THE BEGINNING

Serena Vale never had to raise her voice.

She didn’t need to.

A single look—cool, measured, perfect, almost unreal, was enough to shift the air around her. Conversations lowered. Laughter stopped. People moved, instinctively, creating space where she walked.

It wasn’t admiration.

It was FEAR

People knew who Serena was.

And more importantly, they knew what she could do.

The hallway buzzed like it always did between classes—lockers slamming, voices overlapping, shoes squeaking against polished floors—but the moment Serena stepped through the front doors, it changed.like her presence had an impact which in a sense it did

Her heels clicked against the floor in steady rhythm, her body moved like she was in a runaway,She didn’t rush. She never rushed. Time, like everything else here, adjusted itself around her.

Behind her, her friends followed, their laughter were like background music. They matched her pace without thinking about it, orbiting her without needing instruction.because thats how they were taught and tried to change it cause they knew if they did,it would have consequences that they are not ready for.

“Did you hear about Chloe?” Vanessa said, leaning in slightly, her voice pitched just low enough that it almost didn't sound

Serena didn’t look at her. She was adjusting the sleeve of her blazer, smoothing out a wrinkle that didn’t exist.

“No,” she said. “What about her?”

“She didn’t come back today.”

That made Serena glance up.

“Transferred,” Vanessa added, a smile tugging at her lips. “Her parents pulled her out.”

A pause.

Then Serena smiled.

It wasn’t wide. It wasn’t warm. It was the kind of smile that barely existed, gone almost as soon as it appeared.

“Smart,” she said simply.

Vanessa laughed.

The others joined in, softer but just as sharp.

Serena didn’t.

Her attention had already shifted.

Down the hallway, near the lockers, stood someone who didn’t quite fit the rhythm of everything else.

Zack Rivera.

He always stood like that—slightly apart, like he’d stepped into the wrong place and hadn’t figured out how to leave. His shoulders were relaxed, but not comfortable. His eyes moved, taking things in, but never holding anything for too long.

He looked like he was trying to be invisible.

And in a place like this, that only made him stand out more.

Serena watched him for a second longer than necessary.

Then she kept walking.

---

The hallway narrowed slightly near the stairwell, forcing people closer together. Serena didn’t adjust her path.

She never did.

And like always, people moved.

Except—

Zack didn’t.

Not immediately.

He stepped forward at the wrong moment, turning just as Serena reached him.

They collided.

Not hard. Just enough for Serena to stumble

Zack froze.

For a second, he didn’t move at all, like his body hadn’t caught up to what had just happened.

Then he stepped back quickly.

“Sorry,” he said.

His voice was quiet. Not weak—just careful, like he was afraid that Serena would snap at any second which wasn't far from the truth.

Serena looked at him.

Really looked this time.

Up close, he looked out of place like he didn't want to be here but who could blame him. Then her glance moved his eyes, she saw that his eyes were observant like he was trying to figure her out and Something she couldn’t immediately define.

It annoyed her.

“Move,” she said.

No anger. No emphasis.

Just a command.

Zack blinked, like he’d expected something else.

Then he stepped aside.

Of course he did.

Serena walked past him without another word.

But her friends didn’t.

They lingered just long enough.

“Watch where you’re going,” one of them muttered.

“Or maybe just don’t go anywhere,” another added, a laugh slipping through.

Zack didn’t respond.

He just stood there, hands loosely at his sides, eyes lowered again.

Like none of it mattered.

Like he was used to it.

Serena kept walking.

But something about that—about the lack of reaction—stuck with her and she didn't like it.

---

By the time she reached her locker, the moment should’ve been over.

Forgotten.

Replaced by something more interesting.

But it wasn’t.

She pulled the door open, and stared at the contents without really seeing them.

“Earth to Serena?” Vanessa waved a hand in front of her face. “You spaced out.”

“I didn’t,” Serena replied, grabbing her books.

“You did,” another girl said. “What were you thinking about?”

Serena shut the locker with a soft click.

“Nothing important.”

That was the truth.

Or at least, it should’ve been.

---

History class passed slowly.

Serena sat near the window, sunlight brushing across her desk, her pen moving across the page. She answered questions when called on. She didn’t raise her hand, but she didn’t need to.

Teachers knew her.

They trusted her answers.

They relied on them.

Across the room, Zack sat two rows back.

He didn’t speak.

Not once.

But he wrote constantly.

Notes. Observations. Something.

Serena found herself glancing at him.

Once.

Then again.

It wasn't just curiosity.

It was irritation.

Why did he seem so… unaffected?

Most people reacted to her. One way or another. Fear. Admiration. Resentment.

Zack?

Nothing.

And that—

That felt wrong.

---

After class, the hallway filled again.

Everything back in place.

Serena stepped out, her friends falling into step beside her.

“So what are we doing after school?” Vanessa asked.

“I have practice,” someone said.

“I’m free,” another added quickly.

Serena didn’t answer immediately.

Her eyes had already found him again.

Zack.

Standing by the lockers.

Alone.

Like always.

The same posture. The same quiet presence.

The same… distance.

Something shifted in her chest.

Not sympathy.

Never that.

Something sharper..

Boredom.

And that was dangerous

---

Serena slowed her pace.

Just slightly.

Enough to change direction.

“Hey,” she called.

Zack looked up.

That was his first mistake.

For a second, confusion showed on his face

Then something else.

Uncertainty. Like he wasn't sure she was talking to him

He glanced behind him

She was. And it wasn't good

“Come here,” Serena said.

Her friends fell silent instantly.

They knew that tone.

Zack hesitated.

It was small. Almost unnoticeable.

But Serena saw it.

Then he walked toward her.

Step by step.

Careful.

Like he was approaching something he didn’t fully understand.which was true.

Good Serena thought.

Serena tilted her head slightly, studying him again.

Up close, the same feeling returned.

There was something there.

Something she couldn’t control immediately.

And she hated it .

“You’re in my history class,” she said.

Zack nodded. “Yeah.”

His voice was still quiet.

Still steady.

Serena crossed her arms loosely.

“I need a favor.”

Behind her, she could feel the shift—her friends leaning in, interest raising

Zack frowned slightly. “What kind of favor?”

Serena smiled.

Not the polite one.

Not the one teachers saw.

The real one.

“The kind you don’t say no to”

Zack’s eyes flickered, searching her face like he was trying to figure something out.

For a second—

it looked like he might refuse.

That he might say no.

That he might break the pattern.

Serena’s smile didn’t change.

But something in her gaze hardened.

A challenge.

---

“…Okay,” Zack said.

There it was,like she expected.

Predictable.

Easy.

Serena straightened, already losing interest now that the answer was set.

“I’ll text you,” she said.

Zack blinked. “You have my—”

“I have it.”

Of course she did. She was Serena

She turned away before he could say anything else.

Conversation over.

---

As they walked off, her friends immediately closed in again.

“What was that?” Vanessa whispered, barely containing her excitement,Because she knew what was coming next.

Serena didn’t answer right away.

She glanced back.

Zack was still standing there.

Watching her.

quiet, like he was observing her. And

Like he knew something was wrong.

But he just didn’t know how wrong.

Serena felt that same sharp flicker again.

That same dangerous edge of boredom turning into something else.

Something creative.

Something cruel.

Her lips curved slowly.

“Something fun,” she said.

---

---

Zack didn’t move for a long moment.

Then, slowly, he turned away.

And just like that—

everything was already in motion.

He just didn’t know it yet.
