Hello, child.
Emma pov:
It is said that when something major is about to happen in your life, it always begins with small events and minor decisions. The same happened to me when I agreed to replace my friend and babysit her mother’s boss’s six-year-old son.
I made the decision as an act of kindness so my friend could complete her college summer internship without delay, since her mother was sick and someone trustworthy was needed to take her place.
Right now, I’m on the way to my friend’s mother’s boss’s place, which, according to her, is a mansion. The speed of the car blurs the light sound of rain pouring outside the car. I shifted in my place, lost count of it from the moment I settled in this car.
My index finger sketches my neck, a small act proving my nervousness. I clutch the black leather bag that is clinging to me on my left side. My gaze again moved to the rear-view mirror. The driver’s expression is the same from the moment I saw him, and he introduced himself and told me he was instructed to pick me up.
Gradually, houses have started to appear less frequently along the way. I clutch my bag tighter. where is exactly does her mom work?
The car finally came to a stop after one and a half hours of constant driving. I tilt my head and look outside the car, but water droplets on the window make it difficult to see anything clearly outside of it.
The main gate of the property opens with a dramatic sound, allowing the car to get inside. The car stops again after a minute, and it’s my time to finally step out of the car. I hesitate for a second for an unknown reason, but then I shake off the feeling, and the soles of my shoes touch the ground.
The car drove away somewhere in the property. My eyes move to the huge open wooden double door, which welcomes me into this unknown place with unknown people living inside this mansion.
I noticed there were no guards on the main gate, and I assume it must be working on modern technology with cameras and sensors. I shift my gaze from one top corner of the wall to another, and both sides have a camera that changes its angle when it detects any movement.
Both cameras are on me right now. My hand automatically reaches my neck, and I scratch the area below my ear with the thought that someone is watching me from somewhere.
I hook the thin strap of my bag on my left shoulder, take a ‘I will be fine’ breath, and step up the exact seven stairs before stopping at the threshold of the huge door.
A spacious living room with four long gray sofas and a glass table in the middle comes into view. Four huge sofas? More than ten adults must be living in this mansion. A magnificent staircase in the middle. Typical.
I look around for a few more seconds, not a single soul in sight. I bring out my phone from the front pocket of my baggy jeans and call my friend. The call doesn’t connect, and it ends with a beep.
“What the hell?” I look at the signal bar, and it shows zero. My frown deepens. “Zero signal bar! What is wrong with this place?” This place reflects modern technology, but there is no network here. Does this even make sense?
“Hello, child”
“Aaa...” I jumped out and couldn’t help but scream, quickly turning back to the source of the voice. An elderly woman in her 60s stands in front of me. I close my eyes and exhale.
“I’m sorry, child, I didn’t mean to scare you,” she apologizes immediately.
I shake my head. “Please don’t apologize; I was so lost in myself, and I didn’t hear you coming; it’s no one’s fault,” I say politely.
She smiles at my words. “You are Miss Emma?” she asked politely.
“Yes, I’m Emma, Lilly’s friend.” I introduced myself. “And... you?”
“I’m Mrs. Rosy. You can call me Aunt Rosy”
“Oo... okay”
“Come, I will show you your room,” she said, turning around, and I followed her.
The silence of the mansion reminded me of the horror houses from the movies. “This place is quite” I commented while we were moving past the rooms.
“Our boss doesn’t like noise, and I will advise you not to make any,” she said, walking ahead of me.
An awkward laugh left my lips. “I’m not a kid; I don’t make unwanted noise,” I said, like I was defending myself.
The number of rooms on our way made me look back a few times to take note of my way back. We finally stopped in front of the last room of the hall. She opened the double door, and we stepped inside.
A simple but spacious room welcomes me. bed in the middle, attached against the wall; one bathroom door could be seen. A closet attached to the wall with a sliding door. One window and a sitting area against it to enjoy the winds.
Perfect room for simple living.
“This is the room Mrs. Warren used to live in before she fell sick,” Aunt Rosy said. I turned to her. “Before you came, staff already cleaned this room and transferred Mrs. Warren’s clothes left behind in the storage room,” she added.
I can’t help but smile, “Thank you so much.” I thanked her, and she nodded in response.
“Freshen up and rest. I will send some food through the maid. After that, we will meet little master”
“Little master...” I laughed softly. But my laughter stopped as soon as I saw her serious expression. “Sorry…this is the first time I’m babysitting anyone,” I said, looking down.
“It’s okay, you will get used to it,” she said smilingly, and I breathed out, smiling back at her.
She walked past me and left the room. My legs moved towards the closet. I slid the transparent door, and a closet full of nannies’ dresses revealed itself. I pick one from the similar ones. “God, it has to be only black and white.
black stretchable knee-length skirt with a white full-sleeve blouse.
My face twisted looking at the two-coloured closet, “only two months,” I exhale after assuring myself. Moving to the other door of this room, I opened the bathroom door.
More than enough space for a shower, and a sauna beside it. A clean basin with a huge mirror. A floor-mounted toilet Commode in another corner of the bathroom.
A satisfactory smile pulled up on my face. I removed my clothes and threw them into the laundry bag. I walk into the shower and turn it on. Warm water slides from my head to my naked body.
After enjoying fifteen minutes in the shower, I left the bathroom with a bathrobe hugging me and a thin towel on my head. A tray of fresh food is placed on the bedside table. My stomach grumbles at the sight of the food.
My legs automatically move towards the table. I sat down on the bed and grabbed the garlic bread from the tray, taking a big bite of it. “Hmm...” I moan at the delicious taste.
