Summary

Joaquin “Dommi” Reyes built a life the world admired—war hero, bestselling author, and public figure. But behind the success is a man who has lived eighteen years in silence, carrying the weight of a love he never truly let go. When he returns to his hometown for a book signing, a chance encounter with a teenage girl changes everything. Mia Whitaker is sharp, kind, and strangely familiar—and the more Joaquin learns about her, the more the past he buried begins to surface. Because Mia isn’t just a fan. She’s his daughter. Reuniting with Claire Whitaker, the woman he once loved and lost, Joaquin finally uncovers the truth behind the life he never knew existed—and the painful reason she disappeared all those years ago. But just as they begin to rebuild what was broken, time proves to be their greatest enemy. With love, regret, and second chances colliding, Echoes of Us is a deeply emotional story about the moments we lose, the ones we’re given back, and the echoes that remain long after goodbye.

Chapter 1 — The Return

There are two kinds of love in this world—the ones that leave, and the ones that echo. I didn’t know which one ours was back then. I do now.

Wrightstown, New Jersey never changed. That was the first thing I noticed. The same narrow streets lined with aging trees. The same quiet hum of life moving just slow enough to feel like time had forgotten it. Even the air felt familiar—cooler than it should’ve been for late spring, carrying the faint scent of damp earth and memory. It was strange what you remembered. Stranger still what you didn’t.

I stepped out of the black SUV before the driver could come around to open the door. Old habits. Some things don’t leave you, no matter how far you go. The gravel beneath my boots crunched the same way it always had—sharp, honest, real. That was something I hadn’t felt in a long time.

“Mr. Reyes,” my assistant called gently from behind me. “We’ve got about twenty minutes before the crew needs you on set.”

I didn’t answer right away. My eyes had already drifted across the street, pulled toward something I hadn’t realized I’d been searching for. The high school. Northern Burlington County Regional High School still stood exactly where it always had, like it had been waiting as we passed by it. The paint was more worn now, the bleachers quieter, but it was the same field. The same place where everything had started. And where it had ended.

“Joaquin?” she pressed softly.

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding and finally turned. “Yeah,” I said. “I’ll be there.”

To the world, I was someone. A decorated Marine. A best-selling author. The man behind The Silence Trials—a story about control, sacrifice, and the cost of losing what makes us human. Funny how you can write entire worlds and still not understand your own. They called me Dommi now. It was easier that way. Cleaner. A name that didn’t belong to the boy who once stood on that field with dirt on his hands and dreams too big for a town like this. A name that didn’t remember late nights, cheap laughter, or promises whispered under dim stadium lights. A name that didn’t remember her. Or at least… that’s what I told myself.

I started walking. No cameras. No crew. Just me. The sidewalk hadn’t changed either, cracked in the same places, uneven enough to trip you if you weren’t paying attention. I remembered running down this exact stretch once—late, out of breath, laughing like the world couldn’t touch me. I could almost hear it. Her voice. Soft, teasing, always just a step ahead of me.

I stopped.

Just for a second.

Because memory has a way of catching up when you slow down long enough to let it.

I told myself I came back for work, that this was just another project, another adaptation, another step in a life that had already moved on. But standing there, looking at that school, I knew that wasn’t the truth. You don’t come back to a place like this unless something in you never really left.

A breeze rolled through the street, stirring the leaves just enough to make them whisper. I closed my eyes for a moment, letting the sound settle into something deeper than memory. Regret. Not loud. Not sharp. Just there. Lingering, like it always had been.

“Dommi!”

The voice snapped me back. A few people had gathered near the barricades further down the block—fans, mostly. Phones already out. Smiles ready. They waved when they saw me, calling out a name that had followed me across continents but somehow felt foreign here. I gave them a small nod, a practiced smile—the kind that doesn’t quite reach your eyes.

Because the truth is, no matter how far you go, how much you build, how many people know your name, there are parts of you that stay exactly where you left them. And sometimes, if you’re not careful, they’re still waiting when you come back.

I took one last look at the school before turning away. Just one. Because something about it felt unfinished, like a story that had stopped mid-sentence. And for the first time in a long time, I had the strange, quiet feeling that I wasn’t here to start something new.

I was here to finish something old.
