Ch 1 Coming Home
The black SUV glided silently along the winding mountain roads, its tires humming against the pavement as towering pines stretched endlessly toward the sky.
Gray clouds drifted lazily overhead, casting soft shadows across the forest.
It was a beautiful day.
Neither of them noticed.
Inside the vehicle...
Silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind that settled between two people carrying wounds too deep for words.
Ronan sat beside the window, one arm resting against the door as he stared blankly at the passing trees.
The fresh mating mark on the side of his neck still burned faintly beneath the collar of his shirt.
Every pulse reminded him of the vows spoken only yesterday.
Every heartbeat reminded him of the cost.
Across from him, Tina sat quietly with both hands folded protectively over the gentle swell of her stomach.
It wasn't visible to anyone else yet.
But to her...
It felt like the entire world could see it.
She lowered her eyes.
The matching mark on her neck stung every time she moved.
She reached up without thinking, brushing trembling fingertips across it before quickly pulling her hand away.
Her throat tightened.
Neither of them had spoken since leaving the Gathering.
The silence wasn't awkward anymore.
It was simply...
Heavy.
Ronan finally shifted his gaze toward her.
She looked exhausted.
Dark circles rested beneath her eyes, and she hadn't stopped staring out the window for nearly an hour.
He understood.
He probably looked the same.
After a long moment, he quietly broke the silence.
Ronan: "How are you feeling?"
Tina didn't answer immediately.
She kept watching the endless forest roll past.
Finally...
She spoke so softly he almost didn't hear her.
"I'm... okay."
Ronan offered the smallest smile.
Ronan: "You're a terrible liar."
A weak laugh escaped her before fading just as quickly.
"I know."
Silence settled between them once more.
The driver respectfully kept his eyes on the road, pretending not to hear.
Neither Ronan nor Tina noticed.
Both were lost in thoughts they wished they could escape.
After several long minutes...
Tina finally spoke again.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I keep seeing her face."
Ronan already knew who she meant.
Lura.
He closed his eyes for a brief moment.
"So do I."
Tina swallowed hard.
"I never wanted..."
Her words caught in her throat.
"I tried to stop it."
Tears burned her eyes.
"I told my mom I couldn't do it."
"I told her it was wrong."
Her breathing became uneven.
"But she kept saying..."
"'If you walk away now, you'll lose everything.'"
Ronan listened quietly.
He didn't interrupt.
He didn't judge.
He simply listened.
Tina wiped at her eyes before the tears could fall.
"I thought..."
"I thought I was protecting my future."
A painful laugh escaped her.
"But all I did..."
"...was destroy everyone else's."
The vehicle became silent again.
Ronan looked down at his own hands.
For the first time...
He answered honestly.
Ronan: "I ask myself every hour..."
"...what I could've done differently."
He drew a slow breath.
"I couldn't save Kael."
His voice cracked.
"I couldn't save Lura."
His fists slowly tightened.
"And now..."
"...I don't know how to save us."
Those words hung heavily between them.
Tina slowly turned toward him for the first time since leaving the island.
She didn't see the confident Alpha heir everyone admired.
She saw a young man barely holding himself together.
Just like she was.
Without thinking...
She quietly reached across the seat.
Her hand rested gently over his clenched fist.
Not out of romance.
Not because everything was suddenly okay.
But because, in that moment...
Neither of them wanted to carry the weight alone.
Ronan looked down at her hand.
Then slowly relaxed his own.
Outside...
The mountains grew taller.
The familiar scent of pine drifted through the slightly opened window.
The driver smiled softly as the massive stone walls of Cravenwood Pack finally appeared in the distance.
Driver: "We're almost home, Alpha Ronan."
Ronan looked through the windshield.
Home.
The word no longer brought comfort.
Beside him, Tina's stomach tightened with fear.
She had never been to Cravenwood Pack.
She had never met Ronan's parents.
She didn't know whether they would welcome her...
Or wish she had never come.
Instinctively, her hand returned to her stomach.
Barely audible...
She whispered to the tiny life growing inside her.
"We're here, little one."
"I hope..."
"...they'll love you."
The towering iron gates of Cravenwood Pack slowly came into view.
Neither of them noticed the silver banners fluttering beyond the walls...
Or the celebration waiting on the other side.
The massive iron gates slowly parted.
Beyond them...
Cravenwood Pack came to life.
The SUV rolled onto a wide stone road lined with towering pine trees, their branches swaying gently beneath the afternoon breeze.
Tina pressed her forehead lightly against the window.
Her breath caught.
"It's beautiful..."
The words escaped before she realized she'd spoken them.
Cravenwood wasn't just a pack.
It was home.
Children laughed as they chased one another through the village square.
Merchants smiled from open market stalls.
The smell of fresh bread drifted from a nearby bakery while the rich aroma of roasting meat filled the air.
Pack members walked through the streets greeting one another like family.
No fear.
No shouting.
Only warmth.
Tina had never seen anything like it.
Her eyes wandered farther.
Silver ribbons hung from every lantern.
Fresh white lilies decorated the streets.
Moonflowers wrapped around the fences surrounding the Alpha House.
Beautiful white banners embroidered with silver crescent moons fluttered proudly in the breeze.
Every home seemed decorated.
Every face seemed excited.
Her smile slowly faded.
"This..."
She swallowed.
"This isn't normal, is it?"
Ronan stared silently out his own window.
"No."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"My mother..."
"...she planned all of this."
Tina slowly looked toward him.
"For... us?"
He closed his eyes.
"No."
The single word struck harder than she expected.
He took a slow breath before continuing.
"She believed..."
"...I was bringing Lura home."
Silence filled the vehicle.
Tina looked back out the window.
The decorations suddenly looked different.
Every flower.
Every ribbon.
Every smiling face.
None of it had been meant for her.
One of the banners hanging across the road read...
Welcome Home Future Luna.
Tina's heart sank.
She looked down at her hands.
Her fingers trembled.
"So..."
She whispered.
"They don't even know."
Ronan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"They think..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
He didn't have to.
Tina already understood.
She rested one protective hand over her stomach.
Her baby shifted ever so slightly.
A tiny flutter.
Almost as though sensing her fear.
She smiled sadly.
"I don't belong here."
Ronan turned toward her immediately.
His expression was firm.
Ronan: "Don't say that."
She gave a hollow laugh.
"How can I not?"
She pointed toward the passing decorations.
"They weren't waiting for me."
"They were waiting for her."
Outside...
Pack members began waving excitedly as the SUV drove through the village.
Several children ran alongside the road laughing.
One little girl held a bouquet of fresh moon lilies nearly as large as she was.
She smiled brightly at the vehicle.
"Alpha Ronan's home!"
More wolves appeared from nearby homes.
They waved happily.
Some even applauded.
Tina couldn't look anymore.
She lowered her eyes to her lap.
"They're going to hate me."
Ronan remained quiet for several moments.
Finally...
He answered honestly.
Ronan: "Some probably will."
Tina nodded.
"I deserve that."
Ronan looked at her.
"No."
"You deserve the chance to prove who you become."
His voice remained calm.
"What happened at the Gathering..."
"...will always be part of our story."
"But it doesn't have to be the end of it."
Tina looked at him for a long moment.
She wanted to believe him.
She truly did.
The SUV rounded the final bend.
The Alpha House stood proudly at the top of a gentle hill.
Its stone walls shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.
The front staircase had been covered in fresh flowers.
Silver ribbons wrapped around every pillar.
Even the balcony overlooking the courtyard had been decorated.
Pack members filled the grounds below.
Smiling.
Laughing.
Waiting.
At the top of the staircase stood Alpha River.
Tall.
Proud.
Strong.
Beside him...
Luna Zoey adjusted one final bouquet of moon lilies before stepping back with a satisfied smile.
Her silver eyes searched the approaching vehicle.
Hope filled her heart.
She quietly clasped her hands together.
Luna Zoey: "He's home..."
She smiled warmly toward River.
"I can't wait to finally see Lura."
River slipped an arm around his mate's shoulders.
Alpha River: "If Ronan speaks half as highly of her as he has these past weeks..."
"...she must be extraordinary."
Zoey laughed softly.
"I already love her."
Neither of them noticed...
The tears quietly slipping down Tina's cheeks inside the SUV.
The vehicle slowed.
Then...
Came to a stop.
The engine went quiet.
For a long moment...
No one moved.
Outside, the courtyard buzzed with excitement.
Pack members smiled as they gathered before the Alpha House, eager to welcome their future Alpha home.
White moon lilies decorated the stone steps.
Silver ribbons danced in the gentle mountain breeze.
Children stood on their tiptoes, trying to see through the SUV windows.
Luna Zoey smiled brightly as she smoothed the front of her dress for what felt like the hundredth time.
She looked toward Alpha River with nervous excitement.
Luna Zoey: "Do I look alright?"
River chuckled warmly.
Alpha River: "You look beautiful."
"You've only asked me six times."
Zoey laughed softly.
Luna Zoey: "I know."
"I just want Lura to feel welcome."
River slipped an arm around her shoulders.
Alpha River: "If she's half the young woman Ronan described..."
"...she'll already know she's welcome."
Zoey smiled.
"I can't wait to hug her."
Just then...
Tiny footsteps echoed across the front porch.
A little girl with silver-gray hair came bursting through the front doors.
She looked almost exactly like Ronan.
The same silver eyes.
The same mischievous smile.
Only much smaller.
Lily: "RONAN!"
Before anyone could stop her...
She flew down the steps.
Luna Zoey: "Lily!"
"Slow down!"
Lily ignored her mother completely.
She launched herself at Ronan the moment he stepped out of the SUV.
Ronan caught her with practiced ease.
For the first time since leaving the Gathering...
He smiled.
A real smile.
He hugged her tightly.
Ronan: "Hey, Little Wolf."
Lily giggled.
"I missed you!"
"I practiced shifting while you were gone!"
"And Daddy says my howl is getting louder!"
Ronan laughed quietly.
"I believe it."
She wrapped her little arms around his neck one last time before pulling back.
Her silver eyes sparkled with excitement.
Lily: "Where's Miss Lura?"
Everything stopped.
The smile faded from Ronan's face.
Lily blinked.
She looked around him.
Then behind the SUV.
Still smiling.
Still searching.
Lily: "Did she hide?"
Ronan slowly lowered her to the ground.
He knelt until they were eye level.
His voice was gentle.
Ronan: "No, little monkey."
Lily frowned.
Her little eyes wandered across the courtyard.
Then...
She noticed Tina standing quietly beside the vehicle.
One hand rested protectively over her stomach.
Fresh mating marks still marked both her neck and Ronan's.
Lily looked back at her brother.
Her little face filled with confusion.
Lily: "That's not Miss Lura."
Ronan closed his eyes for a brief second.
"No..."
"It isn't."
Lily tilted her head.
"Did Miss Lura go home?"
The question pierced every heart in the courtyard.
Zoey quietly covered her mouth.
River's shoulders became heavy.
Pack members slowly stopped smiling as they began noticing the matching marks between Ronan and Tina.
The whispers began.
Very quietly.
Tina heard every single one.
She lowered her eyes.
Her fingers instinctively curled over her stomach.
She wished the ground would swallow her whole.
Lily looked back at Ronan.
Lily: "What happened?"
Ronan gently brushed a strand of silver hair away from her face.
His voice almost broke.
Ronan: "Something very sad happened."
"I'll tell you when you're older."
Lily looked at him for a long moment.
Then nodded.
She trusted her big brother.
If he wasn't ready to talk...
She wouldn't ask again.
Instead...
She quietly walked over to Tina.
Tina looked completely frozen.
She had prepared herself for angry wolves.
Cold stares.
Rejection.
She wasn't prepared...
For a little girl.
Lily looked up at her with wide silver eyes.
Then her attention shifted to Tina's stomach.
Her eyes grew huge.
Lily: "There's a baby in there?"
Tina hesitated before answering.
"...Yes."
Lily smiled.
A genuine, innocent smile.
"I've never met a baby before."
She looked up at Tina.
Lily: "Can I say hi?"
Tina's eyes filled with tears.
She looked toward Ronan.
He simply gave her the smallest nod.
Slowly...
She nodded back.
"You can."
Lily carefully placed one tiny hand against Tina's stomach as though she were touching something precious.
She smiled brightly.
Lily: "Hi, baby."
"My name's Lily."
"I'm your Auntie."
"I'll teach you how to climb trees."
A few quiet chuckles escaped from nearby pack members despite the heavy atmosphere.
Lily looked back at Ronan.
Lily: "Can the baby hear me?"
Ronan smiled softly.
"Maybe."
Lily beamed.
"Then..."
She leaned closer to Tina's stomach.
Lily: "Don't worry."
"You already have a family."
Tina couldn't stop the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
Those simple words...
Spoken by a seven-year-old little girl...
Were the first time she'd felt even the smallest spark of hope since the Gathering.
Zoey watched the scene unfold.
Her heart broke.
Not only for Lura...
Not only for her son...
But now...
For the frightened young woman standing before her, carrying a child who had done nothing wrong.
She slowly walked toward Tina.
Tina stiffened.
Expecting rejection.
Instead...
Zoey gently wrapped her arms around her.
Tina froze.
Luna Zoey: "Oh, sweetheart..."
Her own tears slipped free.
"My heart breaks for you..."
She looked toward Ronan.
"...for my son..."
Then her gaze drifted toward the empty road leading back to the Gathering.
Her voice cracked.
Luna Zoey: "...and for Lura."
She gently rested one hand over Tina's where it covered the unborn pup.
Luna Zoey: "None of you deserved this."
Silence settled over Cravenwood Pack.
Not because there was nothing left to say...
But because everyone understood.
The celebration they had prepared for had ended before it began.
And in its place...
A different journey had arrived.
One filled with grief...
Healing...
And the weight they would all learn to carry together.
