Chapter 1
The climb back up from the deep dark was a silent, grueling procession. The heat of the lava pools stayed with them for a long time, a stifling weight on their backs until the air finally turned cool and damp again. Elinor walked in the middle, her hand resting habitually on the red collar tucked into her belt. The space beside her felt empty, the lack of a happy, rhythmic panting making the stone tunnels feel twice as long. When they finally broke through the trapdoor into their stone fortress, the morning sun was just beginning to hit the battlements. It should have been a moment of relief, but the atmosphere inside the base felt heavy, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.Vare didn't even make it to his bed. He collapsed onto a wooden bench near the crafting table, his head falling back against the stone wall. Within seconds, his breathing became heavy and erratic."Vare? You okay?" Dohx asked, reaching out to shake his shoulder.Vare’s eyes snapped open, but they weren't Vare’s eyes. The warm brown was gone, replaced by a swirling, misty white that looked like static on an old television screen. He sat bolt upright, his movements stiff and mechanical, like a puppet being jerked by invisible strings."Vare, you’re creeping me out, man," Dohx said, stepping back. When Vare spoke, it wasn't his voice. It was a deep, resonating boom that sounded like a thousand stones grinding together in a cathedral. It was ancient, cold, and echoed off the walls even though he wasn't shouting."The shadows of the deep have seen the spark," the voice rumbled through Vare’s lips. "The King of the Wastes has felt the vibration of the iron. An army is to come. The sky will turn to ash, and the earth will bleed gold. FORTIFY! Prepare the skin of the world, for the siege begins when the moon turns red!"With a violent gasp, Vare slumped forward, his forehead hitting the oak table with a dull thud."Vare!" Elinor rushed over, pulling his head back.Vare blinked, his eyes returning to normal. He looked around the room, dazed and shivering. "What... what happened? Why are you guys looking at me like I just turned into a creeper?""You just spoke in a voice that sounded like it was three thousand years old," Dohx said, his voice trembling. "You said an army is coming. You told us to fortify."Vare rubbed his throat, wincing. "I don't remember anything. I just... I saw a forest made of dark wood and a house that looked like a mountain. And I felt this pressure, like something was trying to push through me."Dohx pulled the 'Strange Book' from his belt. The pages were fluttering on their own, stopping on a sketch they hadn't seen before—a massive, three-story mansion hidden in a dark oak forest. Below it, a new word was written in shimmering ink: STERNSTONE."The book is updating," Dohx whispered. "If an army is coming, stone won't be enough. We need something stronger. And I think I know where to find it."He pointed to the mountains in the distance. Beyond them lay the Roofed Forest, a place where the trees grew so thick that the sun never touched the ground."We have to go to the Woodland Mansion," Dohx said. "If Vare’s vision was right, the materials we need are there."They set out at noon. The hike took them through the jagged mountain passes and down into a forest that felt like a different world. The trees were massive, their dark oak trunks wide enough to hide a horse, and their leaves formed a solid canopy that turned the day into a permanent, sickly twilight."Stay sharp," Dohx warned, his iron sword drawn. "This is where the Illagers live. They aren't like the 'hmm' guys in the village."They saw the mansion before they reached it. It was a gargantuan structure of dark wood and cobblestone, looming out of the mist like a haunted castle. It had hundreds of windows, each one looking like a dark, watching eye.The front doors were massive, hanging open on rusted hinges. They stepped inside, and the silence of the forest was replaced by the hollow, echoing sound of their own footsteps. The hallways were grand, lined with red carpets and massive wool statues of sinister-looking faces."Upstairs," Dohx whispered. "The book said the chests in the storage rooms."They navigated the labyrinthine corridors, ducking into rooms filled with giant blocky mushrooms and strange jail cells. Finally, they found a room labeled with a sign written in a jagged, unknown script. Inside were rows of heavy, reinforced chests.Vare pried the first one open. Instead of gold or iron, the chest was filled with bricks that looked like a mix between deepslate and obsidian. They were a matte, midnight blue, with faint white veins running through them."Sternstone," Dohx said, picking one up. It was incredibly heavy, nearly pulling his arm out of its socket. "It feels... dense. Like the stone is compressed."They moved from chest to chest, working in a feverish hurry. They counted the stacks. Six hundred blocks. It was enough to wrap their entire base in a secondary skin of impenetrable armor."We got it," Elinor said, her voice echoing in the large room. "Let's get out of here. I don't like the way the shadows are moving."They turned to leave, but as they reached the grand staircase of the main hall, a loud, whistling horn echoed through the mansion.BWAAAA-RUMPH!"Intruders!" a voice hissed from the balcony above.Four massive figures stepped out of the darkness. They looked like villagers, but their skin was a deathly grey, and they wore dark, regal robes. In their hands, they gripped massive iron axes that looked sharp enough to split an atom."Vindicators!" Dohx yelled. "Form a circle!"The Vindicators didn't "hmm." They screamed. They charged down the stairs with terrifying speed, their axes raised high. The first one reached Vare, swinging downward with enough force to shatter the floorboards. Vare rolled to the side, his baseball instincts saving his life as the axe buried itself in the wood."Eat iron!" Vare roared, lunging forward and burying his sword in the Illager’s chest. The Vindicator didn't vanish instantly; it fought back, its grey face twisted in a snarl before finally dissolving into particles.Elinor was dodging the second one, her gold boots clicking on the floor. She used her iron shovel not to dig, but to parry, the heavy metal clashing against the axe. "Dohx! There’s more coming from the hallways!"Dohx was locked in a duel with the lead Vindicator. This one was wearing an enchanted leather tunic that glowed with a faint blue light. Every time their swords clashed, sparks flew that burned Dohx’s arms."We have to move to the exit!" Dohx shouted, parrying a blow that nearly snapped his wrist. "Don't let them surround you!"They fought their way toward the front doors, a chaotic dance of steel and grey skin. Vare took a glancing blow to the shoulder, his leather armor tearing like paper, but he didn't stop. He swung his sword in a wide arc, forcing the Vindicators back just long enough for them to reach the threshold."RUN!" Dohx screamed. They burst out of the mansion and into the dark forest. They didn't look back. They ran until their lungs burned and the sound of the Illager horns faded into the distance.By the time they reached their stone fortress, the square moon was already high. But they didn't go to sleep. The memory of Vare’s ancient voice was too fresh."Start placing the Sternstone," Dohx commanded, his voice raspy. They worked through the night, fueled by pure adrenaline. They laid the Sternstone blocks over their cobblestone walls, creating a double-thick barrier. The midnight-blue stone felt cold and immovable. It was the "Skin of the World" the voice had talked about—something in between the fragility of stone and the god-like strength of obsidian. As the sun began to rise on the horizon, their base was transformed. It was no longer a grey tower; it was a dark, shimmering fortress of Sternstone, standing like a defiant tooth on the beach.Dohx stood on the roof, looking out at the forest where the army was supposed to come from. He felt the weight of his iron sword and the protection of the new walls."The fortress is ready," Dohx whispered."Good," Vare said, leaning against the battlement, his shoulder bandaged with a scrap of wool. "Because I have a feeling that army isn't going to care about how hard we worked."Elinor looked at Luna’s collar, then at the horizon. "Let them come. We aren't the same kids who fell onto that beach."The "Lesson of the Original" was about to become a war. And for the first time, they were truly fortified.
