The Boring, Everyday Life
Two teenagers shared an intimate moment under the shade of a large oak tree.
“Careful, do not let anyone see us,” he whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
“Relax, there is no one out tonight. I have liked you for a long time,” he replied, his tone deep and confident.
The larger boy pinned the thinner kid against the dark bark. The fragile youth closed his eyes, his cheeks flushing red as he waited for his first kiss. But the touch never came. Instead, a thick spray of hot blood hit his face. He opened his eyes in disgust. His repulsion turned to pure terror when he saw what stood before him. His supposed lover’s head had split straight down the middle, starting from the jaw. A gaping mouth packed with razor-sharp fangs ripped out of the raw flesh and lunged at his throat. A piercing scream echoed across the hill before cutting out completely.
“No way, I lost again. This game is total garbage,” Kira groaned, tossing the controller onto the couch cushions.
The glow from the television lit up her bedroom, reflecting massive red letters on the screen that spelled out “GAME OVER”.
“Kira, you are not still playing video games, are you?” her mom called from the hallway, cracking the door open. “School starts tomorrow, sweetie. Time to sleep.”
“No, Mom, I already turned it off!” she lied, shutting down the console and shoving the controller under her blanket.
She flopped back onto her mattress, grabbing a gaming magazine from her nightstand to flip through the glossy pages and vent her frustration.
“I cannot wait for next month. That new title is going to be epic,” she sighed.
“To bed, sweetie,” her mom urged from the doorway, keeping a watchful eye on her.
“But I am not tired yet,” Kira protested, rolling over on her side.
“You are fifteen, almost sixteen. My house, my rules.”
Before Kira could talk back, a distant cry echoed from down the hall.
“I have to go check on your brother, he is awake again,” her mom sighed, turning around. “I am coming, hold on!” she shouted, rushing off toward the nursery.
Kira rolled her eyes. She hated school with a passion, but she had no choice except to follow the house rules. She closed the magazine and set it down. Before reaching for the lamp, her eyes landed on a framed photograph sitting on her dresser.
“I liked it better when you were still here,” she whispered softly, plunging the room into total darkness.
The next morning, Kira arrived at the front gates of the high school.
“Wow, you actually showed up! I thought you might have overslept. Did you see the news about the new console?”
It was Deina, her best friend, sporting short hair, thick glasses, and boundless energy. Standing right beside her was Robert, a skinny guy with messy dark hair and acne. They were the school’s dedicated gaming crew.
Before Kira could reply, a burly kid shoved roughly past them, slapping a stack of notebooks right out of Robert’s hands.
“Move, nerds!” the bully mocked, laughing loudly as he strutted away.
“That jerk always picks on us,” Robert muttered, dropping to his knees to gather his papers with white-knuckled rage.
He was about to vent further, but the atmosphere around the courtyard shifted instantly. Students began crowding both sides of the walkway, forming a makeshift red carpet as if waiting for a celebrity arrival.
A shiny red convertible pulled up to the main entrance. A tall, athletic blonde guy hopped out of the driver’s seat. He slid his sunglasses off with a fluid movement, revealing piercing blue eyes as the breeze caught his styled hair. To top it off, he tossed his letterman jacket over his shoulder, showing off a broad build that left half the girls in the courtyard breathless. They began chanting his name in unison.
“Oh my god... It is Dylan. He is the most handsome guy on the planet,” Deina and Kira sighed together, their eyes wide.
“Ugh, just another rich idiot,” Robert complained, kicking a stray pebble because no one was paying attention to his grievances. “Just because he is the varsity football captain, he thinks he owns the place.”
“He owns everything,” Deina corrected, her eyes locked on the blonde athlete. “We are not even in the same league. It is like a god descended to walk among us. We are not worthy.”
“Yeah, true,” Kira agreed, checking her reflection in her phone screen to touch up her style. She had long black hair with purple tips, paired with dark clothing. “He is a prince, and we are just frogs. He would never notice someone like me, especially not a gamer.”
“The worst part is that he is dating Lydia, the most annoying popular girl in the entire building,” Deina added, wrinkling her nose in disgust.
A tall redhead strolled up to Dylan and planted a kiss directly on his cheek, asserting her claim.
“Total snake,” both girls muttered in unison, united by their shared hatred for their crush’s girlfriend.
“Well, dreaming is free,” Deina grinned, nudging Kira playfully as they headed toward the front doors.
Inside the classroom, Kira, Deina, and Robert rushed straight for the back row, their usual comfort zone. A few minutes later, their teacher, Mr. Greg, walked in and clapped his hands for silence to introduce a new face.
The student stepping through the door immediately drew everyone’s attention. He had striking silver hair, but the most unusual detail was his eyes, a shade of pale blue that looked like polished crystals.
“Everyone, this is Sean. He will be joining our class starting today. Please give him a warm welcome,” Mr. Greg announced, gesturing toward the teenager.
A few half-hearted claps echoed through the room, while Carlo, the class bully, let out a loud sneer from across the aisle. Sean offered a brief introduction and walked over to the only open desk, which happened to sit right next to Kira.
“Hey,” Sean greeted casually, slumping into his chair.
Kira did not even glance at him; her eyes remained glued to the back of Dylan’s head three rows ahead.
“I am Robert,” her friend chimed in from the next desk, extending his hand timidly.
Before Sean could shake it, a crumpled paper ball smacked Robert right on the side of his neck. Carlo chuckled loudly from two rows back.
“Dammit, grow up, Carlo! We are not five years old anymore!” Robert snapped, rubbing his neck in frustration.
Before the teacher could step in and restore order, the entire building rattled violently. A deep, low rumble shook the floorboards, making the window panes vibrate against their frames. Thinking it was a sudden earthquake, panic erupted through the hallways, and students scrambled out into the open courtyard.
However, what awaited them under the open sky was no natural disaster. It was infinitely worse.
The clouds above began to warp and twist into strange patterns. Massive flashes of light blanketed the horizon, turning the firmament into a living screen of energy. Right in the center of the sky, an image materialized. It looked like a fluffy, adorable white rabbit, prompting a few students to utter confused gasps.
Then, the entity spoke.
“You have all been chosen for our amusement,” the creature thundered, its voice booming across the atmosphere like a rolling storm.
The voice, gentle at first, distorted into a terrifying, hollow screech. At the exact same time, the rabbit’s snow-white fur turned a deep, blood-red color, and its features twisted into a macabre, demonic grin. The entire sky drowned in that same crimson shade.
“What in the world...” Kira whispered, taking a trembling step back as a cold chill ran straight down her spine.
