Chapter 1
Blinking against the harsh light, Seph sat up groggily on a park bench. His head throbbed with a dull ache, as if he had been hit by a freight train. The world around him spun for a moment before slowly coming into focus. He noticed his surroundings—a serene park with tall trees swaying gently in the breeze. The air carried the scent of freshly cut grass and distant flowers. His fingers brushed against the cool metal of the bench beneath him, grounding him in this unfamiliar place.
Seph dragged a hand through his midnight blue hair, the white streaks catching the afternoon light as something spilled. The park offered him a dog walker, a stroller, a man asleep under a newspaper—nothing with gills or a tail or a single glowing eye. He reached behind himself with both hands, patting down his shoulder blades the way you’d search an empty pocket, finding only the flat of his own back, the fabric of his shirt unbroken where the roots of his wings had been.
A small earthen hand pushed up through the soil beside the bench, knuckles dirty, and raised its middle finger at him. “At least that works,” he grumbled. Closing his eyes, his entire head was black, nothing that indicated roommates. He let out a yawn and rose to his feet.
