p < 0.001 that the phase drift originates in the primary coupling array rather than the secondary lattice. Probability of sensor artifact: 0.012. Probability that the drift will exceed tolerance within the next 47 minutes: 0.008.

He adjusted the gain by three increments and waited. The numbers remained steady. Around him the resonance chamber continued its low, even thrum—sixteen synchronized oscillators maintaining the narrow window through which Planet P’s morphic field could be measured without collapse. The air inside the chamber carried the faint metallic tang of warmed cabling and the dry, almost chalky scent of the bonecrete walls. Elias noted both, then dismissed them. Neither datum reached statistical significance against the baseline he had established over seven years of nominal operation.

A soft footfall approached from the left aisle.

“Elias, the secondary array is reporting a 0.8-millisecond offset on the return pulse. Do you want me to—”

“Recalibrate the return transducer first,” Elias said. The sentence left his mouth before the colleague had finished speaking.

The man—tall, silver-haired, eyes the color of glacial ice—paused. His mouth closed on the second half of the question. For 0.6 seconds the only sound was the lattice hum and the faint click of a cooling relay somewhere in the secondary rack.

p = 0.003 that the offset is real. p < 0.001 that I knew the exact wording before he formed it. Probability that this is the third such instance in the last eleven shifts: 0.041.

Elias kept his gaze on the waveform. The colleague recovered smoothly, as they always did.

“Understood. I’ll run the transducer sweep now.”

The footfalls receded. Elias remained at the console and performed the next scheduled measurement. Gravity vector on the left side of his body registered 0.4 seconds behind the right. He logged it. The discrepancy was small enough to fall inside normal diurnal variation, yet he recorded the exact timestamp and the precise lag. Routine demanded it. The left boot, when he shifted his weight to test, landed with a micro-stutter that his body corrected before the discrepancy reached conscious threshold. He noted the correction itself as a separate datum: motor map desynchronization, 0.4-second lag, self-corrected within 180 milliseconds.

When the shift ended he walked the perimeter of the chamber once, checking each oscillator housing by hand. The porcelain-pale skin of his forearms caught the low light and returned it with a faint inner luminosity that never quite resolved into reflection. Long silver-white hair, unbound, moved against the coarse linen collar of his coat. No one on Planet P wore hats or caps; the cultural prohibition was absolute, as though covering the head would sever some necessary contact with the field itself. Elias had never questioned the rule. It felt correct in the same way the lattice frequencies felt correct—until the last several weeks, when the correctness itself had begun to require measurement.

Outside the chamber the settlement lay under its perpetual high mist. Craggy rock formations rose like ruined spires against a sky the color of bruised indigo. The path to his quarters was empty. He noted the temperature differential between the chamber and the open air (1.7 degrees Celsius) and the slight increase in vibrational tug along the soles of his boots. Both values were entered into the evening log before he crossed the threshold.

The quarters were spare: a narrow bed, a single polished metal surface that served as both table and mirror, a narrow window showing only mist and the dark silhouette of the nearest spire. Elias removed the coat, folded it, and placed it on the chair. The fabric was weathered wool with subtle gothic-era stitching along the cuffs, the hems beginning to fray in the particular way that came from repeated exposure to the mist. He performed the final self-assessment of the day while standing before the metal surface.

p = 0.017 that the left hand’s resting position matches the right. p < 0.001 that both hands belong to the same continuous motor map. Probability that the slight delay in the left ring finger’s micro-adjustment is within normal variation: 0.029.

He lay down without extinguishing the small lumen lamp. Sleep came in measured stages, each one logged by the part of his mind that never fully powered down. Alpha rhythm first, then the slow descent into theta. He noted the exact moment the lattice hum usually faded from awareness and recorded that it had not done so completely.

The dream began with a change in pressure.

Not the ordinary drop that accompanied deeper sleep, but a lateral compression, as though the air itself had acquired mass and was pressing inward from all directions at once. Elias registered the sensation as data: vibrational amplitude rising 14 percent above baseline, frequency centered at 47 hertz. The lattice hum that normally faded at sleep onset returned, louder, until it filled the entire auditory field and seemed to vibrate inside the bones of his skull.

A figure stood at the foot of the bed.

It was humanoid in outline—tall, slender, the same porcelain-pale skin and silver-white hair as every other inhabitant of the settlement—yet the proportions were wrong by a fractional degree that the statistical engine could not quite quantify. Limb-to-torso ratio deviated from the local mean by an amount too small to assign a p-value without a new baseline. The eyes were not ice-blue or silver but a deeper, non-reflective violet that absorbed the lumen light without returning it. No clothing of any colonial cut covered the form. The air around it warped in concentric interference patterns, each ring expanding and contracting at precise intervals that matched the 47-hertz carrier now dominating Elias’s auditory field.

Elias attempted to sit up. The motion failed to complete; his body remained supine while a secondary, slightly offset version of the same motion occurred in parallel. The two versions of his arm occupied the same space for 0.8 seconds before the offset collapsed. For that interval he felt the muscles of both versions firing—identical commands sent to slightly different spatial targets. The left deltoid registered the command twice, once on time and once delayed by the same 0.4 seconds that had appeared in the gravity vector during the shift.

The figure spoke. The voice arrived half a second before the lips moved.

“Don’t wake up yet.”

The sentence carried no emotional valence the p-value filter could assign. It was simply present, occupying the same acoustic space as the lattice hum.

“You’re on Planet P.”

The interference patterns brightened. For one measured interval the figure’s outline doubled, one version remaining at the foot of the bed while the other passed through the wall and vanished. The remaining instance raised one hand. Blue energy, thin as a filament, extended from the fingertips and touched the center of Elias’s chest.

The contact produced no pain. It produced instead a perfect statistical certainty that the sensation did not originate in the body currently lying on the bed. A cool spreading from the sternum outward, as though the intercostal muscles receiving the signal belonged to a different respiratory cycle. For 1.2 seconds his heartbeat fell out of phase with itself—two rhythms occupying the same thoracic cavity before realigning. The left side of the ribcage registered the second pulse as foreign, an intrusion that the statistical engine flagged at p < 0.001 before the rhythms snapped back into alignment.

Elias logged the final datum before the dream dissolved:

p < 0.001 that the warning is external.

p = undefined that the body receiving it is singular.

The lattice hum faded. The pressure released. Sleep, or something statistically indistinguishable from it, resumed.
