Chapter 1

Ain

Hidden from the eyes of ordinary humans lies Astraea Academy, a breathtaking sanctuary where magic, secrets, and ancient powers come alive.

Taehyung enters the academy gates expecting a fresh start, only to find himself drawn into a world of mystery. And at the center of it all is Jungkook—mysterious, dangerously powerful, and completely closed off from the world.

Forced to work together as partners, they must navigate ancient curses, rivalries, and a growing bond that neither of them expected. But in a place where magic dictates your destiny, can love really conquer the dark secrets hidden within the academy walls?

The story is set in a breathtaking Dark Academia universe centered around Astraea Academy, an ancient stone castle hidden away from the mortal world. The environment is rich with vintage charm, featuring towering marble hallways, flickering candle-lit corridors, and a grand, multi-story library filled with leather-bound spellbooks and floating parchment. The magic here is deeply celestial, tied to the stars, moon, and ancient constellations. Whenever magic is performed, it manifests as glowing midnight-blue mist and shimmering gold particles in the air. The characters dress in elegant, dark-tailored uniforms with long velvet capes, silver rings, and antique accessories, creating a mysterious, cozy, yet intensely dramatic atmosphere. The dominant colors of this world are midnight blue, charcoal black, emerald green, and antique gold, perfectly setting the stage for a deep, magical romance.

The iron gates of Astraea Academy didn’t just open; they breathed.

Taehyung stood at the edge of the dense, mist-shrouded forest, his fingers tightly gripping the strap of his leather bag. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else—something sharp and metallic that tasted like electricity on the tip of his tongue. Ahead of him, the academy loomed like a magnificent shadow against the twilight sky. It was a sprawling, ancient stone castle, its high towers piercing the midnight-blue clouds. Flickering candles glowed from hundreds of arched windows, casting a warm, golden hum onto the cold marble steps below.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady the frantic beating of his heart. For years, he had heard whispers of this place. A sanctuary hidden away from the mundane eyes of ordinary humans, a sanctuary where those born with the cosmic spark were brought to control what made them dangerous. Stepping through the gates, he felt the subtle shift in the air—the heavy, invisible pull of ancient magic wrapping around him like a familiar blanket.

He looked down at his clothes. He wore the standard academy uniform: a tailored charcoal-black coat with an emerald-green trim, and a long, dark velvet cape that brushed against his boots. The fabric felt heavy, expensive, and carried the faint scent of lavender and old paper. Every step he took on the cobblestone pathway felt monumental, as if he were walking away from his past life forever.

As he walked through the heavy wooden double doors into the Grand Hall, his eyes widened, and his breath hitched in his throat. The ceiling wasn’t made of stone; it was an open, enchanted view of the cosmos. High above, galaxies swirled in slow, majestic motions. Constellations of ancient stars shifted and danced, spilling soft, silver starlight onto the polished obsidian floors below. Floating pieces of parchment and glowing quills drifted through the air, automatically sorting themselves into neat piles while owls and mechanical silver birds flew silently between the high arches.

Students were scattered everywhere, talking in hushed, excited tones. Some were making small crystals float above their palms, while others whispered incantations to make their heavy textbooks carry themselves. Taehyung felt small, a solitary figure in a sea of extraordinary talent.

“Room 303, Starspire Tower,” Taehyung murmured to himself, looking down at the heavy brass room token in his hand. The metal was cool against his palm, engraved with the image of a crescent moon swallowing a star.

He navigated away from the crowded hall, stepping into the quieter corridors of the academy. The stone walls here were lined with massive moving oil paintings. The figures inside them—wizards, warriors, and scholars of past centuries—whispered secrets to one another as he passed, their painted eyes tracking his movements with curiosity. Taehyung kept his gaze lowered, feeling the weight of their silent judgment.

The air grew cooler the higher he climbed up the winding spiral staircase of the Starspire Tower. When he finally reached the top floor, the noise of the lower levels had completely faded, replaced by the low, haunting whistle of the wind outside the castle walls. He walked down the narrow hallway until he reached a heavy oak door with the brass numbers 303 shining in the dim light.

He pushed it open, expecting an empty space where he could finally unpack and rest.

Instead, the temperature in the room dropped instantly, freezing the breath in his throat.

A single candle flickered on a dark mahogany desk near the corner, throwing long, distorted shadows across walls lined with thick, leather-bound books. Standing by the tall, arched glass window, looking out into the pitch-black forbidden forest, was a boy. He wore the same dark uniform, but his posture was rigid, dangerous, and entirely closed off. His hands were tucked casually into his pockets, but there was nothing relaxed about the tension in his shoulders.

As the door clicked shut behind Taehyung, the boy turned around slowly. His eyes, sharp, intensely dark, and completely unreadable, locked onto Taehyung’s face. Around his fingertips, a faint, midnight-blue mist crackled with silent, volatile energy. It hissed like a dying flame before completely vanishing into the intricate silver rings that adorned his fingers.

“You’re late,” Jungkook said. His voice was low, cold, and dripping with an unspoken warning that made the hairs on the back of Taehyung’s neck stand up.

Taehyung swallowed hard, refusing to let his fear show. He took a step into the room, letting his leather bag drop to the floor with a soft thud. “The train was delayed by the storm at the border. I assume you’re my roommate?”

Jungkook didn’t answer immediately. He walked away from the window, his movements slow and deliberate, like a predator analyzing its prey. The candlelight caught the sharp angles of his jawline and the dark fringe of hair that fell slightly over his eyes. He stopped just a few feet away from Taehyung, the dark aura around him practically vibrating.

“I don’t do roommates,” Jungkook said flatly, crossing his arms over his chest. “And I don’t do small talk. Stay on your side of the room, don’t touch my things, and don’t get in my way.”

Taehyung eyebrows shot up. The initial shock was wearing off, replaced by a sudden flare of annoyance. He had traveled for two days through a magical storm just to get here, and he wasn’t about to be intimidated by a moody boy with pretty rings.

“Listen,” Taehyung said, his voice steadying as he stepped closer, matching Jungkook’s intense gaze. “I didn’t pick this room, and I certainly didn’t pick you. The headmaster assigned us together. So unless you have the power to rewrite the academy registry with those flashy little sparks on your fingers, I suggest you get used to my presence.”

For a second, the room went completely silent. The candle flame on the desk flickered violently, turning a deep shade of blue for a brief moment before returning to gold. Jungkook’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint passing through them. No one at Astraea spoke to him like that. No one dared to.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with,” Jungkook whispered, the words sounding less like a threat and more like a dark promise.

“Then enlighten me,” Taehyung challenged, tilting his chin up.

Jungkook stared at him for a long, agonizing moment, as if trying to decipher what kind of magic Taehyung possessed to be this brave—or this foolish. Finally, with a dark, mocking smirk, Jungkook turned on his heel and walked toward his side of the room. He climbed onto his bed, leaning his back against the headboard and pulling a thick, black-bound spellbook onto his lap, completely ignoring Taehyung as if he had ceased to exist.

Taehyung let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. His hands were trembling slightly, but he forced himself to walk over to the empty bed on the opposite side of the room. The mattress was covered in deep emerald-green velvet sheets that felt incredibly soft. Above his bed, a small enchanted crystal sphere hung from the ceiling, glowing with a faint, comforting white light.

He began to unpack his things, placing his notebooks, a few dried herbs, and his favorite vintage pocket watch onto the small nightstand. The silence in the room was suffocating, broken only by the occasional rustle of the pages from Jungkook’s book.

Taehyung glanced over at his roommate. Jungkook was completely focused on his reading, but the air around him still felt heavy, charged with a strange, magnetic pull. Taehyung could feel the residue of Jungkook’s magic vibrating in the room—it felt ancient, dark, and incredibly unstable, like a storm trapped inside a glass bottle.

Walking over to the large window, Taehyung looked out at the academy grounds. The forbidden forest stretched for miles, its trees twisting into strange, unnatural shapes under the moonlit sky. In the distance, he could see the glowing barrier that protected the academy from the outside world, pulsing with a faint gold light.

This place was beautiful, but it was also terrifying. It was a fortress of secrets, and looking back at the mysterious boy reading by the candlelight, Taehyung realized that the biggest secret of all might just be sleeping across the room from him.

He climbed into his bed, pulling the heavy velvet blanket up to his shoulders. As he reached up to tap the crystal sphere to dim its light, he took one last look at Jungkook. The dark-haired boy hadn’t moved an inch, but as the room fell into near-darkness, Taehyung could swear he saw those midnight-blue sparks dancing faintly along the edges of Jungkook’s shadow.

Taehyung closed his eyes, the whispering of the wind outside finally lulling him into a restless sleep, knowing that his life at Astraea Academy was going to be anything but ordinary.
