The Gods
Eternity was a cruel forever. Eons passed with no life, eons passed with it. Naturally, boredom set in for many of the gods, and some decided to try to destroy the world for entertainment. If all life was destroyed in the process, so be it.
Although the number of gods was numerous, most didn't find a chance to interact with one another since the world was vast and they were all spread out. A god of tundra wouldn't see a god of wildfire or desert, an ocean god wouldn't see a sky god, and an earth god had simply never met a sun god. For many, the fights -- world ending events -- had been the first interaction in thousands of years. These were seldom done out of rage or for revenge, but simply to amuse the beast of boredom.
As a child grows weary of its old toy, the gods grew weary of destruction and fighting and decided.
And so another form of fun was born. The art of growth. Of manipulation.
First, word was discussed amongst a few of the gods who had contact with one another. The desert god spoke to the sun god; the sun god spoke to the sea god; the sea god spoke to the river god, and the river god spoke to the god of life.
The idea of what would they look like, what would be their flaws, what would they hate and love. How smart would they be, how powerful, how cruel.
Humans were created. Rather stupid and fickle and destroy everything they touch.
The goddess of life regrets making them. In her image, in the image of all the gods. However, they were solely her creation, a stain on her eternal life.
With her creation, others were born. The god of words and books, the god of agriculture, the gods of death. The gods of instruments - one can't be the god of flutes and drums (they can, and there is a god of just that) -- the gods of travel, the gods of food.
And so came the age of humans and their short, insignificant lives. At first, the gods took so much enjoyment, but frequently forgot that the life of a human was so much less than their lives, and they would try to stir up chaos, wait what felt like a moment, and then whisper sly nothings to the human leaders again only to realize the men and women were on their deathbeds. It took some adjustment.
Good and evil, the ages old morals set in stone by the grand stories told by gods who had none and cared for naught but fun. Eventually, worship started in different forms across different parts of the world. Humans were involved deeply with the gods for centuries, with the gods whispering to them, manipulating some into starting fights, wars, causing chaos and death until the gods of death were worn thin and fatigued to the point that one nearly quit, leaving the lands in chaos.
Laws were borne from these flaws. Less outright communication, less chaos causing, which meant less death. Of course, this left many gods bored and they sought other ways to entertain themselves.
The gods had created -- more like just the god of life -- and so they had expected to always be a major part of the humans' lives. However, something unprecedented happened. As generations passed and humans died and had children, many gods were forgotten or warped.
And once they were forgotten, they could not talk to humans again, leaving them feeling more lost than ever before. And if they were forgotten, usually the humans would mix them up with another god who would now be a more important god of this and that. The god of the seas became the god of sea travel, fishing, and water. The sun god became the god of deserts and heat. On and on, until infighting killed off many humans, and only remnants were left.
Humans were perseverant, however, and bounced back in terms of population in another few hundred years. They traveled every corner of the planet, found almost every forest, and worshiped the gods they had.
To the disgust of Ji.
