Spider-Woman: Late coming home

Cold air cuts through the calm he’s been forcing himself to maintain for the past several hours. His pencil falls to the paper and his chair screeches away from him as he stands. Before he even looks, he knows the window has opened, and she’s finally home. Finally safe.

There’s a quiet grunt, an exhale of breath that seems to prove she’s not quite as okay as she probably hopes she looks. “Hey…” she says, not defending herself quite yet, as it would prove she wasn’t innocent.

“You promised,” he says, folding his arms as he looks over her cut up, dusty suit.

She finally shuts the window, still looking at him as her feet touch the carpet, and she relaxes visibly. “Promised? What, do you want me to stop being Spider-Woman?”

“I didn’t say that. That’s not what I-” He sighs. “I’m just worried about you.”“I know, it was an emergency. There was this tank and I-”

“A tank?! In the middle of the street?”

“River there’s been aliens here two different times.”

“You’re not helping your case, Petra! You promised you’d take a break. You’ve been bleeding through your clothes for two weeks straight!” He raises his arms and drops them with a defeated motion.

Petra hugs her arms at her waist, and her eyes drop to the floor beside him. She huffs a sigh forcefully. “I’m sorry… I’m fine, I promise.”

“No. No Petra. Don’t do that. That doesn’t make me feel any better.”

He pauses, and his face relaxes slightly. He moves to her and wraps his arms around her. As she hugs him back the tightness in his chest starts to retreat, starts to go back to some quiet corner of his mind, waiting for the next time Petra leaves, or the next time he sees her fighting some animal-themed freak on the news.

“I’m sorry…” he says softly. “I’m not mad at you, you know that right?” He kisses the top of her head.

“I know. I just…” She doesn’t look up. “It’s hard. I want you to know I’m okay, but I’m not. I’m really, really not. But I can’t stop. I can’t look the other way just because… Because I love you. Which I do, more than anything.”

“I know you do; and I love you more than that anything. Mine’s above that.”

He chuckles. “...Oh no, I sound like you now.”

She pulls her head back and headbutts his chest. “You wish you could be so funny.”

“Ow~!” he coughs as the simple act rattles his lungs. His hands slide down her back to her hips. “That hurt, hot bug-lady.”

Petra’s eyes widen with worry. She pulls back to look at him. “I’m sorry-! But yeah… I’m sweating like you wouldn’t believe in here. And stop it with the ‘bug!’”

River chuckles with an adoring smile.

“Oh I do believe, but I didn’t mean warm.” His eyes look down over her tight suit. Petra tilts her head a little at him, smiling on one side.

River grins as she tries to load the innuendo into her brain. His smile fades a little as he looks her over. “Seriously… you look so attractive in that,” he says a bit quieter, his face turning the color of her suit.

She glances down at her sweaty, cut-up red and blue suit, and then she gets it. She looks back up skeptically. “Really?” She says doubtfully, an eyebrow raised, but a cocky smirk starts to form.

“Yeeeah.” He nods once with emphasis.

“Hm. Well… maybe I should leave it on.” She says, pulling his hips into hers.

River swallows with nervous excitement. He couldn’t pull back if he tried. Even when she’s holding back, he can feel just how much stronger she is than him. “Well… we should at least clean your cuts,” he says, his eyes moving over her wounds. “You’re gonna get an infection with all that sweat and dirt–What is that?!” He pushes her back by her shoulders. A very large puncture wound is visible through the torn fabric, still bleeding slightly.

“It’s nothing! Seriously River, I’m okay!”

He sighs, the earlier blush lingering even as his expression hardens.

“I’ll be okaaaay.” She drawls, leaning back for dramatic effect while holding onto his hips.

She catches his stern expression and smiles mischievously. She knows exactly what button to push.

He moans quietly into her mouth with surprise. Only after she pulls back does he say, “Don’t distract me from taking care of you…”

She chuckles and walks past him, only his eyes following her as she goes to her room. “Well I was always the responsible one anyway.”

She pauses for a moment as she sees the much too detailed drawing of her on the table, and she smiles softly.

She glances back from her room. River hasn’t followed.

She rolls her eyes and shoots a web right at his chest, a small poof of compressed air exiting from the hidden web shooter under her suit with a thwip.

She reels him in, smiling at the blush on his face. “Usually I’m the blushing one…” She kisses him once he meets her, and then pulls him into the room, pushing the door closed with her foot.

“I still have to clean your cuts~!”
