Summary

Téo Alvarez never asked to be special. Growing up in a small town with only his Abuela's strange stories to keep him company, he always thought Día de los Muertos was just a tradition-candles, flowers, memories. But this year, something's different. A few days before the festival, Téo uncovers a truth that cracks his world wide open: he's a demigod, born of ancient power and blood older than history. And worse-the Fifth Sun, the very heart of the world, is dying. Without it, everything will fall into darkness. To save the world, Téo must journey across myth and memory to find the forgotten gods of the previous Suns-beings who ruled before Tonatiuh ever rose-and convince them to help. But the gods don't give aid freely... and some would rather see the world end than rise again. The clock is ticking. The sun is fading. And Téo Alvarez is the last light left. ~~~~~~~~ For my little brother, who is too young to understand this tale. Prologue

Before the world ends, it forgets.

That is how it has always been.

Five times the gods built the world from blood and bone. Five times the Sun rose, ruled, and fell. Five times, the gods waged wars in the sky — not to save humanity…

but to decide which of them deserved to burn.

Now the Fifth Sun hangs heavy in the sky. Its light flickers. Its heart weakens.

Tonatiuh — the god of fire — was supposed to rule this age until the end of time. But gods are greedy. Power makes them afraid.

When the Fifth Sun falls, the world will need a new sun to rise.

But there will be no volunteers.
