Chapter 1
The Umbrella
Maya and Thabo had been together for 2 years. They weren’t perfect.
Thabo was loud, always late, and forgot birthdays. Maya was quiet, overthought everything, and planned her whole week on Sunday.
One rainy Thursday, Thabo showed up at Maya’s class with only one umbrella. He was soaked. “Why didn’t you take your own?” Maya asked, annoyed but smiling.
“You said you’d be late today. I thought you’d need it more,” he shrugged.
They walked home under that one umbrella, shoulders bumping, both getting a little wet on the sides.
On the way, Thabo tripped and dropped their chips. Maya burst out laughing. Thabo got mad for 2 seconds, then laughed too. When they got home, Maya made him tea because he was shivering. Thabo fixed her leaking tap that had been dripping for a week.
Not grand gestures every day. It’s choosing to share one umbrella when it’s raining. It’s laughing when things fall. It’s fixing each other’s small messes. It’s being a team, even when you’re different.
They still argue about what to watch and who’s late. But they always end up under the same umbrella.
