Waiting for Godzilla (But Enjoying the Wait)
"I really wanted to love this one. Godzilla holding an Easter egg is such a perfect, weird cover, it sets up exactly the kind of unhinged energy I was hoping to find inside, and I'll admit a big part of why I picked this up was hoping for some kind of kaiju chaos alongside the romance. No scales or eggs yet in what's posted so far, but this is still an ongoing story, so I'm holding out genuine hope timothyscifi is just saving that reveal for later. (If Godzilla does show up in this universe, with these characters, I am fully here for it. Please. Let him crash through campus mid-chapter. I will read every word.) In the meantime, there are genuinely comic moments that land, Stacey's "historically a unisex name" line got an actual laugh out of me, and some real dramatic swings too, the traffic stop turn especially caught me off guard in a good way. What I found myself wanting more than anything was beats. Moments that escalate, peak, and let themselves land before moving on to the next thing. Right now a lot of these scenes run together at the same volume and the same tempo, so even strong character details (Stacey being a man, for instance, which is set up once early and easy to miss) can slide right past before they get a chance to matter. A little more pacing variation, more contrast between the comic scenes and the dramatic ones, more distinct voice from character to character, would go a long way toward making these good moments hit as hard as they deserve to. That said, timothyscifi is doing a good job here with the story and the storytelling, and since it's ongoing, there's plenty of room for it to keep growing into everything that cover promises. There's a real sense of humor and some genuine heart underneath the chaos already. Just bring on the kaiju whenever you're ready. kira"
