Summary

This is book 2 of The Night Library. This book CANNOT be read as a standalone. It WILL spoil book 1. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Some doors are not meant to be found again. The library is gone. Whatever remained of it has slipped beyond reach, leaving behind only silence- and the uneasy sense that something has not been left behind at all. Isla should have answers now. Instead, what she carries is heavier: fragments that don't fit, truths that refuse to stay buried, and the growing certainty that the story didn't end where it was supposed to. Because something has shifted. What was once hidden begins to surface in ways it shouldn't, and the deeper Isla is pulled into it, the more the world around her begins to fracture. As if something is trying to find its way back. And this time, it isn't alone. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please do not upload any part of this story to AI or language-processing platforms. Prologue

Time did not move in the Underworld.

It stretched. Broke. Folded back on itself until moments lost meaning and pain became the only measure left.

Lucien learned that quickly.

There were no chains on him- none he could see, at least- but he was not free. The place itself held him, pressed into him, until even the air felt like a command. Shadows clung too closely. Whispers followed, not in words, but in knowing.

He witnessed what the dark did to the lost.

Souls unraveled slowly here. Not torn apart- no, that would have been too merciful- but stripped, thread by thread, until nothing remained but something hollow and obedient. He saw them beg.

Saw them break. Saw what was left after.

And worse-

He helped.

At first, he resisted. Refused. Fought against the pull of whatever ruled this place. But resistance only reshaped the punishment. The Underworld did not need to force him. It only needed time.

Time, and memory.

It found the fractures in him, the old guilt he had buried beneath centuries of careful control. It dragged them forward, made them real again. Every life he had failed to save. Every choice he had justified. Every moment he had chosen duty over mercy.

It made him relive them-

and then made him choose again.

Sometimes, he chose wrong.

Sometimes, he did not recognise that he had.

And through it all, there was one thing that did not belong here. It stayed with him like absolution, like deliverance.

A thought. A name.

Isla.

He did not know how long he held onto it. It flickered, fragile against the weight of everything else, but it endured where nothing else did. In the quiet between suffering, he would think of her- of the way she looked at him as though he were more than what he had become.

It hurt.

More than anything here, it hurt.

Because it was the only thing that felt untouched by the dark.

He clung to it. Toher. Even as the Underworld pressed in, even as the edges of himself began to blur, he held onto that single, fragile thread.

After centuries of not wanting, he finally let himself want.

He wanted to return. To her.

Isla.

Isla.

Isla-

Until one moment, he reached for it-

and found nothing.

No resistance. No tearing.

Just absence.

The name slipped from him as though it had never been there at all.

Lucien stilled.

Something was missing. He could feel the shape of it, the hollow left behind, but there was nothing to fill it. No memory. No face. No reason for the ache that lingered in his chest.

Only emptiness.

And the Underworld, at last, was quiet.

He moved after that.

Not with purpose- he no longer remembered what purpose felt like- but with a slow, unyielding instinct that drove him forward through shifting corridors of shadow and ruin. The world bent around him, unfamiliar and endless, but he did not stop.

Until he found the door.

It stood alone, untouched by the decay around it.

Unmarked. Unbroken.

Closed.

Lucien approached it without hesitation. Something in him- something deeper than thought, deeper than memory- recognised it.

He reached for the handle.

It did not move.

He tried again. Harder this time. The door remained still, unyielding beneath his grip, as though it existed beyond him, beyond the rules that bound everything else in this place.

For a long moment, he simply stood there.

Then, slowly, he rested his hand against the wood.

“I will open it,” he said.

The words felt strange, unused. Hollow.

But they settled into the silence with quiet certainty.

A vow, made without knowing why.

Lucien did not leave the door.

Time stretched. Or perhaps it did not.

It did not matter.

He remained where he was, hand against the unyielding surface, waiting- for something he could not name, for a reason he could not remember.

He did not know what lay beyond it.

Only that he would find a way through.

No matter how long it took.
