THE CHESSBOARD-CHAPTER 1

THE CHESSBOARD-Chapter 1

Part-1: The New Method of killing

"In chess, every move is planned. In murder... every victim is chosen.”

Breaking News: The city had witnessed seven murders in just thirty days.

No fingerprints, No witnesses, No motive. Only one clue, a black chess piece was placed beside every victim. First victim had Pawn, second victim had a knight, third had bishop etc. Media and public calls him “The Chessboard Killer”. Inspector Vikram wasn’t convinced that he is a serial killer as serial killer leaves signatures, but this kill is leaving instructions. On the back of every chess piece leaves a handwritten message “Next Move is yours.” Inspector Vikram was shocked after cracking the clues he left. The pieces all together form a chess game, and he is playing on black side. As the investigation progressed, every clue solved by the police only led to another murder as if someone already knew exactly what they would do next. Then came the eighth package, not to police station, to Inspector Vikram’s house. When he opened the package, he found a white pristine king and a note was below the piece which stated, “You’ve been playing this game from the very beginning...you just don’t remember it.” For the first time, the detective wasn’t chasing the killer. He was questioning himself whether he had been one of the pieces all along.

Part-2: The Mystery of A Luxury Hotel

“Every clue reveals the next move... never the player.”

Inspector Vikram called forensic experts and told them to examine the piece he received. After some time, forensic experts told “Sir, there is no fingerprints on the piece, no DNA. There is no trace of dust in that box. Sir, there is something else…. “When the officer gave the note, the note wasn’t written in ink rather it was written in an ink which can be seen only through Ultraviolet light. The letters were seen when they were kept under UV light. The note stated “White always moves first” Vikram froze as he never told anyone that he received a white king. Only three people knows – He, ACP, then killer. When he was trying to think about this, an emergency call arrived through his radio “A wealthy businessman had disappeared from Hotel White Park. All units please report to the location Over!” Vikram and his colleagues went to the Hotel White Park and saw the room was neat. There was no struggle, no disturbance, only a chessboard was there on the table. Pieces were arranged exactly in an unfinished game. Vikram saw this and identified that the moves were arranged in an unfinished game, exactly the famous one “The Immortal Zugzwang”. He also noticed that one square was empty and one white queen was missing. Vikram got to know “If queen was missing, then she was already on the move”. Vikram got an unknown message. The message stated, “Stop looking for the killer instead find the player”. Vikram told his colleagues to review inside and outside CCTV footage. To everyone’s surprise, they saw a hooded figure entering the hotel, but the same person didn’t leave the hotel. The investigators replayed the clip repeatedly until one officer whispered, “Sir...“”The reflection in the elevator mirror, it’s not the same person.” The room fell silent. Someone wasn’t hiding their face; someone was hiding their identity itself.

Part-3: The Investigation

“The most dangerous move... is the one you never realize you’ve made.”

The surveillance footage was replayed frame by frame. The hooded figure entered the hotel at exactly 8:17 PM and stepped into the elevator. Twenty-three seconds later, the elevator doors opened, revealing what appeared to be the same person. The height, clothes, and walk were identical, yet something felt disturbingly wrong. Detective Vikram zoomed in on the elevator mirror and noticed the reflection blinking a split second before the figure itself. The control room fell silent. One officer whispered, “That’s impossible.” But Vikram wasn’t convinced. “No,” he replied. “Someone wants us to believe it’s impossible.” Determined to uncover the truth, Vikram ordered every surveillance angle from the hotel to be analyzed. After six relentless hours, he discovered that every camera capturing the suspect had a precisely timed two-second delay. The impossible reflection wasn’t supernatural—it was a carefully engineered illusion. The killer hadn’t deceived the cameras; he had deceived everyone watching them. For the first time since the investigation began, Vikram smiled. “You’re not invisible,” he murmured. “You’re simply smarter than everyone else.” That moment of confidence didn’t last long. Arjun, Vikram colleague, rushed into the room with a disturbing report. “Sir... we’ve finished profiling all eight victims. They have absolutely nothing in common.” Different occupations, different ages, different cities, and no personal connections. Vikram walked toward the investigation board covered with the victims’ photographs. He stared at it in silence before instinctively stepping back. Suddenly, the arrangement made sense. The victims themselves formed the layout of a chessboard. Each represented a chess piece—the Pawn, the Knight, the Bishop, the Rook, and the Queen. Only one position remained empty “The King’s square.” Just then, Vikram’s phone vibrated. An unknown number had sent a message “Congratulations, Detective. You finally found the board.” Before he could react, another message appeared, “Now... find the King”. A chill ran down his spine. He slowly looked around the investigation room. Every officer was busy examining files, and no one had entered or left. Yet when his eyes returned to the evidence board, his heartbeat stopped. A Black King chess piece had been pinned to the center of the board. He was certain it hadn’t been there thirty seconds earlier, without breaking into the police station, the killer had just made his next move.

Part-4: The Wrong Move

“The board remembers every move... even the ones you forgot.”

The entire police station was immediately placed under lockdown. No officer was allowed to leave, and every entrance, exit, and surveillance feed was reviewed again. Detective Vikram knew one thing for certain—the Black King hadn’t appeared on the evidence board by magic. Someone had placed it there while every officer was distracted. “Search everyone,” Vikram ordered. Every officer, forensic expert, and staff member were questioned. Their phones were seized, fingerprints collected, and movements reconstructed minute by minute. Hours passed, but the investigation led nowhere. It was as if the killer had walked through the station without leaving behind a single trace. Just as frustration began to spread, Arjun noticed something unusual “Sir... the Black King.” Vikram turned toward the evidence board. “It’s facing the wrong direction.” Everyone looked closely, every chess piece recovered from previous crime scenes had been facing toward the victims’ photographs. Only the Black King was facing the wall behind the board. Vikram slowly removed the board from the wall, behind it, someone had drawn a faint grid using invisible ink. Under forensic light, the grid revealed itself to be a complete chessboard with tiny coordinates written inside each square. Only one square contained a handwritten message “E4”. “It’s not a clue; it’s the next move” Vikram whispered. Within seconds, the control room received an emergency call through his radio “A security guard at the city’s abandoned railway museum had discovered another black chess piece placed on an old exhibition table. There was no body. No sign of a struggle. Only a digital chess clock counting down from 15 minutes.” When Vikram and his team rushed to the museum, the building was eerily quiet. The clock continued to tick “04:32...

04:31...” Every room was searched; the timer was running to “00:15...

00:14...” Arjun suddenly realized something, “Sir... the clock isn’t counting down to a murder, it’s counting down to a move.” The timer struck zero, and there was a huge beep sound. At that exact moment, every light inside the museum went out, darkness swallowed the building. When the emergency lights flickered back on a few seconds later, the chess clock had stopped, The Black King was gone and instead in its place lay a single envelope addressed to Inspector Vikram. When he opened it, inside was a photograph, it showed Vikram as a young police trainee... standing beside a chessboard. Across the photograph, written in red ink, were the chilling words: “You lost this game once. This time... don’t make the same mistake.”

Part-5: The Suspects

“When every suspect wears a badge... whom do you trust?”

Vikram couldn’t take his eyes off the old photograph. It was unmistakably him—twenty years younger, standing beside a wooden chessboard with a smile he no longer remembered. Every other face in the photograph had been scratched out, leaving only Vikram untouched. On the back was a date: 17 October 2006. Sensing that the photograph was connected to the killer’s plan, Arjun searched through the police archives and eventually uncovered a sealed file hidden among classified records. The cover read “Operation Checkmate – Classified.” Strangely, the file contained only a single page; every other document had been removed. Written across the remaining page in bold black ink were the chilling words: “The game was never finished.” Vikram’s heart skipped a beat when he noticed his own signature at the bottom of the page. He had absolutely no memory of participating in any operation called Checkmate. Before anyone could process the discovery, the lights inside the records room flickered violently, and an emergency alarm echoed throughout the police station. Someone had accessed the high-security evidence vault. Vikram, Arjun, and a team of officers rushed toward the vault. The biometric scanner showed no unauthorized entry, and the heavy steel door was still locked from the outside. Yet when they opened it, something was terribly wrong. Nothing had been stolen except one evidence box—the one containing every chess piece collected from the previous crime scenes. The box lay open, completely empty. In its place rested a white envelope. Vikram carefully unfolded the letter and read the message aloud: “You keep searching for the killer... while the real game is happening inside your own department.” The room fell into complete silence. Every officer instinctively looked at one another with growing suspicion. For the first time since the investigation began, trust vanished from the room. Just then, Vikram’s phone vibrated. An unknown sender had shared a live video. The screen displayed a chessboard as a pair of black-gloved hands calmly placed each of the missing chess pieces back onto the board, one after another. The final piece was the Black King. The hand paused, then slowly pointed directly at the cameras —as though they were pointing at Vikram himself. The video suddenly ended, and a final message appeared on the screen: “Your next opponent isn’t outside the station... he’s standing beside you.”

Part-6: The Queen

“The Queen has returned... and she knows the King’s past.”

The message echoed in Vikram’s mind long after the phone screen went dark. “Your next opponent isn’t outside the station... he’s sEvery conversation felt rehearsed, every glance seemed calculated, and every silence carried the weight of betrayal. Vikram immediately ordered a complete lockdown of the police station. No one was allowed to leave. Every officer’s mobile phone, service standing beside you.” From that moment, every officer became a suspect. Weapons, access cards, and duty log were collected for investigation. If the killer truly had an accomplice inside the department, this was their only chance to expose them. Hours passed, but every lead ended in frustration. Every officer had a solid alibi, the CCTV footage matched the official timeline, and forensic reports revealed nothing unusual. It was as though the mysterious insider had never existed. Exhausted but determined, Vikram returned to the investigation board and studied the recovered chess pieces once again. Suddenly, something caught his attention. The White Queen was missing. Arjun immediately checked the evidence records, only to discover that a White Queen had never recovered from any crime scene. Vikram stared at the board before quietly saying, “It was never missing... the killer never left it behind.” The room fell silent as everyone realized the horrifying implication—the killer had intentionally kept one piece. At that very moment, every computer inside the police stations suddenly went black before displaying a single chess move in white letters: Qh5+. The cybercrime unit quickly confirmed that the command had not come from an external hacker but had originated from a computer inside the police network. Before anyone could trace its source, another message appeared beneath it: “You found the missing Queen. Now find the one who protects her.” Seconds later, the station’s backup generator unexpectedly failed, plunging the building into darkness for five long seconds. When the emergency lights finally flickered back on, every officer instinctively turned toward the investigation board. Standing beside the Black King was the White Queen. No one had entered the room. No one had been seen placing the piece. Yet it was there, as though the killer had made another move right before their eyes. Vikram slowly picked up the White Queen and examined its base. Engraved beneath it were three chilling words: “WELCOME BACK, VIKRAM.”

Part-7: The Operation Checkmate

“Some games begin with the first move... this one began with a forgotten memory.”

The words engraved beneath the White Queen—“WELCOME BACK, VIKRAM.”—refused to leave Vikram’s mind. He couldn’t understand how the killer knew about a past that even he couldn’t remember. Determined to uncover the truth, he ordered Arjun to retrieve every archived document related to Operation Checkmate, including files that had been classified for decades. After hours of searching, Arjun discovered something impossible. The classified archives had been accessed just three days before the first murder, using the credentials of a senior police officer who had officially retired five years earlier. When Vikram contacted the officer’s family, the shocking truth emerged—the officer had died nearly eight months ago. Before the team could make sense of the mystery, an emergency call came in reporting a body inside an abandoned city library. Vikram and his team rushed to the scene, expecting to find another chess piece beside the victim. Instead, they found an old wooden chessboard placed neatly on a reading table. Every piece was arranged perfectly except for one empty square where the White Queen should have stood. Resting in its place was a small cassette tape labeled “Play Me.” After confirming it was safe, the forensic team played the recording. A distorted voice echoed through the silent library: “Detective Vikram... you’re asking the wrong question. Don’t ask who I am. Ask why you forgot me.” The recording ended with the steady ticking of a chess clock before one final sentence filled the room: “Checkmate isn’t the end of the game... it’s the beginning of your memory.” The tape clicked to a stop, and at that exact moment Arjun’s phone vibrated with an anonymous message. It contained nothing except an address and a chilling instruction: “Come alone if you want your first memory back.” Vikram stared at the address in disbelief. It was unmistakable. It led to the orphanage where he had spent his childhood. For the first time since the investigation began, Vikram realized the killer wasn’t guiding him toward another crime scene. He was guiding him back to the place where the game had truly begun.

Part-8: The First Memory

“The most dangerous enemy isn’t the one hunting you... it’s the one you’ve forgotten.”

Ignoring the warnings of his team, Vikram drove alone to the abandoned orphanage where he had spent the first twelve years of his life. The building stood frozen in time, its walls cracked, its corridors silent, and its rooms covered in layers of dust. Yet one room appeared untouched. At its center sat a wooden chessboard with every piece perfectly arranged, as though someone had been waiting for him. Beside the board lay an old diary addressed simply to “V.” As Vikram opened it, he discovered page after page describing incidents from his childhood—events so personal that no police record could have contained them. One entry caught his attention: “You always sacrificed the Queen to protect the King. That was your biggest mistake.” His hands trembled. He had never told anyone he used that exact strategy whenever he played chess as a child. Suddenly, a hidden projector flickered to life, illuminating the wall with an old photograph of six orphaned children gathered around the same chessboard. One child’s face had been scratched out completely. Beneath the photograph, a sentence slowly appeared: “One of us was forgotten... but never forgiven.” Before Vikram could react, his phone rang. It was Arjun. His voice was filled with panic. “Sir... come back immediately. Someone has broken into the evidence room again.” Vikram rushed back to the station, only to find every case file spread across the investigation room floor. At the center of the chaos lay a single photograph taken from the orphanage. This time, the scratched-out face had been restored. Vikram stared at it in disbelief. The child standing beside him looked hauntingly familiar. He wasn’t a stranger. He wasn’t another victim. He was someone Vikram had once called his best friend. Yet no matter how hard he tried... he couldn’t remember his name.

Part-9: The Photograph

“Every forgotten promise becomes tomorrow’s deadliest move.”

The photograph slipped from Vikram’s trembling hands, but his eyes remained fixed on the smiling boy standing beside him. Every instinct told him he knew that face, yet his memory refused to reveal the truth. Arjun quietly picked up the photograph and noticed something unusual. Written on the back, in faded blue ink, was a sentence: “A promise made on the final game.” Along with it was a date that matched the day the orphanage had mysteriously shut down forever. Vikram immediately ordered a complete search of the abandoned building once again. Hidden beneath the floorboards of the old recreation room, the forensic team uncovered a rusted metal box sealed with a tiny brass lock shaped like a chess knight. Inside were six children’s name tags, five faded photographs, and a handwritten notebook. One page had been violently torn out. The remaining pages described a secret chess club formed by six orphaned children who believed every game represented a lesson about trust, sacrifice, and survival. On the final page, only one sentence remained: “The loser disappears... and the winner must never speak about that night.” Vikram’s heartbeat quickened. Before anyone could investigate further, the station received another anonymous message. This time, it wasn’t a threat—it was a live video. The camera showed a gloved hand placing six old name tags onto a chessboard, one beside each piece. Five names were clearly visible. The sixth tag had been burned until only a single letter remained. “A.” The hand slowly picked up the charred tag and held it close to the camera before a distorted voice whispered, “You remember the game... now remember the promise.” The screen instantly went black. Seconds later, Vikram’s phone vibrated with a final message containing just four chilling words:

“The tenth move awaits.”

Part-10: The Tenth Move

“The board has revealed its players... but the true mastermind has yet to make the final move.”

The message “The tenth move awaits.” haunted Vikram throughout the night. Before sunrise, he returned to the investigation room and spread every piece of evidence across the table—the crime scene photographs, the orphanage diary, the recovered chess pieces, the classified files, and the burnt name tag. This time, instead of treating them as separate clues, he arranged them like moves on a chessboard. Suddenly, everything fit together. Every murder, every anonymous message, every missing chess piece, and every crime scene followed the exact sequence of a single historic chess match. The victims had never been chosen randomly; each one represented a move in a game that had begun years ago. Just then, Arjun rushed in with the latest forensic report. Using advanced chemical restoration, the lab had recovered the full name hidden beneath the burnt name tag. Vikram stared at the report as his hands began to tremble “AARAV”. The name unlocked fragments of memories he had buried for years. He remembered a young boy sitting opposite him at the orphanage, two best friends playing endless games of chess, a promise they had sworn never to break, and a stormy night that changed everything. But before the memories could fully return, they stopped, leaving only one terrifying question “What really happened to Aarav?” At that very moment, every television, computer monitor, and digital display inside the police station switched on simultaneously. A live broadcast appeared. A hooded figure sat alone in a dimly lit room with a chessboard placed between two empty chairs. Without saying a word, the figure calmly moved the Black King one square forward before speaking in a distorted voice. “You’ve remembered the player, but you’ve forgotten the final move.” The figure slowly placed an old pocket watch beside the board. The hooded figure’s voice echoed through the investigation room. “Twenty-four hours, Detective. Come alone. Finish the game you abandoned.” The broadcast ended, and an eerie silence settled over the room. No one spoke. No one moved. Seconds later, Vikram’s phone vibrated one last time. It wasn’t another threat or another clue—it was a live video. The screen showed a man sitting in a dimly lit room with a chessboard resting on the table before him. As the camera slowly moved closer, the man calmly reached forward and made one final move. The screen showed a man sitting in a dimly lit room with a chessboard resting on the table before him. As the camera slowly moved closer, the man calmly reached forward and made one final move. Check. Then he lifted his head. Vikram’s blood ran cold. The face staring back at him was his own. The man smiled—not with the satisfaction of victory, but with the unsettling familiarity of someone who had been waiting for this moment. In Vikram’s exact voice, he whispered, “I’ve been waiting for you to remember.” The video froze. A second later, a notification appeared on Vikram’s phone: LIVE LOCATION SHARED. Sender: VIKRAM. The entire investigation room erupted in confusion. Arjun instinctively turned toward Vikram, who was still standing beside him. If Vikram was here... then whose phone had just shared that location? Before anyone could react, the screen suddenly went black.
