Pendant une partie de la nuit, ils marcheraient de travers, vers les terres basses, puis ils reviendraient sur une route plus sûre au matin. S’ils atteignaient Fendreval avant midi, ils auraient peut-être encore une chance de passer pour des voyageurs ordinaires. S’ils atteignaient Fendreval. Un bruit monta derrière eux. Pas une voix. Pas un chien. Un sifflement court. Gared s’arrêta net. La jument faillit heurter son épaule. Aveline tira sur les rênes juste à temps.
