Chapter 1: The wedding
The church bells began to ring at exactly six o'clock.
Elena Rose heard them from inside the bridal room, each deep note vibrating through the stone walls and settling beneath her ribs.
One.
Two.
Three.
She counted every chime because counting was easier than thinking.
Outside, hundreds of guests waited to watch her marry Adrian Blackwood.
Inside, Elena stood perfectly still before an antique mirror, dressed in a gown that had cost more than the first house her parents had ever owned.
The dress was beautiful.
The woman wearing it looked terrified.
"You're shaking."
Elena met her mother's reflection.
"I know."
Her mother stepped closer and adjusted the veil over Elena's dark hair.
"Don't let anyone see that."
Elena almost laughed.
Anyone.
As if the entire city hadn't gathered to watch her marry the most powerful man in the city.
Adrian Blackwood was the kind of man people didn't simply know.
They feared him.
His name was attached to hotels, banks, construction companies, politicians, charities, and half the city's most expensive buildings. Newspapers called him brilliant. Business magazines called him ruthless.
Elena knew a simpler word.
Dangerous.
Her mother placed both hands on her shoulders.
"You love him."
It wasn't a question.
Elena looked at herself in the mirror.
Yesterday, she might have said yes.
This morning, she wasn't sure what she felt anymore.
Fear, certainly.
Regret.
And something colder.
She reached beneath the neckline of her dress and touched the small flash drive hidden against her skin.
The evidence was still there.
She had found it the night before.
A folder on Adrian's private computer.
Her name on the first page.
Her photograph on the second.
And beneath it, a single sentence that had turned her blood to ice.
After the ceremony, make sure Elena does not leave the estate alive.
She had read it three times.
Then she had discovered the photographs.
A glass of wine beside her bed.
A car accident report.
A bottle of medication.
Different methods.
The same conclusion.
Adrian had been planning her death.
And he had planned everything so carefully that even if she disappeared after the wedding, everyone would believe it was an accident.
"Elena?"
She realized her mother was still speaking.
"Sorry."
"I said Adrian is waiting."
Elena swallowed.
"I know."
Her mother smiled, but worry flickered in her eyes.
"Then let's go."
The doors opened.
Music filled the church.
Every conversation stopped.
Elena stepped forward.
The aisle stretched endlessly before her.
White roses lined the pews. Candles flickered along the walls. Sunlight poured through stained-glass windows, scattering red and gold across the marble floor.
At the end of the aisle stood Adrian.
Her future husband.
He looked flawless in a black tuxedo, one hand resting calmly at his side and the other holding a wedding ring.
When their eyes met, Adrian smiled.
A smile that made the congregation sigh.
Elena felt cold.
She began walking.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Her father's eyes followed her from the front row.
He looked proud.
Too proud.
Elena wondered if he knew.
Had Adrian told him?
Had her father helped him?
The thought made her stomach twist.
She kept walking.
When Elena reached Adrian, he took her hand.
His fingers closed around hers.
Too tightly.
"You're beautiful," he whispered.
Elena forced herself to smile.
"So are you."
His thumb brushed across her knuckles.
Then he leaned closer.
"Don't be nervous."
"I'm not."
"Good."
His eyes darkened.
"Because there is nowhere to run now."
Elena's breath caught.
He smiled again for the guests.
The priest began speaking.
She heard almost none of it.
Her heartbeat was louder.
The priest talked about devotion, trust, and forever.
Elena stared at the man beside her.
Forever.
That was the problem.
She didn't think she had another day.
The priest turned toward Adrian.
"Do you, Adrian Blackwood, take Elena Rose to be your lawful wife?"
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"I do."
The words echoed through the church.
Then the priest turned to Elena.
"And do you, Elena Rose, take Adrian Blackwood to be your lawful husband?"
Silence.
Hundreds of people waited.
Elena looked at Adrian.
He was still smiling.
But his eyes were different now.
There was a warning in them.
A promise.
Say no, and everyone you love will pay.
Her father's expression hardened.
Her mother looked frightened.
Elena realized something then.
She had been trapped long before she entered the church.
She opened her mouth.
"I—"
The church doors exploded open.
Several guests screamed.
Everyone turned.
The priest froze.
Adrian's hand dropped from Elena's.
A man stood in the doorway.
He was covered in blood.
His black suit was torn. His white shirt was soaked crimson around the chest and shoulder. Dark hair fell across his forehead, and one side of his face was bruised.
But it was his eyes that stopped Elena's heart.
They were fixed on her.
Only her.
The man took one step into the church.
Then another.
Guards immediately rushed toward him.
Adrian didn't move.
For the first time since Elena had known him, the color drained from his face.
"No," Adrian whispered.
The stranger stopped.
A strange silence spread through the church.
He looked at Adrian.
Then back at Elena.
"Elena."
Her name sounded different coming from him.
Familiar.
Impossible.
Elena stared.
"I don't know you."
Something broke across the stranger's expression.
Pain.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Pain.
"You don't remember me."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Get him out."
The guards moved.
The stranger's voice suddenly became louder.
"Don't marry him!"
The church erupted into whispers.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Take him away."
Two guards grabbed the stranger.
He fought them desperately, his eyes never leaving Elena.
"You have to listen to me!"
Elena couldn't move.
Something inside her was screaming.
Run.
But she didn't know why.
The stranger reached into his jacket.
One guard struck his arm.
A photograph slipped from his fingers and floated to the marble floor.
It landed face-up.
Elena saw it.
And stopped breathing.
The photograph showed a younger version of herself, perhaps twenty years old.
She was smiling.
Standing beside the blood-covered stranger.
Her head rested against his shoulder.
Around his neck was a silver chain Elena recognized because she had one exactly like it.
But that wasn't the worst part.
On Elena's finger in the photograph was a ring.
A ring identical to the one Adrian was holding.
The stranger looked at her.
His voice became barely a whisper.
"You promised me you would remember."
Elena stared at the photograph.
She didn't remember him.
She didn't remember the place.
She didn't remember the day.
But her body remembered something.
Her chest tightened.
Her fingers trembled.
Somewhere deep inside her mind, a locked door seemed to move.
Just slightly.
A flash appeared.
A summer night.
Laughter.
A man's hand holding hers.
A voice whispering, "If they ever make you forget me, I'll find you."
Elena gasped.
The vision disappeared.
"Elena?"
Adrian grabbed her arm.
She looked at him.
For the first time, she saw something she had never seen in his eyes before.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not for her.
For the man standing across the church.
The stranger was dragged toward the doors.
Before he disappeared, he looked at Elena one last time.
His lips formed four words.
"I came back for you."
The doors slammed shut.
Silence returned.
No one moved.
The priest slowly looked at Elena.
"Mrs. Blackwood..."
Elena stared at the photograph lying on the floor.
Adrian picked it up.
His expression was unreadable.
Then he folded it once.
Twice.
And slipped it into his pocket.
Elena looked at him.
"Who was that?"
Adrian's face became cold.
"No one."
She stared at him.
"No one?"
He leaned closer.
His voice was soft enough that only she could hear.
"Forget him."
Elena looked toward the doors.
For some reason, tears had begun filling her eyes.
She didn't know the stranger.
She had never met him.
At least, that was what she had believed.
But as the priest waited for her answer, Elena felt something terrifying settle inside her.
The stranger wasn't the thing she should have been afraid of.
The thing she should have been afraid of was the possibility that he was telling the truth.
That Adrian had lied.
That her family had lied.
And that the life she remembered wasn't her life at all.
The priest cleared his throat.
"Elena?"
She slowly turned toward Adrian.
He was still holding the wedding ring.
She looked at it.
Then at him.
Then toward the closed church doors.
Finally, she whispered the words that would change everything.
"I do."
The church erupted in applause.
But Elena heard only the echo of a stranger's voice in her head.
"I came back for you."
And somewhere beneath the applause, a forgotten memory stirred again, carrying the warmth of a man's hand, the sound of his laughter, and a promise Elena had buried deep inside her for years, alone.
