Chapter 1

The brass key slipped from Ethan’s trembling fingers, clattering against the linoleum floor with a sharp, echoing clack. His heart hammered a violent, erratic rhythm against his ribs as he bent down to scoop it up, his twenty-year-old hands shaking so badly he could barely fit the key back into the deadbolt.

The apartment was too quiet. That was the first thing that registered. Usually, Chris was blasting some obscure indie record, or Jamie was sprawled across the sofa complaining about his shifts at the gallery. Instead, there was only a low, rhythmic friction. A muffled, wet sound that made the hair on the back of Ethan’s neck stand straight up.

He pushed the door open, the hinges squeaking softly in protest.

“Chris?” Ethan called out, his voice cracking slightly, thin and high-pitched in the heavy air. “Jamie? I forgot my wallet...”

He stepped into the hallway, kicking off his scuffed sneakers, and drifted toward the master bedroom. The door stood half-open, a sliver of warm, dim light spilling across the dark hardwood floor. The air grew thick, heavy with the unmistakable, metallic musk of sweat and sex.

Ethan pushed the door all the way open, and the breath was violently sucked from his lungs.

There, tangled in the gray linen sheets that Ethan had bought for their anniversary, were the two people he trusted most in the world. Chris—twenty-eight, with messy black hair slicked with sweat and striking grey eyes half-lidded in pure, unadulterated ecstasy—was driving his hips downward with a vicious, rhythmic intensity. Beneath him, arching his back and clawing at the headboard, was Jamie.

Jamie’s face was smeared with tears and pleasure, his mouth thrown open in a loud, wet moan that tore right through Ethan’s chest.

“F-fuck, Chris, right there—don’t stop, please—” Jamie choked out, his voice hitching as Chris slammed into him again, a brutal, driving thrust that made the wooden bedframe slam against the wall with a deafening thud.

Ethan stood frozen in the doorway, his blonde hair falling into his wide, shock-widened blue eyes. He couldn’t move. His limbs felt like they had been poured full of lead.

“God, Jamie, you’re so tight,” Chris groaned, his voice rough and gravelly, sounding like a stranger’s. He threw his head back, his muscles corded and glistening in the dim bedroom light, riding out a fast, punishing wave of friction until his body seized. With a final, ragged shout, Chris buried himself deep inside Jamie, shooting his hot seed straight into Jamie’s hole.

A thick, pearlescent string of cum immediately began to leak out of Jamie’s gaping asshole, dripping sluggishly down his inner thigh as he convulsed beneath Chris’s weight, gasping and shivering.

For a long, agonizing second, nobody moved.

Then, Chris slowly lifted his head. His grey eyes, usually so warm when they looked at Ethan across the breakfast table, locked onto the doorway. There was no panic in them. No immediate, desperate scramble for a sheet. Just a cold, flat calculation.

“Ethan,” Chris said, his voice entirely devoid of remorse as he pulled himself out of Jamie. A wet, slurping sound filled the silence, and more of Chris’s cum spilled from Jamie’s trembling body onto the sheets.

Ethan’s stomach heaved. He clamped a hand over his mouth, tasting bile at the back of his throat.

“You...” Ethan finally managed to choke out, his voice a pathetic, trembling whisper. “You’re... on our bed. My bed.”

Jamie pulled the sheet up to his chest, his face flushing crimson, though there was a sick, satisfied smirk lurking at the corners of his trembling lips. “Ethan, look, it’s not—it just happened, okay? You’re always working, you’re always so... distant—”

“Shut up, Jamie,” Ethan hissed, the sheer betrayal burning through his shock like acid. He pointed a shaking finger at the man he had called his best friend for four years. “You were in my kitchen yesterday eating my takeout. You were hugging me. And you’re—you’re dripping in his cum on the sheets I washed on Sunday.”

Chris rolled off the bed with a heavy sigh, completely naked. He walked over to the closet, grabbed a pair of sweatpants, and pulled them on without a hint of shame. His grey eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at Ethan, as if Ethan were the one inconveniencing him.

“Don’t make a big scene out of this, Eth,” Chris said, running a hand through his damp black hair. “We’ve been drifting for months. You know it, I know it.”

“Drifting?” Ethan’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes, hot and fast down his cheeks. “We talked about moving to the coast next year! You said you loved me on Friday!”

“People say things,” Chris muttered coldly, walking over to the dresser and grabbing his wallet and keys. “I’m leaving. I’ll take my clothes later. But I’m clearing out.”

“Good,” Ethan spat, though his entire body was shaking so violently he could barely stand upright. “Get out. Both of you. Get out of my apartment right now.”

Jamie scrambled off the bed, hastily pulling on his jeans and sweatshirt, refusing to meet Ethan’s eyes as he brushed past him in the doorway. “I’m sorry, Ethan. Really.”

“Don’t touch me,” Ethan snapped, pressing himself flat against the hallway wall to avoid brushing against Jamie’s jacket.

Jamie didn’t say another word. He bolted out the front door, the latch clicking shut behind him with a sharp, final sound.

Chris lingered by the living room, grabbing his leather jacket from the coat rack. He paused, looking back toward the kitchen, and then sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck.

“What?” Ethan shouted, tears streaming down his face as he clutched his chest. “What else could you possibly want to take? My dignity? You already got that!”

“Leo,” Chris said flatly.

Ethan froze. He looked toward the corner of the living room, where a massive, stocky white Great Pyrenees mix was lying on a dog bed, watching them with heavy, melancholy brown eyes.

Leo was huge—standing nearly as tall as Ethan’s waist on all fours, with a broad chest, a thick, snowy coat, and paws the size of dinner plates. Chris had rescued him from a shelter two years ago, but ever since Leo had nipped at Ethan’s hand during their second week together, Ethan had been utterly terrified of the beast. The dog was too big, too unpredictable, and possessed a low, vibrating growl that made Ethan’s blood run cold whenever Leo got too close.

“I can’t take him to the motel I’m staying at,” Chris continued, shrugging into his jacket. “It’s too small. No pets allowed. He’s your problem now.”

“My problem?” Ethan’s voice rose an octave, sheer panic cutting through his heartbreak. “Chris, no! You know I can’t handle him! He hates me! He’s massive, he’s basically a polar bear, and he bit me last year—”

“He didn’t bite you, he nipped because you stepped on his tail,” Chris snapped back, losing his patience. “Just feed him twice a day, walk him morning and night, and stop being so dramatic about everything.”

“Chris, wait—”

The front door swung open, and with a sharp, echoing slam, Chris was gone.

The apartment plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Ethan stood in the middle of the hallway, chest heaving, tears dripping off his chin. The air still smelled faintly of sex, sweat, and cheap laundry detergent. His boyfriend of three years had just fucked his best friend on their bed, and now he was completely, utterly alone.

Slowly, terrifyingly, a heavy rustling sound broke the quiet.

Ethan stiffened, his blue eyes darting toward the living room corner.

Leo was standing up.

The massive white dog stretched his front legs out, letting out a long, rumbling yawn that showed off a cavernous pink mouth and rows of sharp teeth. Then, shaking his thick coat out with a loud thump of fur against the floorboards, Leo turned his heavy head and fixed his dark, intelligent eyes directly on Ethan.

Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat. He pressed his back flat against the wall, his fingers digging into the plaster.

“Stay,” Ethan whispered, his voice trembling violently. “Stay back, Leo. Good boy. Just... stay.”

Leo didn’t listen. The big dog took a slow, deliberate step forward, his massive paws padding silently across the floor. He crossed the living room, heading straight down the narrow hallway toward where Ethan was plastered against the wall.

Ethan’s heart slammed against his ribs like a trapped bird. He wanted to run to his bedroom, but the bedroom meant the bed—meant the memory of Chris and Jamie tangled in the sheets. He was trapped.

Leo stopped just a foot away from Ethan. Up close, the dog was towering, his white chest broad and powerful, radiating a distinct, heavy body heat. Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, bracing himself for a snarl, for the sharp snap of jaws, for the pain of a bite that would cap off the worst day of his entire life.

Instead, a wet, warm nose gently nudged against Ethan’s bare wrist, right where his pulse was racing like mad.

Ethan opened one eye, trembling.

Leo tilted his massive head, his long pink tongue slipping out to give Ethan’s hand a tentative, clumsy lick. Then, with a soft, mournful sigh that sounded heartbreakingly human, the giant dog pressed his heavy white shoulder directly against Ethan’s shins, anchoring himself there in the empty, silent hallway.
