Chapter 1: The Wrong Morning
The throbbing behind Elara’s eyes was the first thing that woke her. It was a vicious, rhythmic ache that made her want to bury her face back into the pillow. She blinked against a harsh wave of morning light, waiting for the familiar sight of her chipped bedroom door or the sound of the leaky pipe down the hall.
Instead, her hands brushed against silk. Genuine, heavy silk sheets.
Elara bolted upright, a sharp spike of adrenaline cutting right through the hangover. This wasn't her room. The ceiling was impossibly high, polished concrete, and an entire wall of glass looked out over a sprawling skyline she only ever saw from the ground.
Where am I?
She pulled the dark duvet up to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. The last thing she remembered was the charity masquerade gala. Serena had handed her a glass of champagne after a tense argument about a missing dress, and then... nothing. A total blank.
The click of a door handle shattered the silence.
Elara flinched, pulling the sheets tighter as the bathroom door swung open. A man stepped out, buttoning the cuffs of a crisp white shirt. He didn't look like someone who had just woken up. His dark hair was damp, his jaw tight, and his grey eyes looked completely cold as they landed on her.
Dorian Blackwood.
Elara froze. Everyone in the city knew who he was—the reclusive, cutthroat CEO her father had been desperate to partner with, the man Serena had spent the last six months trying to corner into an engagement.
Dorian stopped at the edge of the bed. He didn't look angry, exactly. He looked dangerous, like a predator trying to solve a puzzle.
"You're awake," he said. His voice was deep, lacking any of the warmth you'd expect from a morning-after. "Good. You want to tell me how you got past my security? Because I know for a fact I didn't bring Elara Quinn up here last night."
Elara’s throat was completely dry. "I—I don't know."
"You don't know." A faint, cynical smile touched his lips, but his eyes stayed sharp. "You just stumbled into a private elevator, bypassed a biometric lock, and ended up in my bed by accident?"
"I’m telling the truth!" Elara’s voice cracked. She scrambled backward until her back hit the headboard. "I don't remember anything after the gala. I don't even know how I got into a cab, let alone your penthouse. I swear, Dorian, I didn't—"
"Save it," he cut her off, turning toward a sleek dresser to pick up his watch. "I don't care what kind of game your father is playing, or if Serena sent you here to create some leverage, but you need to get dressed. Now. My driver will take you back before—"
A sudden, violent bang echoed from the foyer.
Dorian paused, his hand hovering over his watch. His brow furrowed.
"Dorian!" A woman's voice screamed from the hallway, muffled but distinct. "Dorian, open this door right now! I know she’s in there!"
Elara’s breath hitched. It was Serena.
"Oh my god," Elara whispered, the blood completely draining from her face. She looked around frantically, spotting her emerald gala dress crumpled on a chair across the room. "No, no, no. She can't see me here. She'll think—"
"Stay there," Dorian ordered, his tone shifting from cold to absolute steel. He turned toward the door, but before he could even take three steps, the heavy electronic lock on the penthouse entrance chimed.
The door swung wide open.
Serena burst through the entryway, her perfect makeup ruined by what looked like hysterical tears. But she wasn't alone. Half a dozen people swarmed in right behind her, carrying heavy professional cameras and digital recorders. The press.
"I didn't want to believe it!" Serena wailed, pointing a shaking, manicured finger past Dorian, straight at the bed. "My own sister! How could you do this to me, Elara?!"
Flash. Flash. Flash.
The blinding white light of a dozen cameras illuminated the bedroom. Elara threw her hands up to shield her face, but she was trapped against the headboard, completely exposed.
"Miss Quinn! Look over here!"
"Is it true you've been having a secret affair with your sister's potential fiancé?"
"Did the Quinn family plan this to force Mr. Blackwood's hand?"
The questions pelted her like stones. Dorian stepped in front of the cameras, his tall frame blocking the worst of the light as his voice boomed over the noise. "Get the hell out of my apartment. Delete the footage, or my legal team will ensure none of you ever work in this city again."
The security guards finally flooded the room, aggressively pushing the reporters back toward the elevator, but the damage was done. The flashes had stopped, but the images were already captured.
Through the chaos, Elara caught Serena’s eye.
Her sister was still sobbing, her shoulders shaking dynamically for the cameras. But as the press was forced out the door, Serena looked directly at Elara. The tears in her eyes didn't match the tight, victorious smirk pulling at the corner of her lips.
Elara lowered her hands, her heart dropping into her stomach.
This wasn't a misunderstanding. She hadn't stumbled into the wrong room. She had been perfectly, deliberately set up by her own family.
