The Case Between Us

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Mira has always believed that every mystery has an answer. At twenty-four, she's determined to become a judge, and her first legal internship seems like the perfect beginning. But her first case is anything but simple. A missing set of confidential documents. An employee accused of stealing them. A photograph that doesn't seem to match reality. When Mira turns to Dami, an Architecture student, for help, she doesn't expect him to be someone from her past—someone who doesn't even remember her. As the case becomes more complicated, Mira and Dami find themselves drawn into a mystery that could change everything they thought they knew. Sometimes the biggest mystery isn't the case. It's what happens between two people who were never supposed to meet again.

Chapter 1. THE CASE

At twenty-four, I had already learned that people loved asking questions they had no business asking.

"When are you getting married?"

Are you still in school?"

"Law? That's a very difficult course. Are you sure you can handle it?"

"After all these years, you still work to become a judge?"

I usually smiled.

Sometimes I answered.

Most time, I didn't

There were things I had learned not to explain.

My name is Mira, and I was in my final year of studying Law. Becoming a judge wasn't some childhood dream I had carried around since I was six. It was something I had grown into a decision I had made after years of watching people argue about what was fair and what wasn't.

I wanted to understand the difference.

More importantly, I wanted to be good at it.

That morning, however, justice was the last thing on my mind.

I was sitting in the university library with three textbooks open in front of me, a half-finished cup of coffee beside my laptop, and absolutely no idea what I had been reading for the past twenty minutes.

“Mira.”

I didn't look up.

“Mira.”

Still nothing.

A finger tapped my forehead.

I finally raised my head.

Amara stood in front of me, staring down at me with the expression of someone who had just discovered a crime.

“You've been reading the same page since I came here.”

“I haven't.”

“You have.”

“I was thinking.”

“You were sleeping with your eyes open.”

I closed the book.

“You're disturbing me.”

“Good. You needed disturbance.”

Amara dropped into the chair opposite me and pushed a meat pie across the table.

I looked at it.

“What's this?”

“Food.”

“I can see that.”

“Then why are you asking?”

I pushed it back.

“I don't want it.”

She pushed it toward me again.

“Eat.”

“Amara—”

“Eat, Mira.”

I sighed and took it.

She smiled triumphantly.

This was why we worked.

Amara could talk enough for both of us, and I had long accepted that trying to stop her was a waste of energy.

“Anyway,” she said, lowering her voice, “I have news.”

Miriam: I liked the way the plot was set up and then the relationship progressed. Some may not like the discretion but it all led up to a very happy ending with a bit of suspense leading up to it. Definitely a cliffhanger. Waiting for a follow-up.
