The Moment Everything Broke

I wasn’t supposed to die that night.
At least, that was what it felt like as the world slipped away from me. But deep down, I knew the truth.
Some people died long before their hearts stopped beating.
And I had been dying for months.
My fingers clung to the ice-cold railing of the balcony, the rain sliding over my hands until I could barely feel them anymore. Below me, the city glittered like nothing was wrong. Cars moved through the streets. Lights burned in apartment windows. Somewhere, people were laughing. Loving. Going on with their lives.
And I was standing above all of it, trying to decide whether one more breath was worth taking.
I had loved him too much.
That was my first mistake.
I had believed him too easily.
That was my second.
But the worst mistake of all?
I had made him my whole world and expected him not to destroy it.
A bitter laugh trembled in my throat, but it broke before it could become a sound. Was this what love did to a person? Did it hollow you out slowly, piece by piece, until one day you looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the girl staring back?
Because I didn’t recognize myself anymore.
For months, I had waited for him. For a call. For a message. For an explanation that would make the pain mean something. I had searched his silence for answers until there was nothing left of me but questions.
Did he ever love me?
Did he ever choose me?
Or had I only been a place to rest until he found the life he actually wanted?
No answer came.
It never did.
Only the pain stayed.
And God, it stayed so well.
It followed me into every room. It slept beside me at night. It sat on my chest every morning, heavy enough to make breathing feel like work.
Maybe he was with her right now. Maybe he was smiling at her the way he used to smile at me. Maybe his hands were touching her skin with the same tenderness that had once made me believe I was safe. Maybe he was whispering the same beautiful lies into her ear.
And I was still here.
Still loving him.
Still breaking for a man who had already walked away.
Rain blurred my vision as I looked down at the city below. The wind pulled at my hair, cold and sharp against my face.
I thought of the life we were supposed to have. A small apartment. Morning coffee. His arms around me before the world could reach us. Lazy Sundays. Quiet nights. A future that had once felt so real I could almost touch it.
We hadn’t wanted much.
Just each other.
But somewhere between his promises and his silence, I had disappeared.
I took one step forward.
Then another.
The balcony edge pressed against my legs.
My heart didn’t race.
That scared me most.
There was no panic left. No fight. No desperate voice begging me to step back.
Only a strange, empty calm.
Maybe this was what happened when a person ran out of pain. Maybe the body kept standing even after the soul had already let go.
I closed my eyes. For one second, I let myself remember him the way I wished he had been. Not the man who left. Not the man who broke me. But the man who once held my face between his hands and looked at me like I was the only thing in the world worth saving.
A sob tore through me.
Because even after everything…
Even at the very end…
I still wanted him to save me.
But he wasn’t coming.
He never came when I needed him most.
The rain mixed with my tears as I leaned forward into the open air. This would stop the bleeding. This would stop the waiting. This would stop his name from tearing through me every time I breathed.
Maybe, finally, I would forget him.
Maybe, finally, I would be free.
So I let go.
And for one brief, impossible second, the world was silent.
No pain.
No fear.
No him.
Just the wind.
Just the fall.
Just me.
But the fall wasn’t what killed me.
It was the voice that screamed my name from behind.
