The Last Look

Maya Voss had built her entire life around her face.

Millions of followers watched her transform herself every morning.

Perfect brows. Perfect skin. Perfect lips. Her beauty videos were famous for making impossible things look effortless.“Good morning, gorgeous people!” Maya said, smiling brightly into her ring light. The chat exploded.MAYA!!!WE MISSED YOU!WHAT ARE WE TRYING TODAY?Maya laughed.“Okay, everyone. Today is special.”She held up a small black makeup case.“I received this yesterday, and there is absolutely no information on the packaging. No brand. No ingredients. Nothing.”The chat slowed. Then exploded again.DO A REVIEWTHAT LOOKS CREEPYWHERE DID YOU GET IT?Maya shrugged.“It was left outside my apartment.”She opened the case.Inside were six tiny glass jars filled with cosmetics. The colors were beautiful. One was a shimmering silver. One was deep violet. One was blacker than charcoal. And one was a strange flesh-colored foundation that seemed to move whenever the light hit it.Maya frowned.“That's weird.”She picked up the foundation. It was cold. Not cool.Cold.Like something that had been sitting underground. She laughed nervously.“Well, let's see what mystery foundation does.”She applied a small amount to her cheek.Instantly, the redness beneath it disappeared.Maya stared into the camera.“Whoa.”She applied more. Her skin became impossibly smooth.Porcelain.Almost luminous. The chat went wild.DROP THE BRANDWHAT FOUNDATION IS THAT???YOUR SKIN LOOKS INSANEMaya smiled.“I told you this was going to be good.”She continued applying the makeup.Foundation.Blush.Eyeshadow.Lip color. With every layer, her reflection looked more perfect. But something strange began happening.Maya couldn't feel the makeup. She touched her cheek.Nothing.She pinched the skin.Nothing.“Guys?”She laughed.“I think this stuff is numbing my face.”The chat filled with laughing emojis.Maya continued. Then someone typed:WHY IS YOUR FACE MOVING?Maya froze.“What?”Another comment appeared.LOOK AT YOUR LEFT CHEEKShe leaned closer to the camera. At first, she saw nothing. Then she noticed it.A tiny crease.Running from the corner of her mouth toward her ear.Maya touched it.The skin moved. Not like skin.Like a piece of fabric. Her smile disappeared.“Okay…”She tugged gently.A thin strip of skin lifted away from her cheek.Maya screamed. She dropped the makeup brush. The livestream camera continued recording.Thousands of viewers watched as Maya grabbed her face with both hands.“What's happening?!”She pulled harder. The foundation came away. Then the skin beneath it.Her entire cheek peeled loose. There was no blood. No wound.Just darkness underneath.A black, empty space where her face should have been. The chat became unreadable.OH MY GODCALL 911STOP STREAMINGMAYA GET HELPMaya stumbled backward.“No. No. No.”She reached for her phone. Her reflection appeared in the dark screen. Her face was coming apart. The skin around her nose had loosened. Her lips hung strangely. One eyebrow slid down her forehead.Then—POP.Her entire face detached. It fell into her hands.Maya stared down at it.It looked almost exactly like a silicone beauty mask.Perfect.Smooth.Beautiful.Smiling.But Maya wasn't smiling. She was screaming behind it.Her voice came from somewhere deep inside the darkness beneath the mask. Then the makeup jars began to rattle. One by one, their lids twisted open.A voice whispered through Maya's apartment.“Finally.”Maya stopped screaming. The livestream microphone picked up another whisper.“Someone beautiful.”The black eyeshadow spread across the table by itself. The foundation crawled toward the camera. And then the livestream ended.---The video remained online for exactly eleven minutes. Then it disappeared.Maya's account disappeared too.Her apartment was empty when police arrived. There was no sign of her.No blood. No body.Only a ring light still glowing in the bedroom. On the desk sat the six jars.Five were empty. The sixth contained something that looked like a face.Maya's face.Perfectly preserved.Still smiling. The police never released the photographs. But one officer later claimed that when he walked past the desk, the face inside the jar opened its eyes.Three days later, a new beauty account appeared. No profile picture. No biography.Just one post.A photograph of a woman with flawless porcelain skin. The caption read:NEW LOOK TONIGHT. LIVE AT MIDNIGHT.Thousands of people followed. At midnight, the livestream began. The woman smiled into the camera. She looked exactly like Maya.“Good evening, gorgeous people.”She picked up a black makeup case. And somewhere beneath the layers of perfect skin, something whispered:“Let's make you beautiful.”Then she opened the first jar.

Knox Hollow: Little Bunny

Neenee73: The author managed to weave instant tension and mystery from the get go. It was a balancing act that kept me guessing and made everyone look like they could be a villain which is on par with the great writers of mystery like Agatha and Doyle. I was jumping at every creak. If you like tension in ever...
