Summary

I know what she is before I see her. Her scent crowds into my lungs and sticks like honey. When I inhale it, I almost stumble into the dirt, paws tripping over each other. My pulse changes its rhythm and all the synapses in my brain flicker to the cadence of a single word over and over. Mine.

My wards are failing. The wind carries the warnings to me through my window as I sit at my small table, shuffling my tarot cards.

Seven years ago, my coven wove these wards around my cabin, a shield that hid me from view and gently nudged anyone who came near toward a different direction. It was a symbol of my sisters’ care, and the last memory I have of speaking to another soul.

I should call one of them before the wards fall completely. I have Abigail’s number in my phone. They would come for me, I know.

I gaze out the window at the neglected garden, at the wild grip of vines on my fence. The breeze dances in and asks me a question, tugging at the loose strands of my hair.

Anxiety tightens around my chest at the thought of another person stepping across the threshold, of voices cutting through the soft quiet that I’ve so deeply burrowed in.

I set my cards down and stand. The wind, hopeful, begins to dance along my collarbone.

I shut the window with a gentle click.

I’ll call my sisters later.
