Chapter 1: I Died...
It seemed like an ordinary day for Liam, but to him, it felt like the beginning of an entirely new chapter in his life. After years of studying, he had finally graduated from high school. He would no longer have to wake up early for the same classes, worry about exams, finish school projects, or give presentations. Now, he finally had the chance to attend college and pursue the dream he had held onto for years: studying Paper Science and Engineering.
Ever since he was a child, Liam had felt a special fascination with paper. While other kids spent their time playing with toys, video games, or sports, he could sit at a table for hours with sheets of paper scattered around him. He loved drawing on them, painting them, cutting them apart, and turning them into small figures. At first, he only made simple shapes, but as the years passed, he began searching for more complex ways to work with the material.
That was how he discovered origami. In the beginning, he could barely fold a sheet properly without tearing it or leaving it completely wrinkled. Instead of giving up, however, he continued practicing. He learned to create flowers, animals, birds, and increasingly detailed figures. The more difficult a design was, the more satisfied he felt when he finally managed to complete it.
To Liam, a sheet of paper was never just a sheet of paper. It could become a figure, a painting, a structure, or even a work of art. Everything depended on the imagination and skill of the person holding it.
His fascination grew even stronger when he watched his first anime,Naruto Shippuden. Among all the characters who appeared throughout the story, one kunoichi immediately caught his attention.
Konan.
She could control paper in a way Liam had never imagined possible. She transformed it into wings, weapons, explosives, and countless techniques that combined beauty with danger. Her fighting style was elegant, yet incredibly powerful at the same time.
Watching Konan manipulate thousands of sheets of paper so effortlessly made Liam admire the material even more. To him, it proved something he had always believed: paper had nearly limitless possibilities. It might appear fragile and ordinary at first glance, but in the right hands, it could become something beautiful, durable, and even dangerous.
Inspired by her, Liam began taking his own creations far more seriously. Simple figures were no longer enough for him. He started working on larger and more elaborate designs, combining origami, painting, and several techniques he had taught himself over the years.
Eventually, people began showing interest in his work. At first, it was only his friends and family. Later, other people started commissioning custom-made figures from him. Liam managed to sell several of his creations and, much to his surprise, earned a decent amount of money from them.
His talent even caught the attention of a few art colleges, which invited him to learn more about their programs because of the potential they saw in him. To many people, it seemed obvious that he should pursue an art degree.
Liam, however, did not completely agree.
Although he loved creating figures and artwork from paper, he did not want to limit himself to art alone. He wanted to understand the material on a much deeper level. He wanted to learn how paper was manufactured, what its fibers were made of, how it could be made stronger, lighter, or more flexible, and what entirely new uses could be developed for it.
That was why, despite the opportunities he had received from art schools, Liam still wanted to study Paper Science and Engineering. To him, the degree represented the perfect combination of his lifelong passion and his desire to understand everything paper could truly become.
Now that he had finally graduated from high school, he felt as though he were about to take the first real step toward turning that dream into reality.
As Liam walked out of his high school for the last time, he was surrounded by several of his friends, laughing and talking just as they had countless times throughout the years. They had all decided to go out for food together and give this stage of their lives a proper ending.
Some talked about the colleges they planned to attend, others discussed the summer jobs they hoped to find, and a few simply joked about everything they had experienced during high school.
Liam listened with a smile. He felt a strange mixture of happiness and nostalgia. He knew their group would probably never meet as often as they once had. Each of them would soon follow a different path, but at least for that day, they could still enjoy each other’s company like they always had.
When they reached an intersection, the pedestrian signal was red. The group stopped near the curb and waited for the light to change.
That was when Liam noticed something on the other side of the street. Near the edge of the road, a small kitten was struggling desperately. One of its paws had become trapped inside a crack in the concrete, and no matter how much it pulled, it could not free itself.
The animal cried out in panic. At the same time, a large truck was speeding down the road, heading directly toward it.
Liam watched the scene for only a fraction of a second.
He did not have time to think.
—Liam, wait! —one of his friends shouted.
—The light is still red!
Ignoring their warnings, Liam ran into the street. He heard the truck’s horn, his friends screaming behind him, and the tires screeching against the pavement, but he did not stop.
He reached the kitten, crouched down, and pulled hard. Its paw finally came free.
Without wasting another second, Liam pushed the small animal out of the way. The kitten rolled safely toward the side of the road just before the truck passed them.
Liam also managed to move at the last possible moment. The vehicle passed only inches away from him, creating a powerful gust of wind that sent his clothes fluttering.
For a few seconds, Liam remained completely still, his heart pounding violently inside his chest. Then he turned toward his friends.
—See? Everything turned out fine —he said with a smile, trying to make what had just happened seem less serious.
However, none of his friends looked relieved.
They were still screaming at him.
Some pointed frantically above and behind him, while others tried to run in his direction.
Liam’s smile slowly disappeared. He could not understand what was wrong.
Then he heard a metallic noise behind him.
He turned around.
One of the truck’s loads had come loose during the driver’s attempt to stop. The enormous structure, weighing approximately fifteen tons, was sliding directly toward him.
Liam barely had enough time to widen his eyes.
He could not run.
He could not scream.
He could not even raise his arms to protect himself.
The load crashed down on top of him with devastating force.
His body was completely crushed.
Death was instantaneous.
For several seconds, nobody moved. An unnatural silence fell over the street, broken only by the sound of the truck finally stopping farther down the road and the cries of the kitten Liam had just saved.
Once everything settled, his friends rushed toward the scene. However, the moment they drew close, they stopped abruptly.
What remained beneath the fallen cargo no longer resembled the person they had been talking to only moments before. They stared in horror, helplessness, and disbelief at what was left of their friend.
Some began to cry. Others covered their mouths to stop themselves from screaming. One of them collapsed to his knees, unable to look away.
Meanwhile, Liam opened his eyes.
The last thing he remembered was seeing the enormous load falling toward him. Yet now, he was standing several feet away from the scene.
Confused, he watched his friends crying around a flattened, blood-covered mass. He could not understand what he was seeing.
—What happened? —he asked.
Nobody answered.
—Why are you crying?
He moved closer, but his friends continued to ignore him. Liam frowned and approached one of them, reaching out to place a hand on his shoulder.
His arm passed straight through his friend’s body.
Liam froze.
He immediately stepped backward and stared at his own hand in disbelief.
—What…?
The memories returned all at once.
The kitten.
The truck.
The cargo coming loose.
The immense weight falling on top of him.
Liam slowly turned his gaze toward the pool of blood and the remains beneath the enormous structure.
At last, he understood.
That was what remained of his body.
—I’m dead…
His voice trembled.
At first, the idea seemed impossible. He had graduated from high school that very morning. He had plans, dreams, and an entire life ahead of him. He was supposed to attend college. He was supposed to study the subject he loved. He was supposed to continue creating things from paper.
But all of it had ended in a matter of seconds.
Tears began running down his face. He was not only crying over college or the dreams he would never fulfill.
He thought about his family.
His mother.
His father.
His siblings.
He imagined how they would receive the news and the pain they would feel when they realized he would never come home again.
Then he looked at his friends, who were still crying helplessly in front of his remains.
—I’m sorry… —he whispered, even though he knew none of them could hear him.
He wanted to approach them. He wanted to tell them that what happened was not their fault. He wanted to say goodbye.
However, before he could continue mourning, he felt a strange energy surrounding his body. He did not know whether it was a force, a current, or something entirely different.
He only knew that it was pulling him somewhere.
Liam tried to resist, but he had no control over what was happening. His figure slowly began moving away from the scene, dragged toward an unknown destination.
—Wait!
He reached out toward his friends, but they only grew farther and farther away.
Then a deep drowsiness began to overcome him. His thoughts grew heavy, and his vision slowly darkened.
Before he could understand where he was being taken, his eyes closed.
His soul—or perhaps simply his consciousness—faded completely.
