Summary

She was never supposed to meet him. He was never supposed to want her. Ira Malhotra, 24, is a fiercely independent Indian fashion designer in Milan. She fears no one, bends for no one, and has no interest in powerful men. Then comes Mel Cortez. Italian. Ruthless. Untouchable. A mafia king whose name alone is enough to make people step aside. Their first meeting should have been nothing more than business. Instead, it becomes a game of silent stares, sharp words, dangerous teasing and a chemistry neither of them can ignore. Ira refuses to be intimidated by him. Mel becomes intrigued by the one woman who doesn't seem to understand how dangerous he is. But behind their attraction lies a world of secrets, enemies and bloodshed—and the closer Ira gets to Mel, the closer danger gets to her. He calls her Wildcat. She calls him Mafia. Neither realizes that their greatest weakness may soon become each other. He was supposed to be the predator. So why does it feel like she is the one hunting him?

Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO MADE HIM LOOK TWICE

Milan had never truly been quiet.

It merely disguised its noise behind polished marble, expensive perfume, tailored suits, and million-dollar smiles.

Tonight was no different.

Crystal chandeliers poured golden light across one of Europe's most exclusive charity galas. CEOs, politicians, royal families, fashion icons, and billionaires moved through the ballroom like pieces on a perfectly arranged chessboard.

Everyone had come to be seen.

Except two people.

One never cared to be noticed.

The other never needed to be.

At the far end of the ballroom...

She walked in.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Simply...

...and the room changed.

Cream marble reflected the soft glow beneath her heels.

Her straight black hair rested naturally over one shoulder.

Her hazel-brown eyes were framed with clean kohl.

Sharp.

Calm.

Unreadable.

She wasn't the tallest woman in the room.

She didn't need to be.

Authority wasn't measured in height.

It was measured in presence.

And hers...

...could silence a room.

People looked.

Some admired.

Some envied.

Others simply stepped aside without realizing they had done so.

Because confidence like hers couldn't be taught.

It was lived.

Her name was...

Ira.

Founder of IRA Atelier.

The woman behind some of the world's most exclusive luxury fashion houses.

Her designs had been worn by queens, business leaders, royal families, and celebrities.

Yet...

Very few people had ever truly known the woman behind the empire.

She spoke little.

Observed everything.

Trusted almost no one.

Walking half a step behind her...

...was the only person allowed inside her world.

Soya.

Executive Secretary.

Business Manager.

Strategist.

Shadow.

If Ira built the empire...

Soya protected it.

Their communication rarely required complete sentences.

Sometimes...

Just one glance.

Soya quietly surveyed the ballroom.

Soya:

"Three ministers."

A brief pause.

"Six luxury conglomerates."

"Two royal delegates."

"And every fashion house that couldn't get your appointment."

Ira didn't even look around.

She picked up a glass of sparkling water.

Ira:

"They're not here for me."

Soya smiled.

Soya:

"They are."

Another beat.

"And they know it."

Across the ballroom...

A completely different world existed.

Black suits.

Silent earpieces.

Measured footsteps.

No unnecessary movement.

No unnecessary words.

Power...

Without display.

At the center of it all...

Sat one man.

Black suit.

Open collar.

Dark eyes.

Perfect posture.

One hand rested against the arm of an Italian leather chair.

Watching.

Always watching.

His name carried enough weight to silence governments.

Enough fear...

To start wars.

Enough respect...

To end them.

Mel Cortez.

Head of the Cortez Empire.

A name whispered across continents.

The man who could negotiate peace with one hand...

...and sign death warrants with the other.

He had never been interested in women.

Never chased beauty.

Never entertained attention.

Never confused attraction with weakness.

Feelings...

Were liabilities.

And liabilities...

Didn't survive in his world.

Then...

His eyes found her.

Time didn't stop.

He simply...

Forgot to look away.

For the first time in years...

Mel Cortez wasn't studying a threat.

He was studying a mystery.

She wasn't trying to impress anyone.

She wasn't looking for him.

She wasn't even aware he existed.

Yet somehow...

She became the only thing visible in a room filled with hundreds of people.

Without moving his eyes, Mel spoke.

His voice remained calm.

Controlled.

Almost emotionless.

Mel:

"Who is she?"

Standing beside him, his personal assistant looked across the ballroom.

Luca:

"I don't know, sir."

Mel's eyes never left Ira.

Mel:

"Find out."

A brief silence.

Then—

Mel:

"Everything."

"Every detail."

Across the ballroom...

As if sensing something...

Ira slowly lifted her eyes.

For the first time...

Their gazes met.

No smile.

No curiosity.

No admiration.

Just...

Recognition.

As though two people accustomed to commanding rooms...

Had finally found someone who didn't lower their eyes.

Neither looked away.

Soya noticed.

She followed Ira's gaze.

Then looked toward Mel.

Back to Ira.

Something...

Didn't feel ordinary.

Soya:

"Do you know him?"

Ira looked away first.

Calmly.

Without expression.

Ira:

"No."

A pause.

Then she added—

Ira:

"But..."

Her eyes briefly returned to him.

"He looks at people..."

"...as if he's already read the ending of their story."

At the other end of the ballroom...

Mel finally spoke again.

Almost to himself.

So quietly...

Only Luca heard it.

Mel:

"Interesting..."
