One More Sunrise

The emergency room never truly slept.

It only changed its rhythm.

At two in the morning, it echoed with hurried footsteps, the shrill cry of monitors, and the sharp voices of doctors calling out instructions.

At four, the waiting room grew quieter—not because the emergencies had stopped, but because everyone had become too exhausted to speak.

By six...

The first hints of dawn slipped through the hospital windows.

For most people, sunrise meant a new beginning.

For those working the night shift...

It meant survival.

Another shift finished.

Another night endured.

Another sunrise earned.

Dr. Adrian Reyes removed his gloves and let out a slow breath.

Twenty-three patients.

Two emergency surgeries.

One child with a severe asthma attack.

A young man injured in a motorcycle accident.

An elderly woman whose hand he held until her family arrived.

His shift was over.

At least on paper.

He glanced at the clock.

7:12 A.M.

He should have gone home.

Instead, he rubbed his tired eyes, grabbed his jacket, and walked toward the hospital café across the street.

The waitress looked up the moment he entered.

“The usual, Doctor?”

He nodded.

“Black coffee.”

She smiled kindly.

“No breakfast again?”

“Maybe tomorrow.”

It was always tomorrow.

Across the pediatric wing, laughter floated down the hallway.

Not loud.

Not forced.

Real.

A little girl proudly held up a drawing covered in crooked rainbows and smiling stick figures.

“There!” she announced.

“Now you look happier.”

Clara Mendoza looked down at the picture.

The little girl’s drawing showed a nurse with impossibly bright hair, oversized shoes, and a smile that stretched from one side of the page to the other.

Clara laughed.

“I think you made my smile a little too big.”

The little girl shook her head.

“No.”

“You smile like that.”

For a moment...

Clara forgot how tired she was.

She carefully pinned the drawing to the nurses’ station wall.

“Thank you.”

The child grinned.

“See you tomorrow, Miss Sunshine.”

Tomorrow.

Another word that had become part of hospital life.

Another promise to keep.

By 7:15 A.M., the morning crowd had begun filling the café.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Paramedics.

Medical students.

Most ordered coffee.

Some ordered breakfast.

Everyone wore the same expression.

Tired.

Adrian sat alone at the corner table near the window, staring absentmindedly at the steam rising from his mug.

He looked up.

Their eyes met for only a second.

He gave a small nod toward the empty chair.

“It’s free.”

She smiled politely.

“Thank you.”

She sat down.

Neither of them said another word.

Outside, the sun slowly climbed above the city skyline.
