Chapter 1
Leo Kingsley walked through the hospital lobby like he owned the building.
Dressed in loose beige pants and a half-unbuttoned white shirt, he looked more like a celebrity than an owner’s son. His curly black hair fell carelessly over his forehead, while expensive sunglasses hid his striking eyes. In one hand, he carried a bouquet of red roses. In the other, a small travel bag.
The moment the staff spotted him, nervous whispers spread through the lobby.
Everyone knew Leo Kingsley.
The younger son of Robert Kingsley.
Rich, arrogant, and brutally honest.
A man capable of making grown adults question their life choices with a single look.
Without slowing down, Leo stopped in front of a cabin.
Dr. Jason Brooks.
His boyfriend.
A slow smile spread across his face as he stared at the nameplate.
Without knocking, he pushed the door open.
The scene inside made him freeze.
Jason was kissing his secretary.
His shirt hung open while the woman sat on top of the desk, her arms around his neck.
Neither of them noticed Leo at first.
Leo leaned lazily against the doorframe.
“Are you done, Mr. Brooks?”
The woman gasped.
Jason’s entire body went rigid.
Slowly, Leo removed his sunglasses.
The coldness in his eyes made the woman instantly climb off the desk.
She grabbed her clothes and practically ran out of the room.
The door slammed shut behind her.
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Jason kept his eyes lowered.
He couldn’t bring himself to look at Leo.
Leo walked forward.
One step.
Then another.
Until only a few inches separated them.
“Baby...”
His voice was soft.
Almost affectionate.
“What happened?”
Jason clenched his fists.
“Leo, I—”
“How dare you cheat on me?”
The smile on Leo’s lips only grew wider.
Which somehow made him even scarier.
Jason’s back pressed against the desk.
Leo stepped closer.
“So...”
His gaze slowly traveled over Jason.
“How was she? Can she replace me?”
Jason couldn’t answer.
For the first time since they’d met, he looked genuinely nervous.
Leo laughed quietly.
The sound sent chills down Jason’s spine.
On the desk sat a glass of water.
Without warning, Leo picked it up.
Jason frowned.
“Leo...”
A second later, cold water poured down the front of Jason’s shirt.
Jason sucked in a sharp breath.
Leo placed the empty glass back on the desk.
“There.”
He tilted his head.
A beautiful smile appeared on his face.
“Are you cooled down now?”
The look in his eyes could have frozen hell itself.
“Don’t let me see your face again.”
Leo’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
Jason finally looked up.
The look in Leo’s eyes made his blood run cold.
“Because next time...”
A cold smile appeared on Leo’s lips.
“I might actually kill you.”
Before Jason could respond, Leo slammed the bouquet onto the desk.
The roses were scattered everywhere.
Red petals drifted across the polished wood like drops of blood.
Leo picked up the empty bouquet wrapper and held it out to Jason.
“Happy birthday.”
Jason froze.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Leo lifted the travel bag and tossed it onto the desk beside the flowers.
“I bought you a present too.”
The words felt like knives.
Jason stared at the gifts.
At the roses.
At everything Leo had brought for him.
And suddenly the weight of what he’d done crashed down on him.
Leo adjusted his sunglasses.
A mocking smile tugged at his lips.
“As for my return gift...”
His gaze swept across the room.
The lipstick stain on Jason’s neck.
The half-open shirt.
The evidence of betrayal.
Leo laughed.
“I already got one.”
Then he turned around and walked out.
This time, he never looked back.
“Yeah, brother. Where are you? I’m at the hospital.”
Leo balanced his phone between his shoulder and ear as he walked through the lobby.
“Look behind you.”
Leo turned.
His older brother, Ryan Kingsley, was walking toward him with a smile.
Unlike Leo, Ryan wore a white coat and carried himself with the calm confidence of a doctor.
“Hey.”
Ryan pulled him into a quick hug.
“How was the trip?”
“Good.”
The two brothers started walking through the hospital.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Ryan finally asked the question he had been avoiding.
“So... have you decided yet?”
Leo’s smile faded.
The answer came after a long silence.
“I don’t want to spend whatever time I have left staring at hospital walls.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“Leo...”
“There is only a one percent chance.”
Leo shrugged.
“If the surgery fails, I’ll die on an operating table.”
Ryan looked away.
Neither of them liked talking about it.
“What if it succeeds?” Ryan asked quietly.
Leo laughed.
“What if it doesn’t?”
The question hung between them.
Finally, Ryan sighed.
“Fine.”
He placed a hand on Leo’s shoulder.
“Where do you want to go?”
Leo blinked.
“What?”
“A country. A city. Anywhere.”
Ryan forced a smile.
“Tell me where you want to spend your time and I’ll take care of everything.”
For the first time that day, Leo looked genuinely surprised.
Then he smiled.
“Sure.”
Ryan was called away by a nurse a few minutes later.
Left alone, Leo wandered through the lobby while talking on his phone.
People rushed past him from every direction.
Without warning—
Someone slammed into his shoulder.
Papers exploded across the floor.
Leo frowned.
The other person immediately crouched down to gather them.
“Watch where you’re—”
The complaint died in his throat.
For some reason, Leo found himself kneeling to help.
A strange occurrence.
Leo Kingsley didn’t help people.
Ever.
As he picked up the scattered papers, an address caught his attention.
Riverbend.
He paused.
The other man was too busy collecting documents to notice.
“Why don’t you say sorry?” Leo asked.
The man finally looked up.
And for one brief second—
Leo forgot what he was going to say.
Brown eyes.
Messy hair.
Annoyed expression.
Nothing extraordinary.
Yet somehow Leo couldn’t look away.
The stranger frowned.
“Sorry. I was in a hurry.”
Then he grabbed the papers and stood.
Leo’s gaze dropped to the file in his hand.
Lily Carter.
His eyebrows rose.
“Your name is Lily?”
The stranger rolled his eyes.
“My Friend.”
Before Leo could say anything else, the man turned and hurried away.
Leo remained where he was.
Watching.
A smile slowly appeared on his lips.
Ryan returned a few moments later.
“What are you smiling at?”
Leo didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the exit where the stranger had disappeared.
“You asked me where I wanted to go.”
Ryan nodded.
Leo slipped the paper with the Riverbend address into his pocket.
“Riverbend.”
Ryan blinked.
“Riverbend? That’s barely even a town.”
Leo’s smile widened.
“Perfect.”
Ryan frowned.
“Why?”
For the first time all day, Leo looked genuinely interested in something.
“I don’t think finding him will be very difficult.”
“Who?” Ryan asked.
Leo finally looked away from the hospital entrance.
A smug smile tugged at his lips.
Instead of answering, he simply waved a hand.
“You’ll find out when I do.”
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
“Leo.”
But Leo was already walking backward.
“Anyway, I should go say hi to my other doctor friends.”
“The one who keeps trying to convince you to have surgery?”
“The very same.”
Ryan sighed.
“Try not to make him cry this time.”
Leo placed a hand over his heart.
“I would never.”
“You’re lying.”
“I know.”
With that, Leo flashed a grin and disappeared down the hallway.
“Sir, you can’t go in without an appointment.”
The receptionist quickly stood up when she saw Leo heading toward Ryan’s office.
Leo stopped.
Slowly lowering his sunglasses, he looked at her.
“He’s my brother.”
The woman straightened her back.
“That doesn’t matter. No appointment, no entry.”
Leo stared at her for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“You’re new here, aren’t you?”
She blinked.
“Yes. Why?”
“Because if you knew who I was, you wouldn’t have had the courage to stop me.”
The woman opened her mouth to reply.
Before she could, Leo’s attention shifted.
The door opened.
And out walked the same man from earlier.
The man who had crashed into him.
The man from Riverbend.
For a second, Leo completely forgot about the receptionist.
The stranger barely glanced at him before walking away.
Leo watched him go.
A slow smile spread across his face.
Interesting.
Without another word, Leo pushed open the office door and walked inside.
Ryan looked up from his desk.
“What now?”
Leo dropped into the chair opposite him.
“I want that guy.”
Ryan nearly choked on his coffee.
“What?”
“The guy who just left.”
Ryan stared at him.
Then realization flashed across his face.
“Oh. Sam”
Leo crossed one leg over the other.
“I like him.”
Ryan rubbed his temples.
“Leo...”
“And now I want him.”
“You saw him for less than a minute.”
“Your point?”
Ryan sighed heavily.
“Leo, he’s straight.”
Leo raised an eyebrow.
“So?”
“So he has a girlfriend.”
Ryan leaned back in his chair.
“He came here to discuss her medical reports.”
For a moment, silence filled the room.
Then Leo laughed.
A confident, arrogant laugh.
“Brother, don’t worry.”
Ryan immediately hated that smile.
Because he knew exactly what it meant.
“I know how to play with straight man.”
Ryan groaned.
“You’re impossible.”
Leo stood up.
“Maybe.”
He adjusted his sunglasses.
“You just take care of my trip to Riverbend.”
Ryan looked at his younger brother.
Stubborn.
Spoiled.
Hopelessly determined.
The moment Leo wanted something, nobody could stop him.
Unfortunately, Ryan had a feeling this time it wasn’t a thing.
It was a person.
