Chapter 1: The awakening
Times of peace were always short-lived. Death and terror lurked in the shadows, waiting for the balance to break.
Three kingdoms thrived beneath that fragile peace, each terrifyingly powerful and fearsome in its own right. Yet beneath the surface, schemes ran like the roots of the sacred Muric Tree, spreading deeper than anyone could see.
Each kingdom had its own agenda, and while civil war brewed within their borders, threats from beyond them continued to grow.
The balance broke.
The threats that had once lurked in the shadows finally came to light, bringing about what history would remember as the Red War.
Blood spilled like never before. The beasts that were created during the war turned against the kingdoms, and before long, they were no longer weapons controlled by anyone.
They ruled.
At a point, the beasts took over the world. Creatures of old ran across the continents, stomping through kingdoms as though the people who lived there had never existed. They conquered kingdoms, ravaged the land, and left nothing behind but ashes and blood. The screams of the innocent echoed across the ruined earth while dark clouds swallowed the sky, lightning briefly illuminating the destruction below.
One beast stood above them all.
Wherever he went, death followed.
In the vision of blue and red, skulls covered the ground, leaving barely enough room to place one's feet. The air was dry and still, neither hot nor cold, yet something unnatural lingered in the silence. Something that made the space between each distant scream feel almost alive.
A tall beast of old stood in the middle of the devastation.
Blood covered its massive body. Its horns were stained red with blood and flesh, while its long tail moved slowly through the dry air. It gazed upon the destruction surrounding it with something resembling pleasure.
Then it threw back its head and laughed.
The demon began an ancient dance, swaying its beastly body through the destruction.
"I'm back!"
Its thunderous voice rolled across the mass grave it had created.
Beneath the beast lay three women, the former brides of three legendary kings. Their bodies were still, their blood dark against the ash.
"Mine," the beast snarled. "The world is all mine, mine to destroy."
It looked down at them, its red eyes burning.
"Where are your protectors?" it mocked. "I have returned, and I have won once more. Not even the powers of the universe can stop my glorious reign."
The beast lifted its head proudly.
"I am Mnuka Ikran Zar," it declared. "And I will rule as Lord once more."
For centuries, his name had been enough to strike fear into the hearts of every race.
Mnuka had been created during the Red War through forbidden Druid magic, forged to destroy the enemies of those who created him. But the creature they had made eventually turned against them, raising an army from the blood of Druids and spreading terror across the ancient kingdoms.
The Druids called him a mistake.
A stain they could never scrub from their history.
The other races had their own name for his kind.
Hakura, meaning Abomination.
After centuries of silence, Mnuka was awakening.
His seal was weakening, and the Octave was partly to blame, a secret grove of Druids who worshipped the Demon King and had spent years working to bring him back.
Centuries ago, three legendary kings had risen against him.
Raiden Vael, the greatest Druid the ancient race had ever known, had been born from his father and the sacred Muric Tree. He had no mother. Magic had conceived him, and the ancient tree had carried him. From his power came the vampires, the children of the night.
Drakon Nightclaw, King of the Wolves, Alpha of all Alphas and Omegas. He had killed his own father in a challenge for the throne and ruled through strength, loyalty, and fear.
Varick Spellborne, born of the three witches of Azure, whose name had become almost as legendary as the spells he created. He had written the most feared spells of the old world, and even after centuries, people still whispered that his magic was boundless.
Together, the three kings had been powerful enough to challenge Mnuka.
But even they could not defeat him.
The ancient Druids and seers had already spoke of what would be needed to stand against him. Three brides would come, women destined to awaken storms within the kings' hearts and unlock powers beyond anything they had possessed before.
The prophecy came true.
The kings found their brides, and with them came power unlike anything the world had seen. Their abilities magnified until the three kings became immortals.
But when Mnuka attacked, the kings nearly destroyed the world themselves trying to protect the women they loved.
And still, it was not enough. The brides died.
The kings sealed themselves away alongside the Demon Lord, and the other half of the prophecy disappeared, lost to time.
Centuries passed.
A young Druid seer named Dorian saw something no one else had seen. A vision of the Demon King.
The beast turned toward him.
Its red eyes met his.
Dorian jolted awake.
Sweat covered his body, and his eyes had turned completely green. His body convulsed violently against the bed.
"Dorian! Dorian, stay with me!"
A bald man dressed in green robes rushed to the boy's side, struggling to hold him still.
"He has awakened!" Dorian cried. "He has awakened!"
"He won't survive this," another voice said. " Summon him back, Darius!"
"I'm trying, but the force holding him is too strong."
"I told you," the woman whispered through her tears. "He wasn't ready."
Darius closed his eyes and began muttering an ancient spell.
"Zuma... Suma..."
The room trembled.
Darius's white eyes flashed green.
Then he suddenly went still.
His eyes slowly returned to black.
For a moment, the room fell silent.
Dorian clung to the woman beside the bed, shaking violently.
"He-he is..."
His breath caught.
"He is back."
Tears streamed down his face.
"The Demon Lord..."
His voice broke.
"...has awakened."
