below.

The elders began to move toward the center, their presence commanding attention.

Conversations quieted.

The air thickened with anticipation.

“Elara.”

She startled slightly at the sound of her name, turning to find a familiar face approaching.

Liora.

One of the few wolves who had ever shown her consistent kindness.

Liora’s auburn hair was braided loosely over one shoulder, her green eyes warm despite the nervous tension flickering behind them.

“You came,” Liora said softly, offering a small smile.

Elara nodded. “I almost didn’t.”

“I know,” Liora replied, her expression understanding. “But you would have regretted it.”

Elara wasn’t so sure about that.

“What if nothing happens?” she asked quietly.

Liora tilted her head. “And what if something does?”

Elara let out a faint, humorless breath. “Something usually means trouble for me.”

Liora’s smile faded slightly, replaced by something more serious.

“Not everything in your life has to end badly, Elara.”

Elara didn’t respond.

She wanted to believe that.

She really did.

But experience had taught her otherwise.

A sudden hush fell over the clearing.

It spread quickly—like a ripple moving through still water—until every voice had fallen silent.

Even the forest seemed to quiet.

Elara felt it before she saw him.

A shift in the air.

A pressure.

Power.

The crowd parted instinctively as he stepped into the clearing.

Alpha Draven.

He didn’t need to announce himself.

His presence did that for him.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and undeniably dominant, he moved with controlled precision, every step deliberate. His dark hair was slightly tousled; his sharp features set in a neutral expression that somehow still carried authority.

But it was his eyes that commanded attention.

Cold.

Calculating.

Unforgiving.

Every wolf lowered their gaze as he passed.

Every wolf… except Elara.

She couldn’t.

Because the moment her eyes met his—

Everything changed.

The sensation in her chest exploded.

Her breath caught violently as something deep inside her snapped into place with terrifying clarity.

The bond.

It surged through her like wildfire, blazing through her veins, igniting every nerve ending in her body. Her wolf surged forward with a cry of pure, unfiltered joy.

Mate.

The word echoed through her entire being.

Elara staggered slightly, her hand flying to her chest as her heart raced uncontrollably.

“It’s him…” she whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief. “It’s really him…”

The Alpha.

Of all wolves…

Her mate.

A fragile warmth spread through her, chasing away years of quiet loneliness. For a brief, impossible moment, something inside her dared to hope.

Maybe… she wasn’t forgotten after all.

Draven stilled mid-step.

His gaze locked onto hers.

And she saw it.

Recognition.

A flicker of something real.

He felt it too.

Relief rushed through her.

She took a step forward, drawn to him without hesitation, without thought.

This was right.

This was destiny.

This was—

“No.”

The word hit like a blade.

Elara froze.

The warmth inside her faltered.

Draven’s expression hardened, his gaze turning cold—colder than she had ever seen.

“I refuse this,” he said, his voice cutting through the silence. “This is not happening.”

Confusion crashed into her, sharp and disorienting.

“What…?” Her voice barely held together. “Alpha… the bond—”

“I said no.”

The finality in his tone sent a chill through the clearing.

Murmurs began to spread.

Elara’s chest tightened painfully.

“You feel it,” she insisted, desperation creeping into her voice. “You know I’m your mate.”

Draven stepped closer now, his presence overwhelming—but not comforting.

Judging.

Evaluating.

Dismissing.

“I felt something,” he said. “That does not mean I will accept it.”

Her heart cracked.

“With my position,” he continued, his voice low and sharp, “I require strength. Power. A Luna who commands respect.”

His gaze swept over her, slow and deliberate.

“You are none of those things.”

The words landed with brutal precision.

Elara flinched as if struck.

“I am not weak,” she said, though her voice betrayed her.

A soft laugh broke through the tension.

Vespera stepped forward.

Confident. Elegant. Dangerous.

She moved to Draven’s side with effortless grace, her hand brushing against his arm as if claiming her place.

“This is rather unfortunate,” Vespera said, her lips curving into a smirk. “I had hoped the moon would show better judgment.”

Her eyes raked over Elara.

Cold. Dismissive.

Cruel.

“This?” she added. “This is what fate offers you?”

A few wolves chuckled.

Elara’s stomach twisted painfully.

Draven didn’t correct her.

Didn’t defend the bond.

Instead—

He took Vespera’s hand.

And something inside Elara shattered completely.

“I, Alpha Draven, reject you, Elara of the Nightfall pack,” he declared. “I sever this bond and refuse you as my mate and Luna.”

Pain tore through her.

Violent. Consuming.

Elara collapsed to her knees with a strangled cry, her fingers digging into the dirt as the bond strained, stretched—

But didn’t break.

Her eyes widened in shock.

It was still there.

Faint.

Damaged.

But alive.

Draven faltered slightly.

Confusion flickered across his face.

But it was gone in an instant.

“Pathetic,” Vespera muttered.

Then—

Crack.

The slap echoed through the clearing.

Elara’s head snapped to the side, blood filling her mouth.

“Know your place,” Vespera said coldly.

Elara blinked, dazed.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

No one helped.

Because the Alpha had made his choice.

And his word was law.

Draven turned away.

“Remove her,” he ordered.

Hands grabbed her roughly, dragging her upright.

“Please…” she whispered.

But no one listened.

As she was pulled from the clearing, her body trembling, her soul fractured—

The moon still shone above.

Silent.

Unmoved.

But deep within her—

Something shifted.

Something dark.

Something waiting.

Because the bond had not fully broken.

And whatever came next—

Would not be gentle.
