Chapter 1: The Replacement
The crash mat absorbed Adrian's weight with a heavy thud. He pushed himself up, breathing hard, the familiar burn settling in his muscles. Lights glared down, turning the rehearsal hall into a stark cage of mirrors and metal beams.
"Again," the stunt coordinator barked. "Too soft on the landing, Adrian. Needs to sell the impact."
Adrian nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. His usual stunt double, Mateo, had been sidelined with a fractured wrist. The replacement stood waiting his turn, lean and silent in the shadows near the exit door. Luca Vale. The name was vaguely familiar – a journeyman stuntman, former boxer according to the briefing.
They took position opposite each other. Adrian locked eyes with the newcomer. Up close, Luca was younger than he'd looked across the room. Mid-twenties maybe, with sharp blue eyes and messy blond hair escaping his ponytail. Scars traced faint lines over his knuckles, probably mementos from the ring.
The choreographer walked them through the moves. Close quarters combat sequence. Grab, spin, takedown. Simple enough. Adrian initiated the grab. Luca flowed into the counter-move with fluid grace, spinning out of the hold and planting a hand firmly on Adrian's chest to demonstrate the pivot.
"Push off harder here," Luca instructed, voice low and gravelly. His palm felt hot through Adrian's thin t-shirt. "Gotta commit to the momentum."
Adrian blinked. No "Mr. Thorne." No deferential nod. Just calm, professional instruction. It was… disconcerting. He wasn't used to people handling him without visible awe.
They ran the sequence again. Luca's movements were efficient, powerful. He threw Adrian onto the mat with controlled force, his body covering Adrian's for a split second before rolling off. The scent of clean sweat and leather filled Adrian's nose.
"Better," Luca murmured, pulling Adrian to his feet. His grip was strong, impersonal. "But keep your chin tucked on the takedown. Protect your neck."
Adrian nodded, flustered. He was the A-lister. He gave notes, not the other way around. Yet here was this relative unknown critiquing his technique with casual authority. It grated. It also sent an unexpected shiver down his spine.
The rehearsal ended late. Adrian headed towards the dressing rooms, still buzzing with adrenaline. He stopped abruptly. Luca leaned against the corridor wall, scrolling through his phone.
He looked up, pocketing the device. "Forget something, Thorne?"
Adrian bristled at the informality. "My stunt double usually waits for dismissal."
A faint smirk touched Luca's lips. "I'm a contractor, not a lackey. Coordinator said we're done. So… we're done." He shrugged. "Unless you need help unlacing your boots?"
The cheek of it! Adrian stared. This wasn't how things worked. He was the talent. People deferred. But Luca just met his gaze, unflinching, one eyebrow slightly raised in challenge. Those blue eyes held something Adrian hadn't seen in years – genuine indifference to his celebrity.
He turned away abruptly. "No. I'm fine. See you tomorrow."
Adrian retreated into his dressing room, heart pounding. He stripped off his sweaty gear, the fabric smelling of exertion and rubber mats. In the mirror, his reflection looked flushed, eyes too bright. He splashed water on his face, trying to cool the heat prickling under his skin.
But the image of Luca Vale remained burned behind his eyelids. The confident stance. The scarred knuckles. That infuriatingly calm smirk. And worst of all, the way his body had reacted to the man's nearness, the rough grip on his chest, the solid weight pinning him to the mat.
It wasn't just irritation but something hotter. Dangerous even. Adrian leaned his forehead against the cool glass of the shower door, letting out a slow breath. This wasn't good. Not good at all. But he knew, with a sinking certainty, that he wouldn't stop thinking about that infuriating blond stuntman. Not tonight. Probably not ever.
The hot water streamed down, unable to wash away the memory of that casual touch. Or the terrifying realization that he wanted it to happen again.
