What is your opinion?
The reader under the quagga's spell
"This story has me enthralled under the spell of the quagga wanting to read the rest to understand the nature of the quagga and its spell and to know the final outcome of the plot. It does not lack for plot and adventure and is a good page turner. It is also very original. The spirit of the quagga feels a bit like the spiritual nature of the unicorn."
The Colonial Legacy
"This is my favorite kind of historical fiction, which both teaches you something new (never even heard of a "quagga" before, but plays with historical fact in an informed way. Told in a series of very short vignettes, each one spanning a few years--until leaping into the present at 2015-the story dramatizes history in a believable way, while also raising the question of what might have been. It's written in a direct, almost documentary fashion, which blurs the lines between history and speculation as well. Though a quick read, it reminds you of all the atrocities committed by the British empire in its mania to collect, categorize, and display the world in books and museums. Hopefully, once in a while, something got away and survived the colonial grasp. I guarantee you'll leave this story thinking about other extinct species and Googling the quagga to see if, by some miraculous feat, the story proves out to be true."
Loved the idea
"The notion that the quagga is still out there, confounding anyone who came in contact with it, would be a great triumph of nature. The story is purposely vague, I guess, because of the humans' befuddlement, but it would have been good to include some details of the settings"
