The Vineyard of Screams

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

After hearing a woman’s blood-curdling screams coming from a ruined hut deep within the "Choke" forest, Leo and his four friends flee back to the village to seek answers from an old man named Silas. He reveals a horrific backstory: years ago, a drunken husband, blinded by a delusional greed for a "hidden treasure," tied his wife to a tree and burned her alive before butchering his young son with an axe and throwing him into a stone well. The forest became cursed, growing a vineyard of bruised purple grapes that are protected by the family's vengeful spirits. Driven by curiosity and a bit of ego, the boys return to the hut, where their friend Jax scoffs at the legend and eats a single grape. The curse is triggered instantly: invisible forces seize him, twisting his body and ripping him in half at the waist before the vines drag his remains into the earth. To save the rest of the group from the closing walls of thorns, Leo bravely descends into the foul well to recover the pouch the son had been clutching. He discovers that the "gold" the father killed for was actually just a collection of worthless brass buttons. By confronting the husband’s shadow with the truth of his mistake, Leo breaks the cycle of hatred, allowing the spirits to reunite and find peace while the cursed vineyard withers into dust.

Chapter I : The Lanterns in the Mist

The sun had barely dipped below the horizon when Leo and his four friends gathered at the edge of the “Choke.” They had spent the afternoon listening to two local hunters at the village square, who swore the forest moved and that a woman’s voice could be heard pleading for her life. To prove they weren’t cowards, the boys had each brought a heavy iron lantern, the flames flickering behind glass panes.

“We go in, we find the old hut, we prove it’s just the wind, and we come back,” Leo commanded, though his grip on his lantern was tight. As they stepped into the dense treeline, the forest seemed to swallow the light of their five lanterns. The further they went, the heavier the air became, smelling of damp earth and something sweet—like rotting fruit. Suddenly, a sound tore through the silence. It was a woman’s voice, sharp and agonizing. “Help me! Please, he’s coming!” The scream was so real it felt like a physical blow. Terrified, the boys didn’t wait a second longer. They turned and sprinted back toward the village, their lanterns swinging wildly in the dark, until they reached the safety of the main road, gasping for air.
