The bag of dark chocolate-covered almonds was the only thing standing between me and a complete administrative meltdown.

I was hunched over my desk in the corner of the makeshift production bullpens, squinting at a color-coded spreadsheet that looked like it had been designed by a sadist, when the panic started.

"We are completely screwed," Chloe shrieked, skidding to a halt beside my desk. Her clipboard nearly took out my mug of iced coffee the liquid slashing ever so slightly. "The entire production is dead in the water. We pull the plug, corporate pulls our funding, and I am officially moving back in with my parents to sell artisanal candles."

I popped another almond into my mouth, chewing slowly raising my eyebrow at her theatrics. "Breathe, Chloe. What happened this time? Did the caterers run out of vegan sliders, or did the lead cameraman elope with the boom mic operator?"

"Worse. Much, much worse," she hissed, leaning over so the headset around her neck rattled. "Contestant number four just dropped out. Severe case of gallstones. And under the broadcasting compliance contracts for The Submission, we have to maintain a strict ratio of four matched applicants for the opening sequence, or the whole network pilot gets scrapped."

I blinked, waving a hand vaguely at the monitor. "Okay? Then call an alternate from the waitlist pool."

"We don't have an alternate pool! Everyone else is either tied up in non-competes or already disqualified from background checks. The network execs are outside right now screaming about a breach of contract." Chloe grabbed my shoulders, her eyes wide with desperate, manic inspiration. "Penelope. You're an assistant on the crew, you're single, and technically you're a registered submissive on file from your college days—even if your old dynamic was practically a ghost town because your ex-boyfriend treated you like a roommate who occasionally folded his gym laundry."

I choked on my almond. "Hold on. Absolutely not. No."

"Just listen!" Chloe pleaded, shaking me slightly. "You step in for the opening segment. You walk out on stage, you let the primary bachelor do his introductory round of questioning, and within ten minutes, he can reject you. Boom. Pilot saved, contract fulfilled, and..." She leaned in, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "The emergency substitution clause pays out twenty thousand dollars in cash for filling an unexpected vacancy."

My brain stopped processing everything else. Twenty thousand dollars.

As a twenty-three-year-old film industry assistant living in a shoebox apartment, I was intimately familiar with the crushing reality of being an un-owned submissive making rent entirely on my own. No dominant to take care of me, no financial cushion, just endless bills, cheap takeout, and a bank account that always looked like a flatline. Twenty thousand dollars meant breathing room. It meant freedom. It meant I could quit this assistant job and finally hunt down a real career without waking up in a cold sweat about next month's electric bill.

"Twenty thousand?" I echoed, my skepticism warring hard with the math in my head.

"Guaranteed. Tax-free stipend for emergency crew fill-ins," Chloe swore, pressing a registration tablet into my hands. "Look around you, Penny. Everyone else in this building has a collar locked around their throat and a domestic owner keeping them on a short leash. You're un-collared, you're backstage, and you look gorgeous today. He won't even know the difference. We just swap the applicant name on the digital slate."

I looked down at the tablet, then down at my worn sneakers and the oversized cardigan I wore to survive the arctic blast of the studio air conditioning. "And if he picks me?"

Chloe let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh.

"Honey, please. Have you seen the guy we booked? He's the network's golden boy. Super elite, drop-dead gorgeous, strict as hell, and playing the ultimate eligible alpha bachelor for the cameras. He's looking for someone demure, perfectly submissive, and utterly compliant. You're going to give him the worst possible interview of your life, he's going to send you packing in thirty seconds flat, and you walk away with twenty grand richer."

That sounded entirely foolproof.

Ten minutes later, I had a heavy, polished steel collar locked securely around my throat a mandatory prop requirement for the set and my hair brushed out into a long, dark cascade over my shoulders. I was shoved onto the stage floor under blinding studio lights, standing in a line of five pristine, impeccably polished applicants.

They were all wearing identical silk dresses, standing with their hands neatly folded over their lower abdomens, eyes downcast, vibrating with eager anticipation.

Then he walked out from the shadows of the set.

My breath hitched. The ambient noise of the studio crew seemed to instantly mute.

Even under the harsh studio lighting, he commanded the room with terrifying, effortless authority. Broad shoulders, sharp jawline, slate-gray eyes that missed nothing, and an air of absolute, unyielding control. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that clung to his frame like a second skin.

He was a cop by trade everyone on the production crew knew his day job was keeping the city's streets in line but here, he was the primary bachelor holding all the cards.

I stared at him, blinking against the stage glare. He was breathtaking, certainly, but I had never met him before in my life. He was just another high-profile talent brought in by the network to star in their flashy new reality experiment.

He started down the line, stopping in front of the first trembling applicant, a sweet blonde who looked ready to faint.

"Tell me," his deep, gravelly voice resonated through the studio speakers, rich and uncompromising. "When rules are set, what is your first instinct?"

"To obey, sir," the girl whispered instantly, her hands trembling. "To be entirely agreeable to your every command."

He gave a slight, approving nod, moving down the line. The second, and third applicants all echoed the exact same sentiment: Agreeable. Compliant. Eager to please.

Then he stopped in front of me.

His slate-gray eyes locked onto mine. There was no flash of recognition just a sharp, clinical assessment, the kind of look a seasoned detective or a hardline dominant gave a new subject to test their resolve.

"And you," he murmured, stepping closer, the sheer physical weight of his presence pressing down on me. "The quiet one at the end of the line. When I command compliance, will you be agreeable?"

I swallowed hard, panic warring with my desperate need for that twenty-thousand-dollar check. I remembered Chloe's advice: Give him the worst possible answer.

I lifted my chin, letting a cool, honeyed elegance slip smoothly into my tone.

"Not particularly," I replied, my voice carrying clearly across the silent stage. "I tend to do what I want. Obedience sounds terribly tedious for someone with actual opinions."

A dead, absolute silence fell over the entire studio. Behind the cameras, I could see Chloe silently mouth the word suicide.

The bachelor went entirely still. The air between us turned ice-cold. Slowly, a dangerous, razor-sharp smirk curved the corners of his mouth.

"Is that so?" he asked softly, stepping entirely into my space, his gaze burning into mine with an intensity that made my knees weak. "We'll see about that."

Panic finally flared behind my ribs, sharp and cold.

Wait.

He didn't look angry. In fact, that dark, predatory smirk lingering at the corners of his mouth wasn't the expression of a man ready to dismiss me. It was the look of a hunter who had just spotted an unexpected challenge and decided it made the game infinitely more entertaining.

Oh, no, my brain screamed. He didn't reject me. He liked it.

If he didn't send me packing right here and now, I was going to be stuck on this damn show longer. I'd actually have to compete. I'd have to stay on camera, wearing this ridiculous steel collar, potentially getting locked into a grueling filming schedule with a hyper-authoritative alpha bachelor just because my sarcastic quip backfired spectacularly.

I needed out. Immediately.

The bachelor Dante, or whatever his name was on the cue cards I vaguely glanced at was still standing too close, his slate-gray eyes boring into mine as if he could read every frantic, backtracking thought in my head.

I had to course-correct.

Fast.

"Or," I blurted out, my voice pitching up just a fraction before I hastily smoothed it back into a veneer of polite composure, "on second thought... obedience can be extraordinarily refreshing. Truly. Why reinvent the wheel when centuries of traditional structure have proven so wonderfully efficient?"

Hope that worked I think.

The studio went dead silent again, but for an entirely different reason.

Dante didn't blink. His gaze slowly dropped from my eyes down to the heavy steel collar locked around my throat, then back up, a slow, amused disbelief playing across his sharp features.

"Is that your professional opinion?" he asked, his deep voice dripping with rich, dry sarcasm.

"Oh, absolutely," I pressed on, channeling every ounce of frantic, unconvincing enthusiasm I could muster while desperately trying to look like the most boring, compliant applicant on the stage. I folded my hands over my lower abdomen, mimicking the exact posture of the trembling blonde beside me. "I am deeply, profoundly agreeable. I love rules. Who doesn't love rules? They're like cozy little guardrails for the soul. I will nod at everything you say. I will fold your laundry until morale improves. Honestly, I live to please."

Behind the camera crane, Chloe dropped her clipboard with a loud, echoing clatter.

I need to learn to shut up.

Dante stared at me for a long, agonizing beat. The silence stretched so thin I could hear the faint hum of the overhead studio lights. Then, a low, rumbling chuckle vibrated in his chest.

"A sudden convert," he murmured, stepping just a fraction closer, his eyes glinting with a dangerous, knowing intelligence. "Fascinating. Tell me, applicant number four... do you usually flip your entire worldview in the span of three seconds, or is selective compliance a special talent of yours?"

"It's a gift," I smiled tightly, sweating through my silk dress. Please send me home. Please, please, please send me home. "I'm very adaptable."

Dante held my gaze for another heartbeat, the corners of his mouth twitching as if he were fighting back a full-scale grin. Then, he turned smoothly on his heel, addressing the entire line of applicants with a crisp, commanding tone that left no room for argument.

"Thank you, ladies. That will be all for the introductory round. The production team will notify the chosen participants shortly."

He didn't name me on the spot, but as he walked off the stage toward the producer's booth, he glanced back over his shoulder, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine one last time with an unmistakable, silent promise.

I stood frozen in my silk dress and steel collar as the cameras cut, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. There is no way, I thought numbly. There is absolutely no way he just fell for that.

Ten minutes after stumbling off the stage, I was back in the makeshift production dressing room, aggressively stripping off the heavy steel collarand dropping it off as though it might burn me. It took three tries and a metal key I had to steal from a passing grip, but it finally clicked open, leaving a faint, pink indentation on my skin.

I collapsed onto a folding chair, tossing the collar onto the makeup counter next to my half-eaten bag of dark chocolate-covered almonds. My hands were still shaking.

"What the hell was that?" Chloe yelled, bursting through the dressing room door with her headset shoved up one off her ear. "You went from sharp-tongued rebel to a Stepford wife in five seconds flat! The producers are losing their minds out there. They love the friction!"

"I don't want them to love it, Chloe," I groaned, burying my face in my hands. "I want them to hate it. I wanted to get cut so I could take my twenty grand and go home."

"Well, you might get your money, but you aren't going home anytime soon," Chloe said, tossing a thick packet of stapled paper onto my lap. "The first round of cuts just finished. One applicant was sent packing. You and two other girl made it through to Round Two."

I stared at the papers like they were venomous. "What? No. That's impossible. I gave the most transparently fake, spineless answers in reality television history."

"Apparently, the bachelor likes a project," Chloe grinned, pulling up a chair and leaning forward. "And speaking of your new career trajectory... sign page fourteen of the master terms rider. Legal sent it down for the survivors of Round One before we start the cohabitation and vetting phase tomorrow."

I frowned, picking up the packet and flipping past the glossy headshots to the dense, single-spaced legal text at the back. My eyes scanned the boilerplate clauses about broadcast rights, liability waivers, and arbitration.

Then my eyes locked on a section header in bold print: ARTICLE IV: DOMESTIC COHABITATION AND OBLIGATIONS.

My chewing stopped. I leaned closer to the light, my eyes tracking down the lines.

...Furthermore, selection past Round One constitutes a binding agreement to enter a total-immersion domestic submissive contract. The participant agrees to full-time cohabitation at the primary Dom's private residence for the duration of the multi-round elimination structure...

I blinked. "Chloe... what is this?"

"Standard reality show housing rider," she waved a hand dismissively. "You live in the mansion, you follow the house rules, camera crews follow you around."

"No, look closer," I whispered, my voice dropping an octave as I read further down the page. '...inclusive of absolute behavioral compliance, mandatory domestic servitude, exclusive physical and emotional submission, and unrestricted marital-style fidelity. The chosen submissive acknowledges that entry into Round three grants the primary Dominant full managerial authority over her schedule, wardrobe, rule accountability, and intimate availability...'

My blood ran completely cold.

"Intimate availability?" I choked out, my head snapping up to glare at her. "Chloe, this isn't a dating show contract. This is a binding, full-spectrum lifestyle indenture! It's practically a pre-arranged marriage contract crossed with an absolute Dom/sub ownership clause!"

"Oh," Chloe blinked, looking slightly uncomfortable. "Right. I meant to mention that. The Submission isn't just about dating. The network partnered with some ultra-traditional private legal trust to make it legally binding under alternative domestic partnership laws. Once you pass Round Two tomorrow, you're locked into the house with him. Full-time sub, twenty-four-seven until there's one left."

I stared at her in absolute, unadulterated horror.

Twenty thousand dollars suddenly didn't look like a fun little windfall. It looked like the price of my entire soul, signed away because I was too busy eating almonds to read the fine print.

"There are three rounds, right?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm as my fingers gripped the edge of the paper.

"Yep," Chloe nodded carefully. "Round One just cut the field to three. Round Two is the live domestic integration challenge at his private estate tomorrow morning. And Round Three is the final selection between two."

A slow, determined fire kindled in my chest. If Round Two was at his estate, and it required absolute, flawless submissive performance... then I had my mission.

I didn't need to get cut in the studio anymore. I was going to pack my bags, step into his house tomorrow, and execute a masterclass in passive-aggressive, infuriatingly elegant resistance. I would be so difficult to manage, so unbearably stubborn under the guise of sweet compliance, that he would throw me out of his house by nightfall.

I'd keep my dignity, I'd keep my independence, and I'd figure out a way to steal that twenty grand on my way out the door.

"I have to go home and pack," I said, standing up so abruptly my chair scraped against the linoleum floor. "I need my own clothes, my own toiletries, and at least three different hoodies to process this level of corporate betrayal."

Chloe laughed, pushing me gently back down by the shoulders. "Oh, sweetie. You aren't going home tonight. Production vans are moving all remaining contestants straight to the bachelor's private estate."

"I am not going to a stranger's mansion without packing a single pair of undies," I protested, crossing my arms.

"You don't need to," Chloe replied smoothly, holding up a sleek digital tablet. "Legal already synced your sizes. The primary Dom has a complete, customized wardrobe waiting in your room at the estate of all contestants as he knows the challenges. Every outfit, every accessory, every mandatory dress code requirement for the duration of your stay has been pre-selected and laid out."

I stared at her, my jaw dropping. "He pre-selected my clothes? Without my input? That is so profoundly stupid."

"It's standard protocol for traditional domestic placement—"

"I don't care if it's standard protocol, it's controlling nonsense," I snapped, grabbing my bag and marching straight toward the exit. "I am an adult woman, not an incoming shipment of inventory. If he wants me in his house, I am wearing my own clothes."

Thirty minutes later, I had completely bypassed the production convoy, driven straight to my shoebox apartment, thrown three weeks of mismatched laundry into my battered canvas suitcase, and arrived at the sprawling iron gates of the bachelor's private estate entirely on my own terms.

The estate was a fortress of dark stone, manicured hedges, and intimidating architectural wealth nestled away in the hills. A towering butler in a sharply tailored charcoal waistcoat met me at the grand double doors. He didn't look surprised by my unauthorized arrival or my battered canvas luggage. He simply surveyed me with the kind of polished, chilling politeness that only came from working for terrifyingly powerful men.

"Miss Penelope, I presume," the butler said, his voice smooth and measured. He gestured for me to follow him down a cavernous, art-adorned hallway. "The other finalist arrived with the crew transport an hour ago and is currently settling into the east wing. Your quarters are in the west wing."

He led me into a massive, high-ceilinged guest suite that smelled faintly of cedar and expensive cologne. A plush velvet bed sat in the center, and against the far wall stood an open mahogany wardrobe.

Neatly hung inside that wardrobe was a terrifyingly strict, uniform array of silk dresses, muted cardigans, and conservative loungewear all in rigid shades of charcoal, navy, and cream.

The butler's gaze drifted from my face down to my worn canvas suitcase resting on the floor. A faint, aristocratic eyebrow arched upward.

"Were you not aware, Miss Penelope, that the master had a complete wardrobe specifically tailored and set out for you to wear during your stay?" he inquired, his tone dripping with polite disapproval.

I unzipped my suitcase with a sharp zipper sound, pulled out a faded band t-shirt, and tossed it onto the bed with deliberate casualness.

"I was perfectly aware of it," I replied, turning to meet his gaze with a cool, unbothered smile. "I'm just not going to wear them."

The butler stared at the faded band t-shirt resting on the pristine velvet duvet, then slowly raised his gaze back to meet mine. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of sheer, unadulterated disbelief rippled beneath his otherwise impenetrable mask of aristocratic calm.

In a world where every submissive bowed, scraped, and treated a dominant's word as absolute law, my casual defiance was practically a declaration of war.

He didn't argue. He didn't lecture me or threaten to call security. People who worked for men like the primary bachelor understood one fundamental truth: surviving in this house meant knowing when to step out of the blast radius.

"Very well, miss," the butler said smoothly, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet resignation. He bowed his head just a fraction. "I'll let him know."

With that, he turned on his heel and glided out of the suite, the heavy oak door clicking softly shut behind him.

I let out a long, shaky breath, tossing my suitcase onto the luggage rack and collapsing into a plush armchair by the window. Outside, the sun was beginning to dip below the manicured hills, casting long, dramatic shadows across the estate's sprawling gardens.

I've officially poked the bear, I thought, rubbing my temples. And not just any bear an alpha cop with a massive television budget and a legally binding domestic contract that I didn't ducking read!

If Dante or whatever his real name was under all the reality TV gloss found out I had flat-out rejected his custom wardrobe before the first official challenge had even begun, he was going to come down here and try to establish dominance so fast my head would spin.

And that was exactly what I wanted.

Let him try to put me in my place. Let him lecture me about rules and respect. The faster he got furious, the faster he'd pack my bags, hand me my walking papers, and write me a check for twenty grand to make me disappear.

Ha

I stood up, crossing the room to the rebellious mahogany wardrobe, and deliberately shoved a hanger aside to make room for my own clothes. I had my battle lines drawn. Now, I just had to wait for him to make his move.

I dumped the rest of my modest belongings onto the bed, bypassing the immaculate hangers entirely, and reached deep into the side pocket of my canvas suitcase.

Out came my true survival gear: a thick, dog-eared paperback book filled with grueling, expert-level Sudoku puzzles, a battered paperback collection of cryptic crossword puzzles, and a mechanical pencil with a completely chewed-off eraser.

In a universe where every other submissive in this house was probably spending their evening smoothing down silk skirts, practicing their curtsies, and hyperventilating over the proper etiquette for addressing a dominant, I was setting up camp like I was preparing for a solitary confinement stint in a maximum-security prison.

"Let him try to put me in a pastel cardigan," I muttered, tossing the puzzle books onto the polished mahogany nightstand right next to a half-empty tin of mints and a crumpled receipt for iced coffee.

I grabbed my violently orange hoodie bearing the logo of a local indie movie house no one had heard of and pulled it over my head. It was the exact kind of armor I needed to remind myself that just because I had signed a terrifying legal document for twenty thousand dollars didn't mean I had lost my mind. I was an independent fiction writer and a chronically stressed film assistant who survived on caffeine and stubbornness; I didn't need a man to manage my life, and I certainly didn't need a prim, suit-wearing bachelor dictating my wardrobe.

I curled up in the plush armchair by the window, cracked open my cryptic crossword book to a particularly vicious puzzle involving nineteenth-century literary references, and clicked my mechanical pencil.

Thirty minutes vanished in a flash of blissful, insulating concentration. I was happily chewing on the plastic barrel of my pencil, muttering under my breath as I tried to figure out a seven-letter word for "reluctant acquiescence," when the peaceful quiet of my suite was violently shattered.

Knock. Knock.

Two slow, deliberate raps echoed against the heavy oak door.

The silence that followed was absolute. My hand froze mid-letter, the mechanical pencil hovering inches from the paper as the sound reverberated through the quiet room.

There was no polite announcement from the butler this time. No deferential shuffling of feet. Just the heavy, unmistakable weight of someone standing on the other side of that wood, entirely accustomed to doors unlocking the second he arrived.

I didn't rush to stand up. I didn't scramble to hide my crossword book or smooth down my violently orange hoodie. Instead, I carefully capped my mechanical pencil, laid it neatly across the spine of the open book, and took a slow, unbothered breath.

"Yes?" I called out, my voice carrying a cool, melodic cadence that drifted effortlessly across the spacious suite.

The heavy oak door unlatched with a smooth, silent click and swung inward.

Dante stood framed in the doorway. He had shed his suit jacket, his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar to reveal the sharp, corded line of his throat, tattoos, the faint scar just below his jaw catching the warm amber light of the hallway. He looked less like a corporate bachelor pitching a television pilot and more like a high-ranking predator who had finally tracked down a particularly troublesome stray into its den.

His slate-gray eyes swept the room in a fraction of a second taking in the unmade bed, my canvas suitcase shoved disrespectfully into the corner, the untouched custom wardrobe, and finally, me, lounging comfortably in an armchair with a crossword puzzle in my lap.

He didn't look angry. In fact, a slow, dangerous amusement touched the corners of his mouth.

"I was informed," Dante began, his deep, gravelly voice rich with a quiet, controlled irony, "that my staff encountered a rather... unique administrative hurdle upon your arrival."

I tilted my head, offering him a sweet, perfectly earnest smile that didn't quite reach my eyes.

"Ah, the wardrobe department," I replied, my tone smooth, light, and devastatingly polite. "Please tell me you didn't penalize your lovely butler on my account. It's hardly his fault if the estate's curating algorithms suffer from a slight lack of imagination. After all, expecting a woman to wear mass-produced, pre-selected garments is such a comforting shortcut for those who might find the burden of original personal expression just a bit too intellectually taxing to manage on their own."

Dante froze. For a single heartbeat, the air in the room went dead still as his brain processed the sentence. Then, a sharp, sudden twitch hit the corner of his jaw as the hidden barb fully registered beneath the layers of my syrupy-sweet delivery.

He slowly stepped over the threshold, closing the door behind him with a soft click that sounded entirely like a trap snapping shut.

I blinked slowly, looking from the closed door back up to his face.

"You closed the door," I murmured, my voice dripping with an almost clinical curiosity as I tilted my head. "And unless your production crew has mastered the art of translucent operating gear, I'm forced to wonder where the cameras are. Shouldn't there be a small army of exhausted twenty-somethings with boom mics awkwardly lurking in the corners right now?"

Dante stopped just a few feet away, towering over the armchair with an effortless, imposing authority. He let out a low, rough laugh, the sound dripping with confident, unbothered amusement.

"Relax, princess," he drawled, his voice a gravelly rumble that practically vibrated in the quiet room. "The cameras are on a scheduled break. And as for the door?" He leaned one broad shoulder casually against the wall, crossing his arms over his chest as his heavy-lidded gaze locked onto mine. "I figured a little privacy was in order so I could figure out what to do with a guest who thinks a clothing rack is optional."

I offered a polite, skeptical tilt of my head, letting a light, airy amusement color my tone.

"How considerate of you," I replied smoothly, folding my hands over the spine of my puzzle book. "Though I suppose privacy is a necessary luxury when your grand design for a submissive television romance hits a rather... stubborn speedbump on day one. Tell me, do you usually lock yourself in a room to argue over wardrobe choices, or is micromanaging laundry just a fun little hobby you picked up between shifts?"

Dante pushed off the wall, closing the distance between us until he was standing right over the armchair. He didn't look irritated in the slightest; instead, his gaze tracked over my violently orange hoodie and my stubborn, unimpressed expression with a slow, calculating heat.

"You think you're being a headache," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly hum that sent an entirely unwelcome shiver straight down my spine. "You think acting like a difficult, sharp-tongued brat is going to make me hand you your twenty grand and send you packing."

I kept my chin up, giving him a sweet, blank blink. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm simply a creature of comfort."

"Are you?" He leaned down slightly, resting one heavy hand on the arm of the chair right beside my knee, boxing me in. "Truth is, princess... I can't stand easy subs. I don't want someone who just stands there shaking and saying yes to everything I breathe. It's boring." A slow, arrogant smirk spread across his face. "And you? You're giving me a fight before the game's even started. I like it."

My stomach gave a violent, traitorous lurch.

Oh, no.

The entire strategy the grand plan to be so intensely annoying and uncooperative that he'd boot me off the show within twenty-four hours was built entirely on the assumption that he wanted a compliant, docile pushover. If he actually liked the friction, if my defensive sass was acting as some sort of twisted aphrodisiac for his ego, then playing difficult wasn't going to get me kicked out at all.

It was going to trap me here.

Panic flashed hot and sharp behind my ribs. If I kept pushing, I wasn't going to win my freedom; I was going to get sucked deeper and deeper into his twisted little reality TV game, locked in this mansion, forced to play out a multi-round dominance dynamic with a man who was entirely too perceptive for his own good.

I needed to backpedal, and I needed to do it right now.

I snapped my crossword book shut, shoved my mechanical pencil into my pocket, and offered him a tight, profoundly insincere smile.

"Fine. Duly noted," I chirped, my voice dripping with forced, sugary compliance. "Point taken, master of the universe. You love a challenge. Riveting. But I've suddenly developed an overwhelming appreciation for structural integrity and traditional wardrobe guidelines."

Dante's eyebrows arched, thoroughly amused by my sudden shift in gear. "Is that right?"

"Oh, absolutely," I said, standing up from the armchair and marching straight over to the mahogany wardrobe, wrenching the door open to reveal his meticulously curated collection of charcoal and cream silk. "I'll wear your clothes. I'll send them right back in, I'll smile for the cameras tomorrow, and you can leave." I grabbed a conservative cream-colored cardigan off a hanger and shoved it awkwardly into his chest. "Here's your preview. Now, please take your arrogant smirk and get out of my room so I can change."

Dante caught the cardigan effortlessly against his chest, looking down at it, then back up at me. The arrogant smirk on his face deepened into something slow, wicked, and entirely triumphant.

"Take your time, Penelope," he rumbled softly, turning on his heel and walking toward the door with a lazy, predatory swagger. "We have plenty of time to break you in."

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him, leaving me alone in the silent, suffocating luxury of the guest suite.

I stood staring at the closed panel for three full seconds before I let out a long, shuddering groan and buried my face in my hands.

Trapped.

I had officially walked right into my own trap. The second I showed a flicker of actual personality, I had handed him exactly what he wanted. No easy outs. No quick dismissals. Just a golden-boy alpha with a network budget and a terrifying glint in his eye who viewed my stubbornness not as a dealbreaker, but as an invitation.

I looked down at the conservative cream cardigan still clutched in my fist, then glared over at the pristine row of matching silk dresses hanging inside the wardrobe.

"I hate reality television," I muttered to the empty room. "I hate money. And most of all, I hate dark chocolate-covered almonds that lead to life-altering financial decisions."

What have I done?

With a heavy heart and a profound sense of impending doom, I tossed the cardigan onto the bed, stripped off my violently orange hoodie, and pulled the offending cream fabric over my head. It fit with an irritating, tailored perfection that only made me resent it more.

If I was going to survive this waking nightmare and figure out how to claw my way out of Round Two tomorrow, I needed a strategy. Playing rebellious hadn't worked because he was a sadist who enjoyed the pushback. Playing compliant felt like selling my soul.

That meant I needed a third option: malicious compliance on a scale this network had never witnessed before.

I marched back over to the nightstand, picked up my dog-eared crossword puzzle book, and flipped to a fresh page. If he wanted a submissive, he was going to get one delivered with the exact, soul-crushing precision of a woman who would rather chew glass than lose her independence.

The first test of Round Two started at dawn. And I intended to make him regret every single syllable of that arrogant smirk.

I decided to check the fandom for the show and check the comments about the first day.

AlphaDom99: "She gave him that total brat-tame look when she walked in; I bet he bends her over his desk before the night is even over to cure that attitude."

SubmissiveCentral: "One look at her face and you know she needs to be firmly pinned against that king-sized bed until she stops talking back."

GildedCollar: "Zero privacy from here on out. They should rig the bedroom with audio monitors just to broadcast her breathless begging when he finally breaks her."

My face flushed hot, a stinging mix of secondhand humiliation and sharp embarrassment burning through my veins. Thousands of strangers were sitting behind anonymous handles, eagerly writing explicit, over-the-top fantasies about a woman they had barely seen for ten minutes on national television, treating my life like an interactive adult novel.

I scrolled past another incredibly graphic suggestion involving total physical surrender, my stomach twisting into a tight knot.

"Okay, nope," I whispered, slamming the laptop lid down with enough force to rattle the entire nightstand. "I am done. I am officially done."

I shoved the computer to the edge of the mattress, pulled the heavy duvet up to my chin, and squeezed my eyes shut against the dark room.

"I seriously wish I had some magical eye drops right now," I muttered into the empty space, rubbing my temples. "Just so I could blink and permanently bleach every single one of those disgusting sentences out of my brain."

The silence of the room settled back over me, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the faint hum of the estate's central air conditioning. I lay there for a long time, staring up into the absolute darkness, waiting for the phantom glow of the laptop screen to fade from my retinas. Every time I closed my eyes, those anonymous usernames and their crude, invasive predictions flickered behind my eyelids, making my skin prickle with a fresh wave of irritation.

Ten minutes. They had watched me stutter through an introduction, trip over a prop, and put up a pathetic, half-baked front of sarcasm and already the internet had turned me into a character in their own private midnight fiction.

"Unbelievable," I whispered into the pillow, turning over and punching it into a slightly softer shape.

If this was what the fanbase looked like on night one, I didn't even want to imagine what kind of circus would erupt by the time we reached the next eliminations. The producers must have been sitting in the control room right now, drinking champagne and rubbing their hands together in glee at the engagement metrics. Every nasty comment, every over-the-top fantasy, every shred of discomfort I felt was just another data point driving up their ratings.

Fine. Let them watch. Let them speculate.

Tomorrow morning, the cameras would roll again, Dante would step out of his wing looking like an Armani ad designed in a laboratory, and Round Two would officially commence. They wanted a show? I'd give them a masterpiece of passive-aggressive compliance. I would wear their stupid clothes, I would hit every mark on the production schedule just as everyone else, and I would smile so sweetly it would give the entire camera crew cavities.

With a final, resolute sigh, I let my muscles relax against the mattress, the exhaustion of the day finally catching up to me.

Sleep couldn't come fast enough.

i feel so confused right now regarding the rules in this universe. She doesn’t have a dominant but does not have to hide. lillith didn’t have a dominant but was registered and hid, Camilla hid and was registered but outside uni and Dorothy was unregistered and hid. being unregistered is a crime, being registered at uni but not having a dom is not alloud but not a crime, being registered but not having a dom outside of uni is totally fine or....?

i really like these books by the way about his universe. always looking forward to the next update. 😊❤️the collard thief is a bit harder right now because i really don’t like those bastards, but i guess they will be more likeable in the future. so far i like sloan and lilliths dynamics the best and really apreciated the funnier conversations in those two books.
