PROLOGUE: The Stolen Heart (Part I)
Thousands of years before the Age of Vadir Falk...
---
Before kingdoms were carved into mountains...
Before mortals gave names to the stars...
Before even the oldest dragon remembered its first flight...
There stood Yggdrasil.
Not merely a tree.
A universe.
Its roots drank from wells older than time itself, its trunk held together the fabric of existence, and its branches stretched beyond sight, each cradling one of the Nine Realms like emerald jewels suspended in eternity.
Every heartbeat of creation echoed through its living wood.
Every birth.
Every death.
Every whispered prayer.
Every oath.
Every forgotten dream.
Yggdrasil remembered them all.
Its leaves shimmered like liquid emerald beneath an endless celestial sky. Rivers of golden light coursed through its bark, carrying life to every realm. Birds with feathers of starlight nested among its highest branches, while ancient serpents slumbered peacefully around its roots.
There had never been silence here.
Only harmony.
The great stag Eikþyrnir grazed upon the highest boughs, his antlers dripping silver dew that became rivers in Midgard.
Far below, Níðhöggr slept beneath the deepest root, no longer driven by hatred but bound by ancient peace.
And between them raced the tireless messenger...
Ratatoskr.
The little squirrel darted from branch to branch carrying messages between gods, spirits, and creatures alike.
For once...
He carried laughter instead of insults.
Because there was nothing left worth fighting over.
Peace had lasted so long that even the oldest gods struggled to remember war.
---
Above the highest branch rose Asgard.
Its golden halls reflected sunlight brighter than a thousand dawns.
The Bifrost shimmered like flowing crystal between worlds.
Today...
Every god had gathered.
Not for battle.
Not for judgment.
For celebration.
The Festival of Roots.
Once every thousand years the gods honored the Heart of Yggdrasil—the living source from which all life flowed.
No mortal had ever seen it.
Few gods had.
Even among the Aesir and Vanir, the Heart remained sacred beyond words.
---
Odin stood before the gathered assembly.
His single eye held galaxies.
His ravens, Huginn and Muninn, rested silently upon his shoulders.
Beside him stood Thor, laughing as he challenged Tyr to another contest of strength.
Baldr smiled as children chased glowing butterflies across the roots.
Njord spoke with sailors who had crossed every sea.
Freyr gifted harvest blessings.
Frigg embraced young Valkyries.
Even Hel...
Daughter of Loki.
Queen of the dead.
Watched from a respectful distance.
Her solemn face softened beneath the sunlight.
For today...
Death itself celebrated life.
The Nine Realms had never known such balance.
---
Far below the gathering...
Hidden beneath roots wider than mountains...
A lone figure walked.
Their face remained concealed beneath a weathered hood.
Not because they feared discovery.
Because even the World Tree itself seemed reluctant to remember their name.
Every step echoed through ancient tunnels illuminated by veins of golden sap.
The air vibrated with quiet music.
Not played by instruments.
But sung by Yggdrasil itself.
The melody was beautiful.
Painfully beautiful.
The hooded traveler stopped.
Their gloved hand rested against the bark.
Warm.
Alive.
Like placing one's hand upon the chest of a sleeping giant.
The Tree responded.
Golden light pulsed beneath their fingertips.
Almost...
As though recognizing them.
The traveler closed their eyes.
"I'm sorry..."
The whisper disappeared into the endless roots.
---
"You apologize too often."
The voice emerged from the darkness with effortless amusement.
The traveler spun.
No weapon drawn.
No fear shown.
Instead...
Weariness.
A tall man leaned lazily against one of the massive roots.
His smile appeared harmless.
Almost friendly.
Dark green robes shimmered like oil upon water.
Golden eyes danced with impossible intelligence.
Every expression suggested honesty.
Every word promised kindness.
Yet something about him never settled.
Like a shadow that moved when no one looked.
"Loki."
The trickster inclined his head politely.
"You remembered."
"I should leave."
"You've said that three times already."
"I mean it."
"So do I."
Silence settled between them.
Above, distant laughter drifted through the roots.
The celebration continued.
Neither of them joined it.
Loki glanced upward.
"They're happy."
"They deserve to be."
"They deserve the truth."
The traveler stiffened.
"No."
"No?"
"They're protecting the realms."
"They're protecting an illusion."
The hooded figure turned away.
"I won't discuss this."
"You already are."
---
Loki walked beside them, hands clasped behind his back like an old friend enjoying a leisurely stroll.
"You've seen the signs."
Silence.
"You've seen branches beginning to weaken."
Silence.
"You've seen roots struggling."
Silence.
"You've seen futures Odin refuses to acknowledge."
The traveler stopped walking.
"You know nothing."
Loki smiled.
"I know enough."
The words lingered.
Sharp.
Measured.
Dangerously calm.
---
"You've asked yourself the question."
"I haven't."
"You have."
"I haven't."
"What happens when Yggdrasil finally dies?"
The traveler looked away.
Because...
They had asked.
More times than they wished to admit.
Loki stepped closer.
His voice became softer.
Almost compassionate.
"The gods celebrate because they cannot imagine failure."
"They believe the Tree eternal."
"They believe themselves eternal."
"They're wrong."
The traveler swallowed.
"I've watched the roots."
"So have I."
"They're weakening."
"I know."
"And no one listens."
"I know."
---
Loki's smile vanished.
For the first time...
He looked tired.
"They'll never act until it's too late."
"What are you asking?"
"I'm asking you..."
He gestured toward the deepest chamber.
"...to save them."
---
The traveler stared into the darkness ahead.
Beyond the twisting roots.
Beyond rivers of golden sap.
Beyond gates untouched for countless ages.
Something pulsed.
Steady.
Powerful.
Alive.
Each beat echoed through every realm.
The Heart.
The true Heart of Yggdrasil.
The source from which existence itself drank.
The traveler had stood before it only once before.
Centuries earlier.
Odin had trusted them.
Trusted them enough to reveal its location.
That trust now weighed heavier than mountains.
"I can't."
"You can."
"I won't."
"You must."
---
The chamber doors opened without a sound.
Light flooded outward.
Not bright.
Warm.
Comforting.
Inside floated a sphere unlike anything creation had ever known.
Neither crystal...
Nor flame...
Nor star...
Yet somehow all three.
Roots of living gold circled it endlessly.
Every beat sent waves of life rippling through reality itself.
The traveler felt tears forming without understanding why.
It was beautiful.
Perfect.
Sacred.
Loki remained outside the chamber.
"I won't enter."
"Why?"
"It isn't my choice."
The traveler looked back.
"What if you're wrong?"
Loki met their gaze.
Then quietly answered...
"What if I'm right?"
The question hung in the air like a blade.
No threat.
No command.
Only doubt.
For the first time in countless ages...
Doubt entered the chamber of the Heart.
And Yggdrasil shivered.
