Chapter 1 Echoes empty void
"THE CUT IS FINALLY OUTSIDE THE BODY
3 months later. The hill. 6:04 AM. Winter._
The air smelled different now. Not of ozone and blood.
Of grass. Of flowers. Of `For Jesie. For Tomas. For Amy.` carved into three small stones.
Peace had returned to Arthur’s eyes. But peace is not the same as quiet.
For 90 days, they lived.
Ariel drew until her fingers cramped. She filled 7 sketchbooks. None of them had Arthur in it. "They’re landscapes," she lied.
Sarah cooked until the kitchen had no more spices. She made tea every night at 7pm sharp. "Routine is healing," she said.
Arthur trained. Not to destroy. To carry.
But the cut was never gone. It was just outside the body now.
And cuts outside the body still bleed.
It started with a letter. No address. No stamp.
Just a photo slipped under the door.
A glass vat. Empty. Cracked. And scratched inside: `SUBJECT 04 - MIRA - AWAITING DISPOSAL`
Ariel found it first. She didn’t scream. She just went white.
Sarah found her holding it, shaking.
Arthur found them both.
He read it once. Then again.
The grief he turned off in Phase 3 didn’t come back as rage.
It came back as something worse. Purpose.
"They’re doing it again," Arthur whispered. "To someone else."
Ariel crushed the photo. "Then we stop them."
Sarah: "You can’t. It’s illegal. It’s dangerous. You’ll—"
Arthur looked at the graves. "I couldn’t save my three. I can save hers."
That night, they didn’t sleep. They trained.
Not like before. Before was revenge. This was different.
*`ARTHUR`:* Trained until his arms gave out, then until they didn’t. He learned control. Phase 2 for 10 minutes without collapsing. He stopped using the void to erase. He used it to shield. "If I’m going to sacrifice myself, I’ll make sure it counts for everyone."
*`ARIEL`:* Reinforced her armor until it was 3 layers thick. She learned to fly without the Ring of Protection flaring. "If I go down, I go down in front of them." She started drawing battle plans. Still "not" drawing Arthur.
*`SARAH`:* Begged. "Take me." She’s 8. Too young, legally. Too smart, tactically. "I can patch you up. I can hack. I can—"
Arthur knelt to her level. "The way is cold. Disturbing. We don’t know what’s waiting. If you die because of me, I won’t survive it."
Sarah cried. Then nodded. "Then come back. Both of you."
Packing took 6 hours.
Not weapons. Supplies.
Med kits. Sarah’s handwritten notes: _"Change bandages every 12 hours. Drink water. Sleep."_
Ariel’s sketchbook. Blank pages at the end. "For after."
Arthur’s ring. He took it off the chain around his neck. The one Jesie gave him. He didn’t put it on. He put it in a small box. "I’ll bring it back when it’s over."
They signed papers. Not goodbye letters. Legal documents.
"To whom it may concern: If we do not return, give the house to Sarah. Give the kids we might find to her too."
Ariel’s hand shook signing it. Arthur’s didn’t.
Sarah stood at the door, blocking it. "I’m coming."
Arthur: "No."
Sarah: "Then I’ll follow you."
Arthur: "Then I’ll carry you back if you get hurt."
Long silence.
Sarah stepped aside. "Fine. But you better both come back, you absolute silly"
Dawn. The sky was grey. Not black. Not yet.
The path to Site B was 14km through the Dead Valley. Cold. Wind that sounded like static.
No one talked for the first 5km.
Ariel broke it. "You remember that time Tomas tried to cook?"
Arthur: _small smile_ "We ate charcoal for a week."
Ariel: "Amy laughed so hard she snorted."
Arthur stopped walking. The grief hit. Not as a wave. As a weight he chose to carry.
He turned it on. Not for fighting. For walking. For enduring.
"I used to fight so my friends wouldn’t die," Arthur said quietly.
Ariel looked at him.
"Now I fight so no one else has to feel this," he continued. "The life is gumbling. Everything is falling apart. But if I can stand in front of it... maybe someone else doesn’t have to."
Ariel bumped his shoulder. "Silly king."
Arthur: "Yeah."
They kept walking.
At km 13, the temperature dropped 10 degrees.
The sky tore. A thin line of black static. A `VOID SCAR`.
From inside it, a whisper. Not words. A feeling. _Erase. Erase. Erase._
Arthur’s eyes flickered dark for half a second.
Ariel grabbed his hand. No words. Just grip.
It passed.
In the distance: Site B. A concrete building half-buried in snow. One light on.
And in the window, a silhouette. Small. A kid. Pressing a hand to the glass.
Arthur took a breath. Phase 2 energy crackled, but soft. Controlled.
Ariel’s wings flared gold, but dim. Hidden.
They looked at each other.
"For Jesie," Arthur whispered.
"For Tomas," Ariel answered.
"For Amy," they said together.
"And for everyone else," Arthur finished.
They stepped forward. The door to Site B was waiting. The war was beginning.
