Chapter 1: The Question
For thousands of years, humanity searched for evil. It searched in ancient texts, forgotten temples, abandoned churches, and sacred scriptures. It searched in myths, legends, and warnings passed from one generation to another.
Every civilization gave evil a different name. Some called it Satan. Some called it Lucifer. Some called it a demon. Others called it darkness. The names changed. The stories changed. The fear remained the same.
People wanted to believe that evil came from somewhere else. It was a comforting idea. If evil belonged to a Devil, then humanity could remain innocent. If a dark force existed, then every betrayal could be blamed on temptation. Every act of cruelty could be blamed on corruption. Every sin could be blamed on something outside the human mind.
The explanation was simple. Too simple.
History contained an uncomfortable pattern. Wars were started by people. Lies were told by people. Families were destroyed by people. Nations were built by people and ruined by people.
Every crime scene contained the same witness. Humanity itself. Yet people continued searching for monsters in the shadows. Few were willing to search inside themselves.
The human mind possessed a strange ability. It could justify almost anything. A thief could call his theft survival. A liar could call his lie protection. A murderer could call his violence justice.
The action changed. The excuse remained the same. Responsibility was heavy. Blame was light. Most people preferred the lighter burden.
They blamed circumstances. They blamed society. They blamed fate. They blamed the Devil. Anything was easier than accepting ownership.
The strange part was not the lie. The strange part was that many people eventually believed their own excuses. The mind protected itself. It buried uncomfortable truths beneath layers of justification.
But not every truth stayed buried. Some returned. Not during the day. Not in front of other people. Not when life was busy.
They returned in silence. Late at night. When the world became quiet. When there was nobody left to deceive. Not even oneself.
That was when the questions appeared. Small at first. Easy to ignore. Difficult to answer.
A single question had followed humanity through every century. A question older than religions. Older than empires. Older than written history. A question that survived every excuse ever created.
Who is responsible?
Most people spent their entire lives avoiding the answer. A few spent their lives searching for it. And a very small number discovered something far more frightening than any Devil they had ever imagined.
Because sometimes the most terrifying discovery was not finding evil. Sometimes the most terrifying discovery was recognizing it.
The investigation had already begun. None of them knew it yet.
