pride always leads to a downfall.
shades of Aesop's fables. a tale with a moralist vibe. In my opinion, all humans are like this. We never are satisfied with anything given over...we always want more. the flower, of course is symbolic. I actually saw a Star Gate episode which your story jogged that memory. (they are nothing alike...not saying that but each touched my heart in some way).
The aliens on Star Gate were empaths. They felt emotional upheaval with made them ill, physically and they could only be made well, when their planet was well. (a sudden, mysterious ailment befell them, one by one) In the end, a meteorite shower had torn the roots of these beautiful flowers that bloomed there. The flowers sang when they were happy. The soil was connected to the people of the planet so when the planet was ill and hurting, they felt it as if it were their own bodies.
the story was poignant, endearing and it taught a valuable lesson...much as your story.
