Chapter Two: The Door Beneath the Earth
Eliana stood in the darkness, staring at the narrow stone staircase beneath her grandmother's house.
The silver necklace around her neck was still glowing.
Behind them, something crashed upstairs.
Eliana flinched.
“Grandma, who are those people?”
Rose didn't answer immediately.
She placed both hands on Eliana's shoulders and looked directly into her eyes.
“Whatever you hear, don't go back upstairs.”
“But who are they?”
“People who have been waiting a very long time to find you.”
Eliana's heart pounded.
“Why would anyone be looking for me?”
Rose looked at the necklace.
“Because of what you carry.”
“The necklace?”
“No.”
Rose lowered her voice.
“Because of what the necklace carries inside it.”
Before Eliana could ask another question, footsteps echoed from the hidden room behind them.
They were coming closer.
Rose turned toward the staircase.
“Go.”
Eliana hesitated.
“Grandma, I'm not leaving you.”
“You aren't leaving me. I'm coming with you.”
Rose took a small lantern from the wall and hurried down the stairs.
Eliana followed.
The staircase seemed much longer than it should have been.
They walked downward for several minutes.
The air became colder.
The walls changed from wood to stone.
Strange symbols were carved into the walls—circles, stars, suns, and crescent moons.
Eliana ran her fingers over one of the symbols.
“What are these?”
“Warnings,” Rose said.
“Warnings about what?”
“About the people who once controlled the second sun.”
Eliana stopped.
“You said the second sun returned. What does that mean?”
Rose continued walking.
“Long ago, there were two suns.”
Eliana stared at her.
“Two suns?”
“Yes. One belonged to our world. The other belonged to a hidden kingdom beyond the mountains.”
“What happened to it?”
“It disappeared.”
“Why?”
Rose's face became serious.
“Because someone tried to use its power to control the world.”
Eliana looked down at the necklace.
“And my mother knew about this?”
“She knew more than anyone.”
“What was she?”
Rose stopped walking.
“She was the last Guardian.”
“The last Guardian of what?”
“The second sun.”
Suddenly, a loud sound echoed above them.
BOOM!
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Eliana jumped.
“They found the passage!”
Rose grabbed her hand.
“Keep moving.”
They hurried down the stairs.
At the bottom was a huge stone door.
There was no handle.
Only a circular symbol in the middle.
Rose pointed at it.
“Put your necklace against the symbol.”
Eliana hesitated.
“What will happen?”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“I've never opened it.”
Eliana slowly lifted the necklace.
The moment the pendant touched the stone, the entire door began to glow.
Golden lines spread across it like cracks of light.
Then a voice echoed through the underground chamber.
WELCOME, CHILD OF THE SECOND SUN.
Eliana stepped backward.
“Who said that?”
Rose stared at the door.
“I don't know.”
The stone door slowly opened.
Beyond it was a vast underground chamber.
Eliana's mouth fell open.
There were hundreds of glowing crystals embedded in the walls.
A river of silver water flowed through the center of the room.
And in the middle stood a giant circular platform covered in ancient symbols.
At the far end was a massive painting.
Eliana walked toward it.
The painting showed a woman standing beneath two suns.
The woman had long dark hair.
She was holding a baby.
Eliana's heart stopped.
“Grandma…”
Rose looked away.
“That woman…”
Eliana stepped closer.
“That's my mother.”
Rose nodded.
“Yes.”
Eliana stared at the painting.
“But why is she holding a baby?”
Rose's voice became quiet.
“Because that baby was you.”
Eliana felt tears fill her eyes.
“You knew this whole time?”
“I did.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your mother made me promise.”
“A promise to hide my own life from me?”
“She wanted you to have a normal childhood.”
Eliana turned away.
“I never had a normal childhood.”
Rose looked at her sadly.
“I know.”
Eliana wiped her eyes.
“Where is she?”
Rose didn't answer.
“Grandma. Where is my mother?”
“She disappeared when you were a baby.”
“Is she dead?”
Rose looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Eliana's heart skipped.
“You don't know?”
“No.”
For years, Eliana had believed she had no parents.
Now she was discovering something completely different.
Her mother might still be alive.
A sudden flash of light came from the center of the chamber.
The silver river began to glow.
Then the symbols on the platform lit up.
Eliana's necklace became warm.
A voice whispered inside her mind.
Come closer.
She stepped toward the platform.
“Don't!” Rose shouted.
Eliana stopped.
“Why?”
“I don't know what it will do.”
“But it called me.”
Rose looked frightened.
“That is exactly why you shouldn't trust it.”
A sound suddenly came from behind them.
Someone was inside the chamber.
Eliana turned.
A boy stood at the entrance.
He looked about her age and wore a dark traveling coat. His hair was messy from the journey, and he carried an old leather bag.
He raised both hands.
“Don't worry. I'm not here to hurt you.”
Rose stepped in front of Eliana.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Noah.”
Eliana stared at him.
“Noah?”
The boy looked at her.
“You're Eliana, right?”
“How do you know my name?”
Noah glanced at the glowing necklace.
“Because I've been looking for you.”
Rose's expression hardened.
“Who sent you?”
“No one.”
“Then why are you here?”
Noah took a folded piece of paper from his bag.
He handed it to Eliana.
She opened it.
It was an old drawing of the silver sun.
Underneath it were three words:
FIND THE GIRL.
Eliana looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
“My father.”
“Who is your father?”
Noah hesitated.
“The man who disappeared with your mother.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Eliana stared at him.
“You knew my mother?”
“No. But my father did.”
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared twelve years ago.”
Eliana's mind raced.
“My mother disappeared twelve years ago too.”
Noah nodded.
“That's why I came here.”
Suddenly, the necklace flashed.
The silver river rose into the air.
Both Eliana and Noah stepped backward.
A glowing image appeared above the water.
It was a woman.
Eliana recognized her immediately.
Her mother.
The woman looked directly at Eliana.
“My little star…”
Eliana couldn't move.
“Mom?”
The image flickered.
“If you are seeing this, then the second sun has returned.”
Rose covered her mouth.
The message continued.
“They will come for you. Do not trust the people who wear the black sun.”
The image began to fade.
Eliana reached toward it.
“Wait!”
Her mother's voice echoed one last time.
“Find the kingdom beyond the mountains.”
Then the image disappeared.
The chamber became silent.
Noah looked at Eliana.
“The kingdom beyond the mountains…”
Rose suddenly looked terrified.
“No.”
Eliana turned toward her.
“What?”
“We cannot go there.”
“Why?”
Rose looked toward the ancient painting.
“Because that is where your mother disappeared.”
A deep rumble shook the chamber.
The stone door behind them began closing.
Noah grabbed his bag.
“We need to leave.”
Eliana looked at Rose.
“Grandma…”
Rose nodded.
“For the first time, we have no choice.”
They ran toward the closing door.
Just before it shut, Eliana looked back at the glowing chamber.
For a moment, she thought she saw someone standing beside the silver river.
A woman.
Her mother.
Then the darkness swallowed everything.
And somewhere high above the mountains, the second sun appeared again.
This time, everyone in Bellwood could see it.
And far away, inside a dark castle, a mysterious man looked toward the sky.
He smiled.
“The Guardian has awakened.”
Then he turned toward a group of people dressed in black.
“Bring me the girl.”
