Chapter 1: The Heir They Betrayed
Rhydian Kingsley was only four years old when his entire understanding of family changed forever.
His mother died when he was still far too young to understand what death truly meant. He could remember fragments of her rather than complete memories: the softness of her voice, the warmth of her embrace, the way she would sit beside him and watch him play, and perhaps the faint scent of her perfume that remained on pieces of clothing long after she was gone. To Rhydian, she had simply disappeared from the house one day, and although the adults around him attempted to explain that she would never return, the meaning of those words could never truly settle inside the mind of a four-year-old child.
Xander Kingsley, Rhydian's father, mourned his wife for some time, but eventually he brought another woman into the Kingsley household. Her name was Ariella, and she did not enter the family as a temporary companion. She became Xander's wife, and with her arrival came a new chapter in the Kingsley household that would quietly change Rhydian's life.
Ariella gave birth to Leander Kingsley, her first son with Xander, several years after their marriage. At first, Rhydian tried to accept the new family that was forming around him. He was still a child, and although he missed his mother terribly, he wanted to believe that his father would remain his father regardless of who entered their lives. He had once been extremely close to Xander, and there had been a time when Rhydian believed that nothing could ever come between them.
But the relationship between father and son gradually began to change.
Ariella would eventually have two daughters with Xander, Mireya and Novalie, giving the family three children from her marriage to the Kingsley patriarch. Within eight years, Ariella had established herself firmly within the household, and the family that had once revolved around Rhydian slowly began to revolve around her children.
Rhydian noticed the difference long before anyone acknowledged it.
He noticed that his father's attention was increasingly directed toward Leander, Mireya, and Novalie. He noticed the subtle changes in conversations whenever he entered a room. He noticed that certain privileges were given to Ariella's children while he was expected to understand why he was excluded. He noticed the way Ariella could speak about him without openly insulting him, yet somehow make everyone understand that she considered him separate from the family she had created.
The cruelty was not always loud.
That was what made it worse.
There were no constant arguments, no dramatic confrontations in the middle of the Kingsley Manor, and no moment when Xander openly announced that he no longer cared about his first son. Instead, the treatment came in small pieces, repeated so frequently that Rhydian eventually learned to expect it.
And Xander never questioned it.
That hurt Rhydian more than Ariella's behavior ever could.
His father was the person who should have protected him. Xander knew that Rhydian had lost his mother when he was only four years old, yet instead of becoming the one person who would make sure his son never felt alone, he slowly allowed another family to form around him while Rhydian stood outside of it.
Rhydian never complained.
He never demanded an explanation.
He never stood before his father and asked why he was being treated differently from Leander, Mireya, and Novalie. He simply endured everything silently, convincing himself that perhaps silence was better than allowing the family to fracture completely.
As the years passed, that silence became part of his character.
Rhydian grew into a young man who did not easily reveal his pain. He became disciplined, intelligent, ambitious, and extraordinarily self-controlled. While Ariella's children grew up surrounded by the warmth of their mother's attention and their father's increasing affection, Rhydian concentrated on his education and his future.
Eventually, he graduated from university.
By then, he had developed into a man who no longer needed anyone's approval to know his own worth. He had survived years of emotional neglect without allowing it to destroy his ambitions, and although he remained a member of the Kingsley family, there was already a distance between Rhydian and the people who were supposed to be closest to him.
Then came the day that changed everything. The patriarch of the Kingsley family, Evander Kingsley, summoned the entire family to Kingsley Manor.
Evander's words carried enormous weight within the family. He was not merely an elderly relative who occupied a ceremonial position. He was the patriarch, the man whose authority had shaped the Kingsley family for decades, and his decisions regarding the family's future were rarely questioned.
Everyone gathered at the manor, including Xander, Ariella, Leander, Mireya, Novalie, and Rhydian. Nobody expected the announcement that was about to be made. Evander informed the family that Rhydian Kingsley would become the next heir of the Kingsley family.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Rhydian himself did not immediately react. He had never expected such an announcement, particularly after spending most of his life feeling as though his position within the family had been quietly diminished. Yet Evander had made his decision, and there was no uncertainty in his voice.
Rhydian was to inherit the family's position, influence, and legacy.
Ariella was furious.
She did not dare challenge Evander openly because she knew exactly what that would mean. Evander's authority within the Kingsley family was too powerful for her to confront him directly, and she understood that openly opposing his decision would only make him more determined to place Rhydian above her children.
So Ariella remained silent during the meeting.
She waited when the meeting was finally dissolved and everyone began leaving the room, Ariella found Leander and instructed him to meet her in the gardens. The moment they were alone, the restraint disappeared.
Ariella told Leander that she would never accept Rhydian becoming the heir. In her eyes, her own son had spent his entire life growing within the Kingsley family, while Rhydian was the son of Xander's deceased first wife. She could not understand why Evander would choose Rhydian over Leander.
Leander understood exactly what his mother wanted. He wanted the position too. The difference between them was that Leander had grown up believing the Kingsley legacy should naturally belong to him. Rhydian, meanwhile, had never asked for it.
They first considered whether Evander could somehow be persuaded to change his mind, but they quickly realized that was impossible. Evander had not made his decision impulsively. He knew every member of the family, understood their strengths and weaknesses, and had chosen Rhydian for reasons he believed were beyond dispute.
More importantly, Evander loved Rhydian deeply.
That made Ariella and Leander's problem far more complicated. If Evander could not be convinced, then they would have to make him regret choosing Rhydian.
And eventually, mother and son arrived at a darker solution. They would destroy Rhydian's reputation so completely that Evander would have no choice but to remove him from the family.
The opportunity came on a Monday morning.
Evander arrived at the Kingsley family's corporate offices early that morning. What he did not know was that Leander had arrived before him, not because he intended to work, but because he had already set his plan into motion.
Leander entered the café area before anyone noticed him and tampered with the coffee that would eventually be served to Evander. He carefully introduced poison into the coffee preparation, knowing that the evidence would later point toward the person who prepared the drink.
That person would be Rhydian. Leander disappeared before Evander arrived. Not long afterward, Rhydian entered the café area. He had no idea that his half-brother had been there. He had no idea that the family member he had grown up beside had deliberately prepared a trap designed to destroy his life.
Rhydian simply prepared coffee for Evander as he normally might have done.
He carried the cup to Evander's office and handed it to him. Leander was already there and Rhydian had no reason to suspect anything.
Evander took several sips. At first, nothing happened.
Then his expression changed. He placed a hand against his stomach and complained of severe pain. Within moments, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and the people around him realized that something was seriously wrong.
The guards immediately rushed Evander to the hospital. The Kingsley family was informed, and everyone arrived in a state of panic Rhydian was among them, completely confused by what was happening.
He had prepared coffee for Evander that was all he knew. Eventually, the doctor came out of the treatment area and approached Xander. His expression was serious, Evander had been poisoned.
Thankfully, the doctors had managed to stabilize him, and he was no longer in immediate danger. However, the doctor needed to know exactly what Evander had consumed before becoming ill.
That was when Leander spoke. He turned toward Rhydian; he told the family that Rhydian had brought the coffee to Evander. The accusation immediately changed the atmosphere. Xander's expression hardened.
He looked at Rhydian as though he were suddenly seeing a stranger standing before him.
Rhydian tried to explain that he had only prepared the coffee and had no idea how poison could have entered it, but Xander was already furious. Years of emotional distance between father and son, combined with Ariella's influence and Leander's accusation, suddenly became a weapon against Rhydian.
Xander grabbed Rhydian with one hand and dragged him away. Rhydian resisted only enough to demand an explanation. He could not understand how his own father could believe that he would deliberately poison Evander.
But Xander did not listen. He took Rhydian to the Kingsley corporate offices, where the investigation began almost immediately. The coffee powder, the prepared coffee, and everything connected to the drink were taken away for examination.
The investigators began searching for evidence.
And because Rhydian had genuinely prepared the coffee, the evidence appeared devastating; his fingerprints were found throughout the café area. His fingerprints were on the coffee equipment the same way his fingerprints were on the coffee powder.
His fingerprints were on the cup and his fingerprints were exactly where they would have been if he had poisoned the drink himself.
Rhydian admitted that he had made the coffee.
He could not deny something that was true.
But when investigators asked him about the poison, he repeatedly said that he knew nothing about it. Nobody believed him, the circumstances were simply too convenient. The person who prepared the drink was Rhydian.
The person who delivered it to Evander was Rhydian. The evidence was covered with Rhydian's fingerprints and the person who benefited most from Evander removing Rhydian from the succession was his own half-brother, Leander.
Yet Rhydian could not prove the last part. He had no evidence that Leander had entered the café before him. He had no witness who had seen Leander tampering with the coffee. He had no recording showing what Leander had done.
The truth existed, but Rhydian had no way to place it in the hands of the investigators. The Kingsley family name made everything move quickly. The investigation was conducted with enormous pressure surrounding it, and Rhydian soon found himself facing criminal charges.
He desperately needed a lawyer. But nobody seemed willing to defend him. The Kingsley family carried immense influence, and the circumstances surrounding the case made Rhydian appear guilty even before the court process had fully begun. Lawyers who might otherwise have taken the case were reluctant to stand against the family.
Rhydian found himself increasingly isolated. The same family he had spent his entire life trying not to disappoint had now turned its back on him.
His father believed him guilty. Ariella had no reason to defend him.
Leander remained silent. And the family patriarch who had declared Rhydian the future heir was lying in a hospital bed after being poisoned. For Rhydian, the most painful part was not even the accusation itself.
It was that nobody truly knew him well enough to understand that he could never have done it. The court proceedings eventually began.
Rhydian stood before the court and maintained his innocence. He admitted that he had prepared the coffee, because lying about that would have been pointless, but he insisted that he had never added poison to it.
The evidence against him, however, appeared overwhelming. The investigators had found that he had prepared the drink. He had delivered it.
Evander had been poisoned immediately afterward.
There was no clear alternative suspect presented to the court, and the case against Rhydian continued to strengthen with every piece of evidence. Eventually, the verdict came. Rhydian Kingsley was found guilty.
The sentence was devastating. He was sentenced to eight years of hard labor but the punishment did not end there. Instead of being sent to an ordinary prison, Rhydian was transferred to one of the most dangerous prisons in Belloria.
The place was notorious for violence, hardened criminals, brutal conditions, and inmates who had little fear of authority. It was not the sort of prison where a wealthy family's son could simply use his surname to make life easier.
For the first time in his life, Rhydian entered a place where the Kingsley name could not protect him.
The prison gates opened.
He stepped inside.
The gates closed behind him.
And at only thirty-two years old, the man who had once been declared the future heir of one of Veridonia's most powerful families was now a convicted prisoner. Rhydian had entered the prison with nothing but the clothes he wore and the truth he could not prove.
His family had taken his name.
His father had abandoned him.
His inheritance had disappeared.
His future had been destroyed.
And somewhere outside those prison walls, Leander Kingsley had everything Rhydian had once been promised.
But what none of them understood was that Rhydian's story had not ended when the prison doors closed. For the first time in his life, there was no family around him to protect, disappoint, control, or judge him.
There was only Rhydian. And eight years ahead of him. Eight years in which the quiet boy who had spent his childhood enduring everything silently would have to become something far harder than the Kingsley family had ever imagined.
