Chapter 2- 4

Chapter Two

The Day Everything Fell Apart

Monday mornings at Blackwood Global Holdings were always quiet.

Not peaceful.

Just quiet.

The kind of silence that came from employees who knew one misplaced file, one late report, or one ringing phone during a meeting could earn them a week of Adrian Blackwood's icy disappointment.

Amelia stepped out of the elevator, clutching her coffee.

"Morning, Mel."

She smiled at the receptionist.

"Morning, Grace."

Grace leaned over the desk.

"You survived another weekend?"

Amelia forced a laugh.

"Barely."

She hadn't slept.

Ryan hadn't answered a single one of her calls after storming out the night before.

Thirty-two missed calls.

None returned.

She kept telling herself he just needed time.

Her phone vibrated again.

Ryan.

Her heart lifted.

She answered immediately.

"Ryan—"

The call ended.

She frowned.

Then another message arrived.

You'll see.

Her stomach tightened.

"Amelia."

Her best friend, Jenna, hurried toward her carrying a stack of folders.

"You okay?"

"I think so."

"You don't look okay."

"I'll be fine."

Jenna narrowed her eyes.

"Did you fight with Ryan again?"

Amelia sighed.

"When don't we?"

"You need to leave him."

"It's complicated."

"No." Jenna shook her head. "You make it complicated."

Amelia smiled weakly.

"I have work."

"That's your answer to everything."

"It has to be."

At precisely nine o'clock, the office changed.

People walked faster.

Phones were silenced.

Assistants lined up outside the executive boardroom.

A delegation from one of Europe's largest investment firms had arrived to finalize a partnership that Blackwood Global had spent nearly two years negotiating.

Every detail had been rehearsed.

Every presentation perfected.

Every risk anticipated.

Except one.

Inside the executive conference room...

Adrian Blackwood adjusted the cuff of his navy suit.

The room immediately straightened.

He didn't ask if everyone was ready.

If they weren't...

They shouldn't be there.

He glanced once around the table.

"Begin."

Outside...

The glass entrance doors burst open.

Ryan marched inside.

His face was flushed with anger.

"I need to see Amelia Hart."

Grace stood.

"Sir, do you have an appointment?"

"I don't need one."

"I'm sorry, but—"

"I said I need to see her!"

Heads turned.

Employees looked up from their desks.

Grace pressed the silent security alarm beneath her desk.

"Sir, please lower your voice."

"I'll lower it when my girlfriend comes out!"

On the fourth floor...

Amelia froze.

She knew that voice.

"No..."

She dropped her pen.

Jenna looked at her.

"What is it?"

Without answering, Amelia ran.

The lobby had become a stage.

Ryan pointed toward the offices.

"Tell your boss to stop chasing other people's girlfriends!"

Gasps spread through the room.

"He thinks because he's rich he can steal anyone!"

"Sir—"

"You people think you're above everyone!"

Security arrived.

Ryan shoved one of the guards away.

"Don't touch me!"

The boardroom doors opened.

Silence swept through the building.

Every employee instinctively stood straighter.

Adrian Blackwood walked into the hallway.

One glance.

That was all it took.

His sharp gray eyes took in the scene—the shouting man, security struggling to contain him, frightened staff, and the international guests who had stepped out of the boardroom, confusion written across their faces.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

It rarely did.

But his voice carried enough authority to still the room.

"What," he said evenly, "is going on?"

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"So you're the famous boss."

No one spoke.

No one breathed.

Amelia finally reached the lobby.

"Ryan!"

He turned.

"There you are!"

She grabbed his arm.

"Please. Let's go."

"No!"

"Ryan, please."

"You embarrassed me first!"

"I did not!"

He pointed at Adrian.

"You think because he wears an expensive suit he can take whatever he wants?"

Adrian looked at Amelia for the first time.

Not with curiosity.

Not with sympathy.

Just assessment.

"You know him?"

Amelia's cheeks burned.

"...Yes."

The single word felt like a confession.

Ryan smirked.

"See?"

One of the foreign executives quietly whispered to another.

Another checked his watch.

Their interpreter leaned toward Adrian's executive assistant.

Within seconds, the visitors began gathering their documents.

The room hadn't exploded.

It had simply...fallen apart.

Adrian noticed.

He always noticed.

He turned to the lead representative.

"I apologize."

The older gentleman offered a polite smile, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"Mr. Blackwood, perhaps we should continue these discussions another time."

"It won't happen again."

"I'm sure."

But the words carried no promise.

Only distance.

They shook hands.

The delegation walked away.

Every employee watched them leave.

The sound of the revolving doors echoed through the lobby.

No one spoke until the last visitor disappeared.

Ryan looked around triumphantly, as if he'd won something.

Amelia stared after the departing guests.

Her chest tightened.

She hadn't just been embarrassed.

She'd watched years of work vanish in under five minutes.

Security finally escorted Ryan toward the exit.

He didn't fight anymore.

He simply looked back at Amelia.

"Now he knows your name."

The doors closed behind him.

Silence.

Adrian remained standing where he was.

His gaze settled on Amelia.

Cold.

Unreadable.

"You."

Her throat went dry.

"My office."

He turned without waiting for an answer.

The employees slowly returned to their desks, pretending not to stare.

Jenna caught Amelia's eye from across the lobby.

She wanted to say something—anything—but there were no words that could soften what had just happened.

Amelia took a slow breath.

For the first time since joining Blackwood Global, she truly wished her boss had never learned her name.

Chapter Three

The Man Who Never Smiled

The walk to the executive floor felt longer than it ever had.

Amelia had taken this elevator hundreds of times.

Today, every passing number above the door felt like a countdown.

Ten.

Eleven.

Twelve.

Her palms were damp.

She wiped them against her skirt.

The elevator chimed.

The doors slid open to the quietest floor in the building.

There were no ringing phones.

No idle conversations.

Even the assistants typed softly, as though afraid the keyboards might offend someone.

Every pair of eyes lifted when Amelia stepped out.

Then, just as quickly, lowered.

No one wished her luck.

They all knew luck wouldn't help.

Adrian Blackwood's office occupied the entire corner of the floor.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city.

Dark wood.

Black marble.

No family photographs.

No awards.

No decorations.

Just order.

Everything had a place.

Everything except the chaos that had walked into his company that morning.

His assistant looked up.

"Mr. Blackwood is expecting you."

Of course he was.

She knocked twice.

"Come in."

The voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

That frightened her more.

Adrian stood with his back to her, looking out at the skyline.

He didn't turn around.

"Close the door."

She obeyed.

The soft click echoed through the room.

Silence.

One minute passed.

Maybe two.

He still didn't face her.

She wondered if she should speak.

Apologize.

Explain.

Cry.

Before she could decide—

"How long have you worked here?"

She blinked.

"...Three years."

"I know."

Another pause.

"I wanted to hear if you'd lie."

Her stomach tightened.

Finally, he turned.

His expression revealed nothing.

He walked slowly toward his desk and picked up a file.

Her file.

"You've never been late."

"No, sir."

"You've never missed a deadline."

"No, sir."

"Your evaluations are excellent."

She looked at him, confused.

Was this...

Praise?

"I've read every report you've submitted."

"You have?"

"I read everything that carries this company's name."

His eyes met hers.

"And today..."

He closed the file.

"You became the biggest liability in this building."

The words landed with terrifying precision.

No shouting.

No insults.

Just facts.

Or at least, his version of them.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Are you?"

"Yes."

"What exactly are you sorry for?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

He waited.

Patiently.

Painfully patiently.

"I..."

"I don't know."

"Exactly."

He folded his hands behind his back.

"You're apologizing because that's what people do when they've been caught in something unfortunate."

She swallowed hard.

"But you haven't yet understood what happened."

He walked toward the window again.

"Do you know how many flights our guests took to be here?"

She shook her head.

"Do you know how many legal teams worked on that contract?"

"No."

"Do you know how many employees worked overtime for nearly two years?"

She looked down.

"No."

His reflection stared back at her through the glass.

"Neither do I."

That surprised her.

"But I know this..."

He finally turned again.

"They all deserved better than what happened today."

Tears burned behind her eyes.

"I never asked him to come."

"I know."

"You... do?"

"I had Security review the footage before you entered this office."

He reached for a tablet on his desk.

"You ran toward the situation."

He pressed play.

There she was.

Running.

Not hiding.

Not smiling.

Running.

"I don't believe you planned it."

Relief washed over her.

For exactly three seconds.

Then—

"But intention does not erase consequence."

Her shoulders dropped.

"I understand if you want to fire me."

He studied her.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then...

Something happened.

The corner of his mouth lifted.

Barely.

A smile.

Small.

Controlled.

Gone almost as quickly as it appeared.

Amelia froze.

No.

No, no, no.

She had worked here for three years.

People joked that Adrian Blackwood had been born without the ability to smile.

Yet here he was.

Smiling.

At her.

Her heartbeat stumbled.

Oh, no.

He really hates me.

"I have no intention of firing you."

She stared.

"...Sir?"

"You'll continue working here."

Relief flooded her chest.

Until he continued.

"Just not where you are now."

She frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You've demonstrated poor judgment in separating your personal life from your professional responsibilities."

"I know."

"So from today..."

He walked around his desk and placed a folder in front of her.

"You will report directly to me."

She looked at the folder.

Then back at him.

Surely she had misheard.

"Sir?"

"I don't repeat myself."

Her eyes widened.

"Directly... to you?"

"Yes."

"I'll be your assistant?"

"My project coordinator."

"I don't have executive experience."

"You'll learn."

"I'll only slow you down."

"If you do, you'll be replaced."

His tone remained maddeningly calm.

"You start tomorrow."

She stood there, unable to move.

This wasn't a promotion.

It wasn't a punishment she understood.

It felt like both.

"Why?"

The question escaped before she could stop it.

For the first time, Adrian hesitated.

Just briefly.

Then he answered.

"Because if another disaster follows you..."

"I want to see it coming."

The words stung more than she expected.

He reached for another file, already dismissing her without saying so.

"You may leave."

She turned toward the door.

"Miss Hart."

She stopped.

Without looking back—

"Whatever is happening in your personal life..."

His voice was quieter now.

"...leave it outside my company."

She nodded once.

"Yes, sir."

Then she left.

The elevator doors closed.

The moment they did, Amelia let out the breath she'd been holding for nearly an hour.

She leaned against the mirrored wall.

"He smiled..."

The doors opened on her floor.

Jenna was already waiting.

"What happened?"

Amelia walked past her in a daze.

"My boss..."

She stopped.

Turned.

Her face completely serious.

"...smiled at me."

Jenna blinked.

"...That's good, right?"

Amelia shook her head.

"No."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"He smiled."

Jenna frowned.

"So?"

Amelia looked toward the executive floor as though expecting lightning to strike.

"He must really hate me."

Jenna burst into laughter.

Amelia didn't.

Because after three years at Blackwood Global...

She had never seen Adrian Blackwood smile.

And somehow...

That terrified her more than if he'd fired her.

Chapter Four

An Unwanted Promotion

Amelia didn't sleep.

She had stared at the ceiling until nearly three in the morning, replaying every second of the previous day.

Ryan.

The lobby.

The deal.

Mr. Blackwood's office.

His smile.

She groaned into her pillow.

"Why did he smile?"

At exactly 7:45 a.m., she walked into Blackwood Global carrying a cardboard box.

Three years' worth of belongings fit inside it.

A tiny succulent Jenna had gifted her on her first work anniversary.

A ceramic mug that read Powered by Coffee and Deadlines.

A notebook filled with color-coded sticky notes.

A framed picture of the project team from last Christmas.

Jenna spotted her immediately.

"I still think this is ridiculous."

"So do I."

"You should've quit."

"I like eating."

"...Good point."

Jenna glanced toward the executive elevators before lowering her voice.

"Have you heard?"

"He fired someone?"

"No."

"Worse?"

"Worse."

"He came in at six this morning."

Amelia stared.

"...Who does that?"

"The devil."

The executive floor felt colder today.

Not because of the air conditioning.

Because it belonged to Adrian Blackwood.

His assistant, a woman in her fifties with silver hair pulled into a neat bun, looked up as Amelia approached.

"You must be Miss Hart."

"Yes."

"I'm Margaret."

Margaret offered a small smile.

"I'm sorry."

Amelia blinked.

"...Excuse me?"

"For what's about to happen."

Margaret led her through a glass corridor.

"Mr. Blackwood has had six executive assistants."

"In... how long?"

"Two years."

Amelia nearly tripped.

"Six?"

"The seventh cried before lunch."

"The eighth lasted three days."

"What happened?"

Margaret adjusted her glasses.

"He corrected her grammar."

"...That's all?"

"Three hundred and seventeen times."

Amelia stopped walking.

Margaret didn't.

"Oh dear."

She whispered to herself.

"I'm number nine."

Margaret opened a door.

"This will be your workspace."

It wasn't an office.

It was a glass desk directly outside Adrian's.

No walls.

No privacy.

Every time he opened his door...

He'd see her.

Every time she looked up...

She'd see him.

Perfect.

She wanted to disappear already.

At precisely eight o'clock...

His office door opened.

Adrian walked out carrying a tablet.

He didn't greet her.

He simply placed three folders on her desk.

"Review these."

She nodded quickly.

"Yes, sir."

"I'll need summaries before ten."

"Of all three?"

"Is there another number between one and three that I'm unaware of?"

"...No, sir."

He walked away.

Margaret leaned over.

"He likes you."

Amelia nearly choked.

"What?"

"I've never seen him use sarcasm before nine."

By 9:40, Amelia had finished two reports.

She reached for the third.

Her stomach growled loudly.

Margaret looked over.

"You skipped breakfast."

"...Maybe."

"You'll faint."

"I won't."

Her stomach answered for her.

Margaret sighed.

"Go eat."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"What if he comes out?"

Almost as if summoned by fear...

The office door opened.

Adrian stepped out.

"Miss Hart."

She shot to her feet.

"Sir."

He frowned.

"Sit."

She hesitated.

"You don't need to stand every time I leave my office."

"Oh."

She slowly sat.

"That's... less embarrassing."

He looked at her for a second.

Then walked away without another word.

Margaret covered her mouth.

"What?"

"You made a joke."

"I did?"

"And he didn't fire you."

The morning passed in relentless silence.

Emails.

Reports.

Meetings.

Calls.

By noon, Amelia had discovered something about Adrian Blackwood.

He never wasted words.

If an email could be one sentence...

He wrote one sentence.

If a meeting could last ten minutes...

It lasted nine.

If someone rambled...

He ended the conversation.

Efficiency wasn't something he valued.

It was something he expected.

At one o'clock...

Margaret placed a sandwich on Amelia's desk.

"Eat."

"I didn't order this."

"I know."

"Then who—"

She followed Margaret's gaze.

Adrian's office door remained closed.

Margaret simply shrugged.

"He noticed you hadn't eaten."

Amelia frowned.

"He did?"

"He notices everything."

She looked at the sandwich for a long moment.

Maybe...

Maybe he wasn't as terrible as everyone said.

The thought had barely formed when his voice echoed from inside the office.

"Miss Hart."

She hurried in.

He handed her a document.

"There are twelve formatting errors."

She stared.

"...Already?"

"I counted thirteen."

"Oh."

"The thirteenth was intentional."

"...Right."

"I wanted to see if you'd notice."

She blinked.

"I didn't."

"I know."

He took the papers back.

"That's why you're here."

Any warmth she'd imagined from the sandwich vanished instantly.

As she left the office, she muttered under her breath,

"I take it back."

Margaret looked up.

"Hm?"

"He's still terrible."

Margaret smiled to herself.

"Yes."

"But today he bought you lunch."

Amelia froze.

"...He what?"

Margaret nodded toward the sandwich.

"He does that."

"For everyone?"

Margaret laughed softly.

"No."

Amelia looked toward Adrian's closed office door.

Then back at the untouched sandwich.

She couldn't understand him.

One moment, he made her feel like the least competent employee in the company.

The next, he quietly made sure she didn't skip lunch.

She had a feeling understanding Adrian Blackwood was going to be the hardest assignment of her career.
