Chapter 1THE VOICE

Mara Voss had spent six years exposing lies.

Politicians. Police officers. Businessmen.

She thought she had heard every kind of lie imaginable.

Then, at 2:13 a.m., an unknown number sent her a forty-seven-second audio file.

She almost deleted it.

Instead, she pressed play.

A man's frightened voice filled the darkness.

"My name is Daniel Reed. If you're hearing this, I'm already dead."

Mara froze.

Daniel Reed had been dead for three years.

His death had been ruled an accidental drowning.

The recording continued.

"They said nobody would believe me. They were wrong. The body in the river isn't mine."

The file ended.

Mara replayed it.

Then again.

She searched Daniel's name online. Every article described the same story: Daniel Reed, 31, drowned after leaving a private party near Bellgrave Lake.

No suspicious circumstances.

No investigation reopened.

Nothing.

Mara stared at the recording details.

It had been created three years after Daniel's supposed death.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a whisper came through.

"Stop looking for the truth."

The call ended.

Mara looked toward her apartment window.

Across the street, beneath a broken streetlight, someone was standing in the rain.

Watching her.

She rushed downstairs.

The street was empty.

Only a small black envelope remained outside her door.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel Reed was standing beside four people.

One of them was Mara's editor.

The other three faces had been scratched away.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

THE TRUTH DOESN'T DISAPPEAR.

IT SLEEPS.

END OF EPISODE 1EPISODE 2 — THE FOURTH NAME

Mara did not sleep that night.

She placed the photograph, the recording, and the envelope on her desk and stared at them until sunrise.

There was one question she couldn't escape.

Why was her editor, Thomas Vale, standing beside Daniel Reed?

At 8:30 a.m., Mara walked into the newsroom.

Thomas was already there.

“You look terrible,” he said.

“I found something.”

His expression changed.

Mara placed the photograph on his desk.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he turned it face down.

“Where did you get this?”

“That isn't an answer.”

“Mara, listen to me. You need to forget Daniel Reed.”

“Why?”

“Because people who tried to remember him disappeared.”

Mara stared at him.

“Who?”

Thomas looked toward the newsroom windows.

“Three years ago, Daniel wasn't investigating a murder.”

“What was he investigating?”

Thomas lowered his voice.

“A list.”

“What list?”

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Don't leave this building,” he whispered.

Then he walked away.

Mara followed him.

Thomas entered an empty conference room and answered the call.

Mara stood outside the door.

She couldn't hear the voice on the other end.

But she heard Thomas say:

“I never told her anything.”

A pause.

Then:

“No. She has the photograph.”

Another pause.

Thomas whispered:

“Then we're already too late.”

Mara stepped into the room.

Thomas turned around.

The phone slipped from his hand.

On the floor, the screen was still glowing.

A message had appeared:

ONE OF YOU IS LYING.

Mara looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out an old key.

“Daniel left this with me.”

Mara took it.

“What does it open?”

Thomas looked directly into her eyes.

“His apartment.”

Mara's heart stopped.

“Daniel's apartment was destroyed after his death.”

Thomas shook his head.

“That's what everyone was told.”

He handed her a second photograph.

It showed a small apartment building at the edge of Bellgrave.

Written underneath was an address.

Mara recognized it immediately.

It was the building where she had lived as a child.

And suddenly, she remembered something she had forgotten for years.

A night.

A scream.

And Daniel Reed standing outside her childhood bedroom window.

END OF EPISODE 2EPISODE 3 — THE ROOM THAT REMEMBERED

Mara stood outside the old apartment building for almost ten minutes before entering.

The place looked exactly as it had in her childhood memories.

Same cracked walls.

Same narrow staircase.

Same broken light above the entrance.

But there was one difference.

Apartment 4B was supposed to have been empty for years.

Tonight, a thin line of light appeared beneath its door.

Mara held Daniel's key tightly.

She unlocked it.

The door opened with a long, painful creak.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Except for one chair.

Someone had recently been sitting there.

Mara stepped forward.

On the wall was a collection of photographs.

Daniel.

Thomas.

Three strangers.

And Mara.

Her breath caught.

She moved closer.

Every photograph showed the same location—the apartment building.

Then she noticed something in the corner of one picture.

A little girl.

Her.

Mara touched the photograph.

A memory suddenly returned.

She was eight years old.

Standing in this same hallway.

Daniel was kneeling in front of her.

He was bleeding.

He had placed one finger against his lips.

"Don't tell anyone I'm here."

Mara stepped backward.

“No…”

A sound came from the bedroom.

She turned.

The door slowly opened.

Nobody was inside.

Only an old cassette recorder sat on the floor.

Mara pressed play.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"Mara, if you found this, then they failed to stop you."

She froze.

"You don't remember what happened that night. That's because someone made sure you wouldn't."

Mara's hands began to shake.

"Your father wasn't the man who betrayed me."

Silence.

Then Daniel continued.

"It was someone you trusted."

The recording stopped.

Mara looked around the room.

Behind the wardrobe, she discovered a hidden metal box.

Inside were newspaper clippings, photographs, and a list of names.

Four names had been crossed out.

The fifth name was still untouched.

MARA VOSS.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

YOU WERE NEVER THE INVESTIGATOR.

Another message followed.

YOU WERE THE WITNESS.

Mara slowly looked toward the apartment window.

Across the street stood a man in a dark coat.

She recognized him.

Thomas.

But Thomas was supposed to be at the newsroom.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

Thomas's voice whispered:

“Don't trust the man outside.”

Mara looked through the window again.

The man removed his hood.

It wasn't Thomas.

It was Daniel Reed.

Mara stopped breathing.

Daniel looked directly at her.

Then he smiled.

And disappeared into the darkness.

END OF EPISODE 3EPISODE 4 — THE MAN WHO DIED

Mara ran downstairs.

The street was empty.

No Daniel.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

She called Thomas.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

“Outside the old apartment.”

Silence.

Then Thomas said, “Leave.”

“Daniel was here.”

Another silence.

“I saw him.”

Thomas finally whispered, “Then you saw the wrong man.”

Mara's stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“I'll explain everything. But not over the phone.”

The call ended.

Mara returned to Apartment 4B.

The metal box was still on the floor.

She opened it again.

Beneath the photographs was a small identity card.

DANIEL REED

But the photograph attached to it wasn't Daniel.

It was another man.

Mara stared at it.

Someone had been using Daniel's identity.

She turned the card over.

A handwritten sentence covered the back:

Daniel Reed never existed.

Suddenly, the apartment door slammed shut.

Mara turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

She recognized him from the photograph.

One of the three people whose face had been scratched out.

“Who are you?” Mara asked.

He didn't answer.

Instead, he said, “You finally remembered.”

“Remembered what?”

“That night.”

Mara stepped backward.

He continued.

“You were there when Daniel disappeared.”

“I was eight.”

“You saw everything.”

A sharp memory struck her.

Rain.

A car.

Daniel arguing with someone.

Her father standing nearby.

Then a gunshot.

Mara covered her mouth.

“No…”

The man looked at her sadly.

“Your father didn't kill Daniel.”

“Then who did?”

He reached into his coat and handed her an old photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside a woman.

Mara knew her.

It was her mother.

But her mother had always told Mara that she had never met Daniel.

The man whispered:

“Your mother knew the truth.”

Mara stared at the photograph.

“Where is she now?”

He looked toward the window.

“She never left Bellgrave.”

Mara's phone suddenly rang.

The caller ID displayed a name she hadn't seen in fifteen years.

MOM

Mara couldn't move.

The man stepped away from the door.

“Answer it.”

With trembling hands, Mara accepted the call.

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman's voice said:

“Mara…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mom?”

The voice whispered:

“Don't trust Thomas.”

The call ended.

Mara looked at the man.

He was gone.

On the floor lay a final photograph.

It showed Mara's mother, Daniel, Thomas—

and a fourth person.

The face had been scratched away.

But beneath it was a handwritten name:

THE PERSON WHO STARTED EVERYTHING.

Mara turned the photograph over.

There was one final message.

Tomorrow, you will meet them.

END OF EPISODE 4EPISODE 5 — WHEN THE TRUTH WAKES

The next morning, Mara returned to the newsroom.

Thomas was waiting for her.

“You know,” he said quietly.

Mara placed the photograph on his desk.

“My mother called me.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“She was never supposed to contact you.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

Thomas didn't answer.

Mara stepped closer.

“Who was the fourth person in the photograph?”

Thomas looked at her.

Then he finally said:

“Your mother.”

Mara froze.

“What?”

“She wasn't protecting Daniel,” Thomas said. “She was protecting you.”

Mara shook her head.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I was.”

Thomas opened a locked drawer and removed a small recorder.

“This was Daniel's final recording.”

Mara pressed play.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

“If Mara is listening to this, then everything has already gone wrong.”

He paused.

“The truth is simple. There was never a murder.”

Mara stared at Thomas.

Daniel continued.

“Three years ago, I discovered that someone inside Bellgrave had been creating fake identities, fake deaths, and fake evidence to control criminal investigations.”

Mara's eyes widened.

“The person behind it wasn't a police officer.”

A long silence followed.

“It was someone everyone trusted.”

The recording ended.

Mara looked at Thomas.

“Who?”

Thomas didn't answer.

The newsroom television suddenly switched to breaking news.

A reporter appeared on screen.

“Authorities have confirmed that a body was discovered this morning near Bellgrave Lake.”

Mara stared at the screen.

The reporter continued:

“The victim has been identified as investigative journalist Daniel Reed.”

Mara's blood ran cold.

“That isn't possible.”

Thomas looked at her.

“It is if the man you saw last night wasn't Daniel.”

Mara suddenly understood.

The recording.

The photographs.

The fake identity.

Someone had been pretending to be Daniel.

And the real Daniel had been dead all along.

Her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

COME TO THE OLD TRAIN STATION. ALONE.

Mara looked at Thomas.

Then she left.

The old station was abandoned.

Mara walked through the empty platform until she heard a familiar voice.

“You came.”

She turned.

Her mother stood beneath the broken station clock.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

Mara ran toward her.

“Why did you lie to me?”

Her mother hugged her tightly.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

“Who did this?”

Her mother pulled away.

Before she could answer, the station lights suddenly went out.

A gunshot echoed through the darkness.

Mara screamed.

When the lights returned, her mother was gone.

Only a note remained on the ground.

Mara picked it up.

Three words were written across it:

LOOK AT THOMAS.

She returned to the newsroom.

Thomas was gone.

His office was empty.

On his desk sat the photograph from the first night.

Mara turned it over.

The scratched-out face was no longer scratched.

It was Thomas.

Under his photograph was a final sentence:

HE DIDN'T HIDE THE TRUTH.

HE CREATED IT.

Mara slowly looked toward the newsroom cameras.

The red recording light was blinking.

Someone was watching her.

Then every screen in the building turned on at once.

A video appeared.

Thomas was sitting in a dark room.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Mara,” he said, “if you're watching this, congratulations.”

He smiled.

“You finally found the truth.”

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared:

THE END OF THE LIE IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
