Chapter 1: Bought in Blood and Shadow
Dante's Flame
*An Omegaverse Shifter Romance*
Chapter 1: Bought in Blood and Shadow
The narrow alley was a disgusting, rotting pit of human misery. The air was thick and choking with the overpowering stench of old piss, rotting garbage, stale vomit, and the metallic tang of dried blood that had soaked into the cobblestones over years. Rats scurried along the walls, their tiny claws scraping against stone. The sharp, vicious crack of the slaver’s whip echoed harshly off the damp brick walls like a curse from the gods themselves. The slaver was a repulsive creature — greasy stringy hair matted to his sweaty scalp, yellow rotting teeth visible when he grinned cruelly, a bloated potbelly spilling over his belt, and clothes stained with months of grime, food, sweat, and worse. His body odor was nauseating: sour sweat, cheap whiskey, and unwashed filth that made Dante’s empty stomach churn violently with every breath.
Dante curled tightly on the filthy, wet cobblestones, his skeletal arms wrapped protectively around his scarred ribs. Each vicious lash of the whip burned like liquid fire across his back and sides. The rough, jagged stones dug painfully into his bruised skin and exposed wounds. He bit down hard on his lower lip until it split open, warm metallic blood flooding his mouth. He refused to scream. He would not give the bastard that satisfaction. *Just endure it,* he thought bitterly, teeth gritted against the pain. *Pain always fades eventually. They always get bored. Survive one more day.*
When the whipping finally ceased, Dante struggled to lift his head. His crimson eyes burned with raw, unfiltered hatred as they locked onto the tall, powerfully built stranger standing at the mouth of the alley. The man was enormous — easily well over six and a half feet tall, with broad shoulders that strained the dark blue dress shirt unbuttoned at the top, revealing a glimpse of a powerful, tanned chest dusted with dark hair. Thick, corded arms and a wide, muscular frame spoke of raw strength, while black dress pants hugged powerful thighs. Black curly hair framed a strong, angular face with a chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, and piercing green eyes that seemed to cut through the dim alley like they could see every secret Dante tried to hide. The stranger radiated a quiet, commanding presence that made the air feel heavier around him.
*He’s just a man,* Dante thought. *Another bastard looking for cheap entertainment or a new toy to break.*
Dante spat a thick glob of blood onto the cobblestones near the man’s boots. His voice came out as a hoarse, venomous rasp.
“Enjoying the show, mongrel? If you have the coin, buy me—otherwise, keep walking and let me rot.”
The stranger didn’t hesitate. He reached into his pocket and tossed several coins to the slaver. The greasy man snatched them greedily out of the air, laughing with foul breath.
“Let’s go.” The stranger turned on his heel and started walking away with calm expectation.
Dante snarled with rage but staggered to his feet, every movement sending fresh waves of agony through his battered body. He caught up quickly and grabbed the stranger’s arm in a vice-like grip, nails digging deep into skin. The stranger continued walking without reaction. When they reached the sleek black Porsche 911 Turbo parked at the end of the alley, the stranger opened the passenger door. “Get in.”
Dante’s cheeks flushed at the idea of getting blood over such a nice car, but he climbed into the low-slung sports car, wincing sharply as his bruised ribs protested the movement. The interior smelled of rich, luxurious leather and subtle masculine cologne. The stranger leaned across Dante’s broken body to grab the seatbelt and click it firmly into place. The sudden closeness, the heat of another man’s body pressing over him, the feeling of being trapped — it triggered a violent flash of memory. Hands pinning him down. Hot breath on his neck. Pain. So much pain. Dante’s heart slammed against his ribs as panic surged.
With a guttural roar, Dante drove his elbow hard into the stranger’s ribcage. “Fucking bastard!”
The stranger didn’t flinch. He simply straightened up, closed the passenger door with a solid thud, and walked around to the driver’s side. The Porsche’s powerful engine purred to life with a deep, throaty rumble that vibrated through the seats. They drove through the dark streets and out of town into pitch blackness, only the bright headlights cutting through the dense forest road.
**Inside the stranger, his wolf paced restlessly.**
*Mate. Ours. Stubborn and fiery even when broken. Smells like smoke and feathers and ancient power. We will fix him. Protect him. Keep him safe forever.*
The drive lasted nearly an hour. The luxurious leather seats and gentle heat slowly eased some of Dante’s pain. *He still hasn’t hit me back,* Dante thought in growing confusion. *Why? Most would have beaten me bloody for less.*
An hour later, the stranger turned down a long gravel path lined with towering ancient trees. The low car rumbled over the stones until they reached the clearing. The main pack house was breathtaking — a grand two-story log and timber structure with warm golden light spilling from large paned windows framed by thick wooden beams. A wide wraparound porch with sturdy rocking chairs and hanging lanterns circled the front and sides. Smaller, cozier cabins nestled among the trees and wildflower gardens. Smoke curled lazily from the stone chimney, carrying the comforting scents of woodsmoke and roasting meat.
Then Dante saw the children in the full moon light. A lively group of them raced across the open grass, laughing and shrieking with joy. Most shifted fluidly between human kids and wolf pups — fluffy gray, brown, and black bundles tumbling, play-biting, and chasing each other with happy yips. But not all — a red fox darted between playmates with a bushy tail, a small black bear cub rolled playfully with a wolf, and a sleek lynx kitten pounced from a low branch before shifting back to a giggling little girl.
Dante blinked hard, his head spinning. *This can’t be real. I’m hallucinating from the beating. Or this is a fever dream right before I die. Kids don’t turn into animals. That’s impossible.*
**Deep inside Dante, something ancient and warm stirred — a quiet voice he didn’t recognize as his own.**
*Safe here… Warm den… Fire can rest.*
Inside the main house, the great room smelled wonderfully of woodsmoke, fresh bread, roasted meat, and fragrant herbs. High vaulted ceilings supported by massive wooden beams, a huge stone fireplace crackling with a low fire, oversized leather couches piled with soft blankets and colorful pillows, and a very long heavy wooden dining table capable of seating twenty or more filled the warm, inviting space.
A woman came bustling forward. She was short and pleasantly plump, with silver-streaked chestnut hair pulled into a loose bun, rosy cheeks, and kind, sparkling hazel eyes that radiated pure maternal warmth and comfort. She felt like safety itself — unconditional love. Her floral apron was dusted with flour and carried the sweet scent of vanilla and cinnamon.
She hugged the stranger tightly. “How has everyone been today, Miss Maggy?” the stranger asked, chuckling, but she didn’t respond, just looked past him in disbelief.
Miss Maggy spotted Dante and her face crumpled with horror. She rushed over and pulled him into a fierce but incredibly gentle hug against her soft, round body. Dante stiffened instantly, every muscle locking up. The sudden warmth and softness, the way her arms wrapped around him so tightly — it felt too much like the way others had grabbed him before. His heart hammered wildly. For a split second he almost shoved her away, but something in her gentle hold and the soft vanilla scent of her apron made him freeze instead. He didn’t pull back. He just stood there, trembling, eyes wide and wary.
“Oh good heavens, dear! You poor thing. All skin and bones and bruises. Come, come upstairs with me right this instant!”
She ushered him upstairs to a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed, sitting area by tall balcony doors overlooking the dark forest, and a luxurious en-suite bathroom. “Now you just go and take a bath, sweetie. There will be new clothes and food for you. Don’t you worry about a thing.” Then Miss Maggy hurried bustling out of the room.
Dante filled the large clawfoot tub, watching the steaming water swirl and rise. The bathroom was quiet except for the gentle rush of water from the faucet. He hesitated for a long moment, fingers trembling as he slowly peeled off his dirty, bloody, ripped clothes. Each piece of fabric stuck to old wounds and fresh bruises, pulling painfully as he removed it. When he was finally naked, he caught his reflection in the mirror — the ugly map of scars crisscrossing his lean torso, the visible ribs, the hollow cheeks. Shame burned hot in his chest. He looked away quickly and stepped into the tub, sinking slowly into the steaming water.
The hot water stung his open wounds sharply at first, like needles piercing every cut and lash mark. He hissed through his teeth, gripping the edges of the tub. But as he forced himself to stay submerged, the pain gradually eased into a deep, soothing warmth. The heat melted into his aching bruised muscles and stiff bones, loosening years of built-up tension. Silent tears slipped down his cheeks, mixing with the bathwater as something inside him finally began to crack.
**The inner voice whispered softly.**
*Rest, little spark… Strength returns… Flame remembers.*
The stranger had gone and gathered several large bags of donated clothes from the pack members. He moved from cabin to cabin with calm purpose, accepting the offerings with quiet thanks. Some pack members asked gentle questions, but he kept the answers short — the new arrival needed time and space. When he returned upstairs, he paused outside the bathroom door, listening to the faint sound of water.
He spoke gently through the closed door. “There’s a robe on the back of the door and I brought you clothes from the pack members.” Inside the room, he set the bags down and began taking the clothes out one by one. He folded each piece neatly — soft shirts, comfortable pants, warm sweaters — and placed them carefully into the dresser drawers, wanting everything to be ready and welcoming when Dante emerged.
**His wolf watched with quiet approval.**
*Our mate will have clean things now. No more rags. No more filth. We will give him everything.*
Dante emerged in the plush white robe, damp hair clinging to his forehead. The stranger’s breath hitched sharply at the sight. The clean, freshly bathed Dante — skin still flushed from the hot water, robe hanging loosely off one shoulder — hit him like a punch to the gut. His eyes traced the visible scars on Dante’s collarbone and chest where the robe gaped open. Fresh bruises and old silvery scars marked the young man’s pale skin. The sight sent a sharp stab of pain through the stranger’s chest.
**His wolf snarled in fury and agony.**
*They hurt our mate. So many scars. So much pain. We will kill every person who ever touched him.*
But beneath the rage, something darker and more primal stirred. Dante’s scent — now clean and intensified by the bath — wrapped around the stranger’s senses like a drug. Sweet, smoky, with that underlying ancient fire. Heat flooded his veins. His body reacted instantly. He had to grip the back of the chair to stop himself from crossing the room and pulling Dante into his arms.
**His wolf growled low and hungry.**
*Mate. Ours. Smells so fucking good. Clean. Ready. Want him. Need him.*
The stranger forced himself to stay still, swallowing hard. His voice came out rougher than he intended. “Eat, omega,” he said, gesturing to the tray. “But take it slow. You’re so malnourished you’ll make yourself sick if you eat too much too fast.”
Dante sat down opposite him, still tense. He picked up the spoon with trembling fingers and began eating carefully, each bite a revelation after years of near-starvation.
The stranger watched him with quiet intensity, his green eyes dark with a mix of pain, protectiveness, and barely contained desire.
“What’s your name, omega?” the stranger asked gently.
“It’s… Dante.” He looked down, fidgeting. “And you are…?”
“Nice to meet you, Dante. I’m Mike.”
Dante managed a weak smile. “Nice to meet you too, Mike.”
Mike leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on the table, his face calm but focused. Dante, on the other hand, kept shifting restlessly in his seat, his legs twitching under the table as a storm of questions swirled wildly in his head.
*Omega? What the hell does that mean? Why does he keep calling me that? And what was all that with the kids turning into animals outside? Am I losing my mind? Is this some kind of cult?*
“You been living with humans your whole life, haven’t you?” Mike asked, voice low and careful.
Dante nodded slowly, eyes fixed on his plate. “Yes… At least, I thought so. Until now.” He shifted again, crossing and uncrossing his legs.
Mike’s expression remained steady, but his jaw tightened just a fraction.
**His wolf was practically howling inside him.**
*He knows nothing. Nothing at all. Our mate is so lost…*
“You can’t shift, can you?” Mike continued gently. “I’m guessing the human who sold you wasn’t aware of your true nature. To be fair, it doesn’t seem like you’re even aware.”
Dante’s head snapped up, his crimson eyes wide with confusion and alarm. He leaned forward slightly, gripping the edge of the table. “I don’t understand… What do you mean, ‘true nature’?” *Shift? True nature? Is this guy crazy? Or am I?*
Mike’s face stayed calm and reassuring, though his shoulders tensed a little. He shifted in his chair, turning more toward Dante. “Were your parents human? Grandparents human?”
“I… I don’t remember much about my family,” Dante admitted, his voice shaky and uncertain. He fidgeted with the robe again, pulling it tighter around himself. “I was only a small child when they died. They told me my parents had enormous debts. After they passed, the creditors took everything — the family fortune was completely gone. I was sold to the creditors to help repay what they owed. They were nobles, I think. Wealthy and influential at one point. That’s really all I really know.” *Why is he asking about my family? What does any of this have to do with those kids turning into animals? None of this makes any sense...*
“More than likely you’re a throwback then,” Mike explained patiently, his face softening with empathy. “Means you got your traits from generations ago and no one knew it was in your blood. It happens but it’s rare.”
Dante’s eyes widened, his mouth slightly open in disbelief. He leaned back in his chair, staring at Mike like he’d grown a second head. “Generations ago? Like… centuries?” *This can’t be real. None of this makes sense. Is he playing some kind of sick game?*
Mike nodded slowly, his expression steady but kind. “I’ve seen it skip one or two generations but if your parents and grandparents were human then it must go back further. It’s also the reason you’re still alive. Shifters can endure a lot more than humans.”
Dante absorbed the words in stunned silence, his mind racing so fast it made him dizzy. *Shifters? Endure more? What the hell is he talking about?* He moves restlessly in his seat again, his hands trembling slightly as he set down his spoon.
Mike smiled softly, watching Dante’s face carefully. “I don’t want to overwhelm you too much. When you’re done eating there are clothes in the drawers and you can sleep in the bed. Ok?”
Dante nodded gratefully, though his mind was still spinning with a thousand unanswered questions. “Thank you, Mike. For everything.”
“Welcome to the pack, Dante.”
Dante collapsed into the large, soft bed, exhaustion claiming him swiftly. The mattress dipped gently beneath his meager weight, the thick, plush comforter and multiple layers of soft blankets wrapping around his battered body like a warm, protective cocoon he had never known. After years of sleeping on cold stone floors, filthy mats, or nothing at all, the sheer luxury of it felt almost overwhelming — too soft, too comfortable, almost dangerously good to be real. The pillows cradled his aching head and neck with incredible gentleness, supporting every bruise and knot. His torn back, bruised ribs, and exhausted muscles finally began to unclench as the bed seemed to absorb years of built-up tension and pain.
A chaotic storm raged inside him. Part of him waited for the other shoe to drop — for this kindness to turn cruel, for rough hands to grab him in the night. Yet another fragile part, buried deep beneath layers of trauma, felt a tiny, flickering spark of hope. The clean scent of fresh sheets, the quiet safety of the room, the steady breathing of the stranger across the space… it was all so foreign.
Dante’s inner voice whispered warmly as he drifted off.
Safe… Rest now… He will protect the flame.
With one last trembling exhale, exhaustion finally claimed him completely, pulling him down into a deep, dreamless sleep for the first time in years.
Mike’s wolf murmured with deep satisfaction.
Our mate is here. Broken but strong. We will heal him. Teach him. Love him. He is ours.
